    5G Positioning and Mapping with Diffuse Multipath

    5G mmWave communication is useful for positioning due to the geometric connection between the propagation channel and the propagation environment. Channel estimation methods can exploit the resulting sparsity to estimate parameters(delay and angles) of each propagation path, which in turn can be exploited for positioning and mapping. When paths exhibit significant spread in either angle or delay, these methods breakdown or lead to significant biases. We present a novel tensor-based method for channel estimation that allows estimation of mmWave channel parameters in a non-parametric form. The method is able to accurately estimate the channel, even in the absence of a specular component. This in turn enables positioning and mapping using only diffuse multipath. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach

    Improved NLOS Error Mitigation Based on LTS Algorithm

    A new improved Least Trimmed Squares (LTS) based algorithm for Non-line-of sight (NLOS) error mitigation is proposed for indoor localisation systems. The conventional LTS algorithm has hard threshold to decide the final set of base stations (BSs) to be used in position calculations. When the number of Line of Sight (LOS) base stations is more than the number of NLOS BSs the conventional LTS algorithm does not include some of them in position estimation due to principle of LTS algorithm or under heavy NLOS environments it cannot separate least biased BSs to use. To improve the performance of the conventional LTS algorithm in dynamic environments we have proposed a method that selects BSs for position calculation based on ordered residuals without discarding half of the BSs. By choosing a set of BSs which have least residual errors among all combinations as a final set for position calculation, we were able to decrease the localisation error of the system in dynamic environments. We demonstrate the robustness of the new improved method based on computer simulations under realistic channel environments

    Wireless Positioning and Tracking for Internet of Things in GPS-denied Environments

    Wireless positioning and tracking have long been a critical technology for various applications such as indoor/outdoor navigation, surveillance, tracking of assets and employees, and guided tours, among others. Proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the evolution of smart cities, and vulnerabilities of traditional localization technologies to cyber-attacks such as jamming and spoofing of GPS necessitate development of novel radio frequency (RF) localization and tracking technologies that are accurate, energy-efficient, robust, scalable, non-invasive and secure. The main challenges that are considered in this research work are obtaining fundamental limits of localization accuracy using received signal strength (RSS) information with directional antennas, and use of burst and intermittent measurements for localization. In this dissertation, we consider various RSS-based techniques that rely on existing wireless infrastructures to obtain location information of corresponding IoT devices. In the first approach, we present a detailed study on localization accuracy of UHF RF IDentification (RFID) systems considering realistic radiation pattern of directional antennas. Radiation patterns of antennas and antenna arrays may significantly affect RSS in wireless networks. The sensitivity of tag antennas and receiver antennas play a crucial role. In this research, we obtain the fundamental limits of localization accuracy considering radiation patterns and sensitivity of the antennas by deriving Cramer-Rao Lower Bounds (CRLBs) using estimation theory techniques. In the second approach, we consider a millimeter Wave (mmWave) system with linear antenna array using beamforming radiation patterns to localize user equipment in an indoor environment. In the third approach, we introduce a tracking and occupancy monitoring system that uses ambient, bursty, and intermittent WiFi probe requests radiated from mobile devices. Burst and intermittent signals are prominent characteristics of IoT devices; using these features, we propose a tracking technique that uses interacting multiple models (IMM) with Kalman filtering. Finally, we tackle the problem of indoor UAV navigation to a wireless source using its Rayleigh fading RSS measurements. We propose a UAV navigation technique based on Q-learning that is a model-free reinforcement learning technique to tackle the variation in the RSS caused by Rayleigh fading

    Directional Antenna System-Based DoA/RSS Estimation, Localization and Tracking in Future Wireless Networks: Algorithms and Performance Analysis

    Location information plays an important role in many emerging technologies such as robotics, autonomous vehicles, and augmented reality. Already now the majority of smartphone owners use their devices' localization capabilities for a broad range of location-based services. Currently, location information in smartphones is mostly obtained in a device-centric approach, where the device to be localized, here referred to as the target node (TN), estimates its own location using, for example, the global positioning system (GPS). However, TNs with wireless communication capabilities can be localized based on their transmitted signals by a third party. In particular, localization can be implemented as a functionality of a wireless network. Depending on the application area and implementation, this network-centric approach has several advantages compared to device-centric localization, such as reducing the energy consumption within the TNs, enabling localization of non-cooperative TNs, and making location information available in the network itself. Current generation wireless networks are already capable of coarse localization. However, these existing localization capabilities do not suffice for the challenging demands of future applications. The majority of approaches moreover does not exploit the fact that an increasing number of base stations (BSs) and user devices are equipped with directional antennas. However, directional antennas enable direction of arrival (DoA) estimation that can, in turn, serve as the basis for advanced localization and location tracking. In this thesis, we thus study the application of directional antennas for localization and location tracking in future generation wireless networks. The contributions of this thesis can be grouped into two topics.First, this thesis provides a detailed study of DoA/received signal strength (RSS) estimation and localization with a group of directional antennas herein denoted as sectorized antennas. This group of antennas is of particular interest as it encompasses a broad range of directional antennas that can be implemented with a single RF front-end. Thus, the hardware complexity of sectorized antennas is low in comparison to the conventionally used antenna arrays that require multiple transceiver branches. However, at the same time this means that DoA estimation with sectorized antennas has to be implemented in a fundamentally different way. In order to address these differences, the study of sectorized antennas in this thesis includes the derivation of Cramer-Rao bounds (CRBs) for DoA/RSS estimation and localization, the proposal of three different DoA/RSS estimators, as well as numerical and analytical performance evaluations of DoA/RSS estimation and localization using sectorized antennas.Second, this thesis deals with localization based on the fusion of DoA and RSS estimates as well as DoA and time of arrival (ToA) estimates. It is shown that the combination of these estimates can result in a much increased localization performance compared to a localization based on one of these estimates alone. For the localization based on DoA/RSS estimates, a mechanism explaining this improvement is revealed by means of a CRB analysis. Thereafter, DoA/RSS-based fusion is further studied using an extended Kalman filter (EKF) as an example location tracking algorithm. Finally, an EKF is proposed that tracks the location of a TN by fusing DoA and ToA estimates. Apart from a significantly improved tracking performance, this joint DoA/ToA-EKF moreover provides estimates for the TN device clock offset and is able to localize the TN in situations where a classical DoA-only EKF fails to provide a location estimate altogether.Overall, this thesis thus provides insights into benefits of localization and location tracking using directional antennas, accompanied by specific DoA/RSS estimation, localization and location tracking solutions, as well as design guidelines for implementing localization systems in future generation wireless networks

    CIR Parametric Rules Precocity For Ranging Error Mitigation In IR-UWB

    The cutting-edge technology to support high ranging accuracy within the indoor environment is Impulse Radio Ultra Wide Band (IR-UWB) standard. Besides accuracy, IR-UWB’s low-complex architecture and low power consumption align well with mobile devices. A prime challenge in indoor IR-UWB based localization is to achieve a position accuracy under non-line-of-sight (NLOS) and multipath propagation (MPP) conditions. Another challenge is to achieve acceptable accuracy in the conditions mentioned above without any significant increase in latency and computational burden. This dissertation proposes a solution for addressing the accuracy and reliability problem of indoor localization system satisfying acceptable delay or computational complexity overhead. The proposed methodology is based on rules for identification of line-of-sight (LOS) and NLOS and the range error bias estimation and correction due to NLOS and MPP conditions. The proposed methodology provides accuracy for two major application domains, namely, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and indoor tracking and navigation (ITN). This dissertation offers two different solutions for the localization problem. The first solution is a rules-based classification of LOS / NLOS and geometric-based range correction for WSN. In the first solution, the Boolean logic based classification is designed for identification of LOS/NLOS. The logic is based on channel impulse response (CIR) parameters. The second solution is based on fuzzy logic. The fuzzy based solution is appealing well for the stringent precision requirements in ITN. In this solution, the parametric Boolean logic from the first solution is converted and expanded into rules. These rules are implemented into a fuzzy logic based mechanism for designing a fuzzy inference system. The system estimates the ranging errors and correcting unmitigated ranges. The expanded rules and designed methodology are based on theoretical analysis and empirical observations of the parameters. The rules accommodate the parameters uncertainties for estimating the ranging error through the relationship between the input parameters uncertainties and ranging error using fuzzy inference mechanism. The proposed solutions are evaluated using real-world measurements in different indoor environments. The performance of the proposed solutions is also evaluated in terms of true classification rate, residual ranging errors’ cumulative distributions and probability density distributions, as well as outage probabilities. Evaluation results show that the true classification rate is more than 95%. Moreover, using the proposed fuzzy logic based solution, the residual errors convergence of 90% is attained for error threshold of 10 cm, and the reliability of the localization system is also more than 90% for error threshold of 15 cm

    A Review of Indoor Millimeter Wave Device-based Localization and Device-free Sensing Technologies and Applications

    The commercial availability of low-cost millimeter wave (mmWave) communication and radar devices is starting to improve the penetration of such technologies in consumer markets, paving the way for large-scale and dense deployments in fifth-generation (5G)-and-beyond as well as 6G networks. At the same time, pervasive mmWave access will enable device localization and device-free sensing with unprecedented accuracy, especially with respect to sub-6 GHz commercial-grade devices. This paper surveys the state of the art in device-based localization and device-free sensing using mmWave communication and radar devices, with a focus on indoor deployments. We first overview key concepts about mmWave signal propagation and system design. Then, we provide a detailed account of approaches and algorithms for localization and sensing enabled by mmWaves. We consider several dimensions in our analysis, including the main objectives, techniques, and performance of each work, whether each research reached some degree of implementation, and which hardware platforms were used for this purpose. We conclude by discussing that better algorithms for consumer-grade devices, data fusion methods for dense deployments, as well as an educated application of machine learning methods are promising, relevant and timely research directions.Comment: 43 pages, 13 figures.     Design and theoretical analysis of advanced power based positioning in RF system

    Accurate locating and tracking of people and resources has become a fundamental requirement for many applications. The global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) is widely used. But its accuracy suffers from signal obstruction by buildings, multipath fading, and disruption due to jamming and spoof. Hence, it is required to supplement GPS with inertial sensors and indoor localization schemes that make use of WiFi APs or beacon nodes. In the GPS-challenging or fault scenario, radio-frequency (RF) infrastructure based localization schemes can be a fallback solution for robust navigation. For the indoor/outdoor transition scenario, we propose hypothesis test based fusion method to integrate multi-modal localization sensors. In the first paper, a ubiquitous tracking using motion and location sensor (UTMLS) is proposed. As a fallback approach, power-based schemes are cost-effective when compared with the existing ToA or AoA schemes. However, traditional power-based positioning methods suffer from low accuracy and are vulnerable to environmental fading. Also, the expected accuracy of power-based localization is not well understood but is needed to derive the hypothesis test for the fusion scheme. Hence, in paper 2-5, we focus on developing more accurate power-based localization schemes. The second paper improves the power-based range estimation accuracy by estimating the LoS component. The ranging error model in fading channel is derived. The third paper introduces the LoS-based positioning method with corresponding theoretical limits and error models. In the fourth and fifth paper, a novel antenna radiation-pattern-aware power-based positioning (ARPAP) system and power contour circle fitting (PCCF) algorithm are proposed to address antenna directivity effect on power-based localization.     On the Temporal Effects of Mobile Blockers in Urban Millimeter-Wave Cellular Scenarios

    Millimeter-wave (mmWave) propagation is known to be severely affected by the blockage of the line-of-sight (LoS) path. In contrast to microwave systems, at shorter mmWave wavelengths such blockage can be caused by human bodies, where their mobility within environment makes wireless channel alternate between the blocked and non-blocked LoS states. Following the recent 3GPP requirements on modeling the dynamic blockage as well as the temporal consistency of the channel at mmWave frequencies, in this paper a new model for predicting the state of a user in the presence of mobile blockers for representative 3GPP scenarios is developed: urban micro cell (UMi) street canyon and park/stadium/square. It is demonstrated that the blockage effects produce an alternating renewal process with exponentially distributed non-blocked intervals, and blocked durations that follow the general distribution. The following metrics are derived (i) the mean and the fraction of time spent in blocked/non-blocked state, (ii) the residual blocked/non-blocked time, and (iii) the time-dependent conditional probability of having blockage/no blockage at time t1 given that there was blockage/no blockage at time t0. The latter is a function of the arrival rate (intensity), width, and height of moving blockers, distance to the mmWave access point (AP), as well as the heights of the AP and the user device. The proposed model can be used for system-level characterization of mmWave cellular communication systems. For example, the optimal height and the maximum coverage radius of the mmWave APs are derived, while satisfying the required mean data rate constraint.
