Unfolding-Based Process Discovery
This paper presents a novel technique for process discovery. In contrast to
the current trend, which only considers an event log for discovering a process
model, we assume two additional inputs: an independence relation on the set of
logged activities, and a collection of negative traces. After deriving an
intermediate net unfolding from them, we perform a controlled folding giving
rise to a Petri net which contains both the input log and all
independence-equivalent traces arising from it. Remarkably, the derived Petri
net cannot execute any trace from the negative collection. The entire chain of
transformations is fully automated. A tool has been developed and experimental
results are provided that witness the significance of the contribution of this

Membrane Systems and Petri Net Synthesis
Automated synthesis from behavioural specifications is an attractive and
powerful way of constructing concurrent systems. Here we focus on the problem
of synthesising a membrane system from a behavioural specification given in the
form of a transition system which specifies the desired state space of the
system to be constructed. We demonstrate how a Petri net solution to this
problem, based on the notion of region of a transition system, yields a method

Mining structured Petri nets for the visualization of process behavior
Visualization is essential for understanding the models obtained by process mining. Clear and efficient visual representations make the embedded information more accessible and analyzable. This work presents a novel approach for generating process models with structural properties that induce visually friendly layouts. Rather than generating a single model that captures all behaviors, a set of Petri net models is delivered, each one covering a subset of traces of the log. The models are mined by extracting slices of labelled transition systems with specific properties from the complete state space produced by the process logs. Model-based dependability analysis : state-of-the-art, challenges and future outlook
Abstract: Over the past two decades, the study of model-based dependability analysis has gathered significant research interest. Different approaches have been developed to automate and address various limitations of classical dependability techniques to contend with the increasing complexity and challenges of modern safety-critical system. Two leading paradigms have emerged, one which constructs predictive system failure models from component failure models compositionally using the topology of the system. The other utilizes design models - typically state automata - to explore system behaviour through fault injection. This paper reviews a number of prominent techniques under these two paradigms, and provides an insight into their working mechanism, applicability, strengths and challenges, as well as recent developments within these fields. We also discuss the emerging trends on integrated approaches and advanced analysis capabilities. Lastly, we outline the future outlook for model-based dependability analysis
Extension of PRISM by Synthesis of Optimal Timeouts in Fixed-Delay CTMC
We present a practically appealing extension of the probabilistic model
checker PRISM rendering it to handle fixed-delay continuous-time Markov chains
(fdCTMCs) with rewards, the equivalent formalism to the deterministic and
stochastic Petri nets (DSPNs). fdCTMCs allow transitions with fixed-delays (or
timeouts) on top of the traditional transitions with exponential rates. Our
extension supports an evaluation of expected reward until reaching a given set
of target states. The main contribution is that, considering the fixed-delays
as parameters, we implemented a synthesis algorithm that computes the
epsilon-optimal values of the fixed-delays minimizing the expected reward. We
provide a performance evaluation of the synthesis on practical examples

Generic Pipelined Processor Modeling and High Performance Cycle-Accurate Simulator Generation
Detailed modeling of processors and high performance cycle-accurate
simulators are essential for today's hardware and software design. These
problems are challenging enough by themselves and have seen many previous
research efforts. Addressing both simultaneously is even more challenging, with
many existing approaches focusing on one over another. In this paper, we
propose the Reduced Colored Petri Net (RCPN) model that has two advantages:
first, it offers a very simple and intuitive way of modeling pipelined
processors; second, it can generate high performance cycle-accurate simulators.
RCPN benefits from all the useful features of Colored Petri Nets without
suffering from their exponential growth in complexity. RCPN processor models
are very intuitive since they are a mirror image of the processor pipeline
block diagram. Furthermore, in our experiments on the generated cycle-accurate
simulators for XScale and StrongArm processor models, we achieved an order of

Analyzing safety and fault tolerance using time Petri nets
The application of time Petri net modelling and analysis techniques to safety-critical real-time systems is explored and procedures described which allow analysis of safety, recoverability, and fault tolerance. These procedures can be used to help determine software requirements, to guide the use of fault detection and recovery procedures, to determine conditions which require immediate miti gating action to prevent accidents, etc. Thus it is possible to establish important properties duing the synthesis of the system and software design instead of using guesswork and costly a posteriori analysis
Practical Distributed Control Synthesis
Classic distributed control problems have an interesting dichotomy: they are
either trivial or undecidable. If we allow the controllers to fully
synchronize, then synthesis is trivial. In this case, controllers can
effectively act as a single controller with complete information, resulting in
a trivial control problem. But when we eliminate communication and restrict the
supervisors to locally available information, the problem becomes undecidable.
In this paper we argue in favor of a middle way. Communication is, in most
applications, expensive, and should hence be minimized. We therefore study a
solution that tries to communicate only scarcely and, while allowing
communication in order to make joint decision, favors local decisions over
