    Comprehensive Review of Opinion Summarization

    The abundance of opinions on the web has kindled the study of opinion summarization over the last few years. People have introduced various techniques and paradigms to solving this special task. This survey attempts to systematically investigate the different techniques and approaches used in opinion summarization. We provide a multi-perspective classification of the approaches used and highlight some of the key weaknesses of these approaches. This survey also covers evaluation techniques and data sets used in studying the opinion summarization problem. Finally, we provide insights into some of the challenges that are left to be addressed as this will help set the trend for future research in this area.unpublishednot peer reviewe

    Business Ontology for Evaluating Corporate Social Responsibility

    This paper presents a software solution that is developed to automatically classify companies by taking into account their level of social responsibility. The application is based on ontologies and on intelligent agents. In order to obtain the data needed to evaluate companies, we developed a web crawling module that analyzes the company’s website and the documents that are available online such as social responsibility report, mission statement, employment structure, etc. Based on a predefined CSR ontology, the web crawling module extracts the terms that are linked to corporate social responsibility. By taking into account the extracted qualitative data, an intelligent agent, previously trained on a set of companies, computes the qualitative values, which are then included in the classification model based on neural networks. The proposed ontology takes into consideration the guidelines proposed by the “ISO 26000 Standard for Social Responsibility”. Having this model, and being aware of the positive relationship between Corporate Social Responsibility and financial performance, an overall perspective on each company’s activity can be configured, this being useful not only to the company’s creditors, auditors, stockholders, but also to its consumers.corporate social responsibility, ISO 26000 Standard for Social Responsibility, ontology, web crawling, intelligent agent, corporate performance, POS tagging, opinion mining, sentiment analysis

    Inferring Interpersonal Relations in Narrative Summaries

    Characterizing relationships between people is fundamental for the understanding of narratives. In this work, we address the problem of inferring the polarity of relationships between people in narrative summaries. We formulate the problem as a joint structured prediction for each narrative, and present a model that combines evidence from linguistic and semantic features, as well as features based on the structure of the social community in the text. We also provide a clustering-based approach that can exploit regularities in narrative types. e.g., learn an affinity for love-triangles in romantic stories. On a dataset of movie summaries from Wikipedia, our structured models provide more than a 30% error-reduction over a competitive baseline that considers pairs of characters in isolation

    Enhanced services for targeted information retrieval by event extraction and data mining

    Where Information Retrieval (IR) and Text Categorization delivers a set of (ranked) documents according to a query, users of large document collections would rather like to receive answers. Question-answering from text has already been the goal of the Message Understanding Conferences. Since then, the task of text understanding has been reduced to several more tractable tasks, most prominently Named Entity Recognition (NER) and Relation Extraction. Now, pieces can be put together to form enhanced services added on an IR system. In this paper, we present a framework which combines standard IR with machine learning and (pre-)processing for NER in order to extract events from a large document collection. Some questions can already be answered by particular events. Other questions require an analysis of a set of events. Hence, the extracted events become input to another machine learning process which delivers the final output to the user's question. Our case study is the public collection of minutes of plenary sessions of the German parliament and of petitions to the German parliament. --

    This thesis presents new methods that use natural language processing (NLP) driven models for summarizing research in scientific fields. Given a topic query in the form of a text string, we present methods for finding research articles relevant to the topic as well as summarization algorithms that use lexical and discourse information present in the text of these articles to generate coherent and readable extractive summaries of past research on the topic. In addition to summarizing prior research, good survey articles should also forecast future trends.     Structured prediction models for argumentative claim parsing from text

    The internet abounds with opinions expressed in text. While a number of natural language processing techniques have been proposed for opinion analysis from text, most offer only a shallow analysis without providing any insights into reasons supporting the opinions. In online discussions, however, opinions are typically expressed as arguments, consisting of a set of claims endowed with internal semantic structure amenable to deeper analysis. In this article, we introduce the task of argumentative claim parsing (ACP), which aims at extracting semantic structures of claims from argumentative text. The task is split into two subtasks: claim segmentation and claim structuring. We present a new dataset on two discussion topics with claims manually annotated for both subtasks. Inspired by structured prediction approaches, we propose a number of supervised machine learning models for the ACP task, including deep learning, chain classifier, and joint learning models. Our experiments reveal that claim segmentation is a relatively feasible task, with the best-performing model achieving up to 0.37 and 0.79 exact and lenient macro-averaged F1-score, respectively. Claim structuring, however, proved to be a more challenging task, with the best-performing models achieving at most 0.08 macro-averaged F1-score

    Analyzing user reviews of messaging Apps for competitive analysis

    Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Data Science and Advanced Analytics, specialization in Data ScienceThe rise of various messaging apps has resulted in intensively fierce competition, and the era of Web 2.0 enables business managers to gain competitive intelligence from user-generated content (UGC). Text-mining UGC for competitive intelligence has been drawing great interest of researchers. However, relevant studies mostly focus on industries such as hospitality and products, and few studies applied such techniques to effectively perform competitive analysis for messaging apps. Here, we conducted a competitive analysis based on topic modeling and sentiment analysis by text-mining 27,479 user reviews of four iOS messaging apps, namely Messenger, WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram. The results show that the performance of topic modeling and sentiment analysis is encouraging, and that a combination of the extracted app aspect-based topics and the adjusted sentiment scores can effectively reveal meaningful competitive insights into user concerns, competitive strengths and weaknesses as well as changes of user sentiments over time. We anticipate that this study will not only advance the existing literature on competitive analysis using text mining techniques for messaging apps but also help existing players and new entrants in the market to sharpen their competitive edge by better understanding their user needs and the industry trends
