Yet Another Tutorial of Disturbance Observer: Robust Stabilization and Recovery of Nominal Performance
This paper presents a tutorial-style review on the recent results about the
disturbance observer (DOB) in view of robust stabilization and recovery of the
nominal performance. The analysis is based on the case when the bandwidth of
Q-filter is large, and it is explained in a pedagogical manner that, even in
the presence of plant uncertainties and disturbances, the behavior of real
uncertain plant can be made almost similar to that of disturbance-free nominal
system both in the transient and in the steady-state. The conventional DOB is
interpreted in a new perspective, and its restrictions and extensions are
discussed
A family of asymptotically stable control laws for flexible robots based on a passivity approach
A general family of asymptotically stabilizing control laws is introduced for a class of nonlinear Hamiltonian systems. The inherent passivity property of this class of systems and the Passivity Theorem are used to show the closed-loop input/output stability which is then related to the internal state space stability through the stabilizability and detectability condition. Applications of these results include fully actuated robots, flexible joint robots, and robots with link flexibility
Robust Decentralized Secondary Frequency Control in Power Systems: Merits and Trade-Offs
Frequency restoration in power systems is conventionally performed by
broadcasting a centralized signal to local controllers. As a result of the
energy transition, technological advances, and the scientific interest in
distributed control and optimization methods, a plethora of distributed
frequency control strategies have been proposed recently that rely on
communication amongst local controllers.
In this paper we propose a fully decentralized leaky integral controller for
frequency restoration that is derived from a classic lag element. We study
steady-state, asymptotic optimality, nominal stability, input-to-state
stability, noise rejection, transient performance, and robustness properties of
this controller in closed loop with a nonlinear and multivariable power system
model. We demonstrate that the leaky integral controller can strike an
acceptable trade-off between performance and robustness as well as between
asymptotic disturbance rejection and transient convergence rate by tuning its
DC gain and time constant. We compare our findings to conventional
decentralized integral control and distributed-averaging-based integral control
in theory and simulations
Issues in the design of switched linear systems : a benchmark study
In this paper we present a tutorial overview of some of the issues that arise in the design of switched linear control systems. Particular emphasis is given to issues relating to stability and control system realisation. A benchmark regulation problem is then presented. This problem is most naturally solved by means of a switched control design. The challenge to the community is to design a control system that meets the required performance specifications and permits the application of rigorous analysis techniques. A simple design solution is presented and the limitations of currently available analysis techniques are illustrated with reference to this example
Fast Adaptive Robust Differentiator Based Robust-Adaptive Control of Grid-Tied Inverters with a New L Filter Design Method
In this research, a new nonlinear and adaptive state feedback controller with a fast-adaptive robust differentiator is presented for grid-tied inverters. All parameters and external disturbances are taken as uncertain in the design of the proposed controller without the disadvantages of singularity and over-parameterization. A robust differentiator based on the second order sliding mode is also developed with a fast-adaptive structure to be able to consider the time derivative of the virtual control input. Unlike the conventional backstepping, the proposed differentiator overcomes the problem of explosion of complexity. In the closed-loop control system, the three phase source currents and direct current (DC) bus voltage are assumed to be available for feedback. Using the Lyapunov stability theory, it is proven that the overall control system has the global asymptotic stability. In addition, a new simple L filter design method based on the total harmonic distortion approach is also proposed. Simulations and experimental results show that the proposed controller assurances drive the tracking errors to zero with better performance, and it is robust against all uncertainties. Moreover, the proposed L filter design method matches the total harmonic distortion (THD) aim in the design with the experimental result

Predictive Control for Alleviation of Gust Loads on Very Flexible Aircraft
In this work the dynamics of very flexible aircraft are described by a set of non-linear, multi-disciplinary equations of motion. Primary structural components are represented by a geometrically-exact composite beam model which captures the large dynamic deformations of the aircraft and the interaction between rigid-body and elastic degrees-of-freedom. In addition, an implementation of the unsteady vortex-lattice method capable of handling arbitrary kinematics is used to capture the unsteady, three-dimensional flow-eld around the aircraft as it deforms. Linearization of this coupled nonlinear description, which can in general be about a nonlinear reference state, is performed to yield relatively high-order linear time-invariant state-space models. Subsequent reduction of these models using standard balanced truncation results in low-order models suitable for the synthesis of online, optimization-based control schemes that incorporate actuator constraints. Predictive controllers are synthesized using these reduced-order models and applied to nonlinear simulations of the plant dynamics where they are shown to be superior to equivalent optimal linear controllers (LQR) for problems in which constraints are active
