A derivational rephrasing experiment for question answering
In Knowledge Management, variations in information expressions have proven a
real challenge. In particular, classical semantic relations (e.g. synonymy) do
not connect words with different parts-of-speech. The method proposed tries to
address this issue. It consists in building a derivational resource from a
morphological derivation tool together with derivational guidelines from a
dictionary in order to store only correct derivatives. This resource, combined
with a syntactic parser, a semantic disambiguator and some derivational
patterns, helps to reformulate an original sentence while keeping the initial
meaning in a convincing manner This approach has been evaluated in three
different ways: the precision of the derivatives produced from a lemma; its
ability to provide well-formed reformulations from an original sentence,
preserving the initial meaning; its impact on the results coping with a real
issue, ie a question answering task . The evaluation of this approach through a
question answering system shows the pros and cons of this system, while
foreshadowing some interesting future developments
Handling non-compositionality in multilingual CNLs
In this paper, we describe methods for handling multilingual
non-compositional constructions in the framework of GF. We specifically look at
methods to detect and extract non-compositional phrases from parallel texts and
propose methods to handle such constructions in GF grammars. We expect that the
methods to handle non-compositional constructions will enrich CNLs by providing
more flexibility in the design of controlled languages. We look at two specific
use cases of non-compositional constructions: a general-purpose method to
detect and extract multilingual multiword expressions and a procedure to
identify nominal compounds in German. We evaluate our procedure for multiword
expressions by performing a qualitative analysis of the results. For the
experiments on nominal compounds, we incorporate the detected compounds in a
full SMT pipeline and evaluate the impact of our method in machine translation

A natural language interface to databases
The development of a Natural Language Interface which is semantic-based and uses Conceptual Dependency representation is presented. The system was developed using Lisp and currently runs on a Symbolics Lisp machine. A key point is that the parser handles morphological analysis, which expands its capabilities of understanding more words
Computerization of African languages-French dictionaries
This paper relates work done during the DiLAF project. It consists in
converting 5 bilingual African language-French dictionaries originally in Word
format into XML following the LMF model. The languages processed are Bambara,
Hausa, Kanuri, Tamajaq and Songhai-zarma, still considered as under-resourced
languages concerning Natural Language Processing tools. Once converted, the
dictionaries are available online on the Jibiki platform for lookup and
modification. The DiLAF project is first presented. A description of each
dictionary follows. Then, the conversion methodology from .doc format to XML
files is presented. A specific point on the usage of Unicode follows. Then,
each step of the conversion into XML and LMF is detailed. The last part
presents the Jibiki lexical resources management platform used for the project.Comment: 8 page
