    The Work in this thesis is concentrated on the study of discrete curvature as an important geometric property of objects, useful in describing their shape. The main focus is on the study of the methods to measure the discrete curvature on polyhedral surfaces. The curvatures associated with a polyhedral surface are concentrated around its vertices and along its edges. An existing method to evaluate the curvature at a vertex is the Angle Deficit, which also characterises vertices into flat, convex or saddle. In discrete surfaces other kinds of vertices are possible which this method cannot identify. The concept of Total Absolute Curvature (TAC) has been established to overcome this limitation, as a measure of curvature independent of the orientation of local geometry. However no correct implementation of the TAC exists for polyhedral surfaces, besides very simple cases.For two-dimensional discrete surfaces in space, represented as polygonal meshes, the TAC is measured by means of the Polyhedral Gauss Map (PGM) of vertices. This is a representation of the curvature of a vertex as an area on the surface of a sphere. Positive and negative components of the curvature of a vertex are distinguished as spherical polygons on the PGM. Core contributions of this thesis are the methods to identify these polygons and give a sign to them. The PGM provides a correct characterisation of vertices of any type, from basic convex and saddle types to complex mixed vertices, which have both positive and negative curvature in them.Another contribution is a visualisation program developed to show the PGM using 3D computer graphics. This program helps in the understanding and analysis of the results provided by the numerical computations of curvature. It also provides interactive tools to show the detailed information about the curvature of vertices.Finally a polygon simplification application is used to compare the curvature measures provided by the Angle Deficit and PGM methods. Various sample meshes are decimated using both methods and the simplified results compared with the original meshes. These experiments show how the TAC can be used to more effectively preserve the shape of an object. Several other applications that benefit in a similar way with the use of the TAC as a curvature measure are also proposed

    Geomorphometry is the science of quantitative land surface analysis. It gathers various mathematical, statistical and image processing techniques to quantify morphological, hydrological, ecological and other aspects of a land surface. Common synonyms for geomorphometry are geomorphological analysis, terrain morphometry or terrain analysis and land surface analysis. The typical input to geomorphometric analysis is a square-grid representation of the land surface: a digital elevation (or land surface) model. The first Geomorphometry conference dates back to 2009 and it took place in Zürich, Switzerland. Subsequent events were in Redlands (California), Nánjīng (China), Poznan (Poland) and Boulder (Colorado), at about two years intervals. The International Society for Geomorphometry (ISG) and the Organizing Committee scheduled the sixth Geomorphometry conference in Perugia, Italy, June 2020. Worldwide safety measures dictated the event could not be held in presence, and we excluded the possibility to hold the conference remotely. Thus, we postponed the event by one year - it will be organized in June 2021, in Perugia, hosted by the Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection of the Italian National Research Council (CNR IRPI) and the Department of Physics and Geology of the University of Perugia. One of the reasons why we postponed the conference, instead of canceling, was the encouraging number of submitted abstracts. Abstracts are actually short papers consisting of four pages, including figures and references, and they were peer-reviewed by the Scientific Committee of the conference. This book is a collection of the contributions revised by the authors after peer review. We grouped them in seven classes, as follows: • Data and methods (13 abstracts) • Geoheritage (6 abstracts) • Glacial processes (4 abstracts) • LIDAR and high resolution data (8 abstracts) • Morphotectonics (8 abstracts) • Natural hazards (12 abstracts) • Soil erosion and fluvial processes (16 abstracts) The 67 abstracts represent 80% of the initial contributions. The remaining ones were either not accepted after peer review or withdrawn by their Authors. Most of the contributions contain original material, and an extended version of a subset of them will be included in a special issue of a regular journal publication

    The second International Conference on Monitoring and Management of Visitor Flows in recreational and protected areas (MMV 2) -conference provided a forum for research presentations and for exchange of information and experience of managerial policies, problems, practices and solutions regarding issues related to monitoring and management of visitor flows in recreational and protected areas. These proceedings cover ten research topics, which were chosen to reflect current on-going research work internationally in the field of visitor monitoring and management. Monitoring visitor flows and also other types of recreational inventories are discussed in 16 articles and four posters on visitor monitoring methods, experiences of national, regional and on-site visitor inventories and visitor flow modeling and data management. Nineteen papers and three posters are discussing visitor management research from several perspectives. Articles related to issues of visitor conflicts, implementation of visitor information in management processes, different aspects of sustainability and carrying capacity issues in recreational settings make the largest group of papers. The third major subject group of articles (16) deal with visitor management policy issues, and nature tourism policies in recreational and protected areas. The last topics include economic and social impacts of recreation and nature tourism in the surroundings communities, regions and countries
