    Command and control for distributed lethality

    Exercising command and control (C2) during naval distributed lethality operations presents a complex system of systems (SOS) challenge in support of maritime control. Applying a model based systems engineering (MBSE) approach to C2 within the distributed lethality environment requires development of methodologies to provide definition and structure for existing operational concepts while providing conceptual growth space for new operational techniques. This study develops a systems architecture approach to defining the C2 models for decentralized and distributed command structures and proposes criteria for assessing functionality and impacts to the C2 of naval platforms during distributed lethality operations using MBSE. The C2 modeling for distributed lethality documents the interconnections and relationship of information flow and the system requirements for maintaining the interconnection links during a simulated operational deployment of an adaptive force package (AFP). This modeling structure provides for an architecture view of the functions and measures of effectiveness that provide criteria for decision making during the operational planning of a distributed lethality mission. Development of an initial architecture enables future modeling and architecture refinement through simulations of the C2 structure and further research into technologies and methods of effective communication systems.http://archive.org/details/commandndcontrol1094555534Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited

    Control Architecture Modeling for Future Power Systems

    Uncontrollable power generation, distributed energy resources, controllable demand, etc. are fundamental aspects of energy systems largely based on renewable energy supply. These technologies have in common that they contradict the conventional categories of electric power system operation. As their introduction has proceeded incrementally in the past, operation strategies of the power system could be adapted. For example much more wind power could be integrated than originally anticipated, largely due to the flexibility reserves already present in the power system, and the possibility of interregional electricity exchange. However, at the same time, it seems that the overall system design cannot keep up by simply adapting in response to changes, but that also new strategies have to be designed in anticipation. Changes to the electricity markets have been suggested to adapt to the limited predictability of wind power, and several new control strategies have been proposed, in particular to enable the control of distributed energy resources, including for example, distributed generation or electric vehicles. Market designs addressing the procurement of balancing resources are highly dependent on the operation strategies specifying the resource requirements. How should one decide which control strategy and market configuration is best for a future power system? Most research up to this point has addressed single isolated aspects of this design problem. Those of the ideas that fit with current markets and operation concepts are lucky; they can be evaluated on the present design. But how could they be evaluated on a potential future power system? Approaches are required that support the design and evaluation of power system operation and control in context of future energy scenarios. This work addresses this challenge, not by providing a universal solution, but by providing basic modeling methodology that enables better problem formulation and by suggesting an approach to addressing the general chicken/egg problem of planning and re-design of system operation and control. The dissertation first focuses on the development of models, diagrams, that support the conceptual design of control and operation strategies, where a central theme is the focus on modeling system goals and functions rather than system structure. The perspective is then shifted toward long-term energy scenarios and adaptation of power system operation, considering the integration of energy scenario models with the re-design of operation strategies. The main contributions in the first part are, firstly, by adaptation of an existing functional modeling approach called Multilevel Flow Modeling (MFM) to the power systems domain, identifying the means-ends composition of control levels and development of principles for the consistent modeling of control structures, a formalization of control-as-a-service; secondly, the formal mapping of fluctuating and controllable resources to a multi-scale and multi-stage representation of control and operation structures; and finally the application to some concrete study cases, including a present system balancing, and proposed control structures such as Microgrids and Cells. In the second part, the main contributions are the outline of a formation strategy, integrating the design and model-based evaluation of future power system operation concepts with iterative energy scenario development. Finally, a new modeling framework for development and evaluation of power system operation in context of energy-storage based power system balancing is introduced.<br/

    Modeling and Controlling a Hybrid Multi-Agent based Microgrid in Presence of Different Physical and Cyber Components

    This dissertation starts with modeling of two different and important parts of the distribution power systems, i.e. distribution line and photovoltaic (PV) systems. Firstly, it studies different approximation methods and develops a new approach for simplification of Carson\u27s equations to model distribution lines for unbalanced power flow and short circuit analysis. The results of applying the proposed method on a three-phase unbalanced distribution system are compared with different existing methods as well as actual impedance values obtained from numerical integration method. Then steady state modeling and optimal placing of multiple PV system are investigated in order to reduce the total loss in the system. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed method in minimizing the total loss in a distribution power system.;The dissertation starts the discussion about microgrid modeling and control by implementing a novel frequency control approach in a microgrid. This study has been carried out step by step by modeling different part of the power system and proposing different algorithms. Firstly, the application of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) accompanied with Energy Storage Systems (ESS) in a hybrid system is studied in the presence of Distributed Generation (DG) resources in Load Frequency Control (LFC) problem of microgrid power system with significant penetration of wind speed disturbances. The next step is to investigate the effect of PHEVs in modelling and controlling the microgid. Therefore, system with different penetrations of PHEVs and different stochastic behaviors of PHEVs is modeled. Different kinds of control approaches, including PI control as conventional method and proposed optimal LQR and dynamic programming methods, have been utilized and the results have been compared with each other. Then, Multi Agent System (MAS) is utilized as a control solution which contributes the cyber aspects of microgrid system. The modeled microgrid along with dynamic models of different components is implemented in a centralized multi-agent based structure. The robustness of the proposed controller has been tested against different frequency changes including cyber attack implications with different timing and severity. New attack detection through learning method is also proposed and tested. The results show improvement in frequency response of the microgrid system using the proposed control method and defense strategy against cyber attacks.;Finally, a new multi-agent based control method along with an advanced secondary voltage and frequency control using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Adaptive Dynamic Programming (ADP) is proposed and tested in the modeled microgrid considering nonlinear heterogeneous dynamic models of DGs. The results are shown and compared with conventional control approaches and different multi-agent structures. It is observed that the results are improved by using the new multi-agent structure and secondary control method.;In summary, contributions of this dissertation center in three main topics. Firstly, new accurate methods for modeling the distribution line impedance and PV system is developed. Then advanced control and defense strategy method for frequency regulation against cyber intrusions and load changes in a microgrid is proposed. Finally, a new hierarchical multi-agent based control algorithm is designed for secondary voltage and frequency control of the microgrid. (Abstract shortened by ProQuest.)

    Thermal Modeling of an Advanced Geared Turbofan for Distributed Engine Control Application

    Reliability and life-expectancy of gas turbine engine components is very much correlated to the temperature environment in which they operate. This is no different for control system components, especially those with electronic parts. In recent years, the concept of Distributed Engine Control (DEC) has emerged to address the limitations of the current centralized control implementation. This new approach involves relocating control system components from a relatively benign environment to the harsher thermal environment of the engine casing and its surrounding structures and cavities. In this paper, an approach to modeling the gas turbine thermal environment is described. The modeling approach is applied to a 3rd generation geared turbofan design with a focus on the engine locations where control instrumentation and actuation could be installed. The analysis was conducted with an eye toward component reliability and service life as it relates to the thermal environment. The results were found to be reasonable. Furthermore, the model is shown to execute in real-time within a multi-model simulation environment that demonstrates the capability to interact with hardware to drive test equipment

    Piezo-electromechanical smart materials with distributed arrays of piezoelectric transducers: Current and upcoming applications

    This review paper intends to gather and organize a series of works which discuss the possibility of exploiting the mechanical properties of distributed arrays of piezoelectric transducers. The concept can be described as follows: on every structural member one can uniformly distribute an array of piezoelectric transducers whose electric terminals are to be connected to a suitably optimized electric waveguide. If the aim of such a modification is identified to be the suppression of mechanical vibrations then the optimal electric waveguide is identified to be the 'electric analog' of the considered structural member. The obtained electromechanical systems were called PEM (PiezoElectroMechanical) structures. The authors especially focus on the role played by Lagrange methods in the design of these analog circuits and in the study of PEM structures and we suggest some possible research developments in the conception of new devices, in their study and in their technological application. Other potential uses of PEMs, such as Structural Health Monitoring and Energy Harvesting, are described as well. PEM structures can be regarded as a particular kind of smart materials, i.e. materials especially designed and engineered to show a specific andwell-defined response to external excitations: for this reason, the authors try to find connection between PEM beams and plates and some micromorphic materials whose properties as carriers of waves have been studied recently. Finally, this paper aims to establish some links among some concepts which are used in different cultural groups, as smart structure, metamaterial and functional structural modifications, showing how appropriate would be to avoid the use of different names for similar concepts.     Space Structures: Issues in Dynamics and Control

    A selective technical overview is presented on the vibration and control of large space structures, the analysis, design, and construction of which will require major technical contributions from the civil/structural, mechanical, and extended engineering communities. The immediacy of the U.S. space station makes the particular emphasis placed on large space structures and their control appropriate. The space station is but one part of the space program, and includes the lunar base, which the space station is to service. This paper attempts to summarize some of the key technical issues and hence provide a starting point for further involvement. The first half of this paper provides an introduction and overview of large space structures and their dynamics; the latter half discusses structural control, including controlā€system design and nonlinearities. A crucial aspect of the large space structures problem is that dynamics and control must be considered simultaneously; the problems cannot be addressed individually and coupled as an afterthought

    Systems identification technology development for large space systems

    A methodology for synthesizinng systems identification, both parameter and state, estimation and related control schemes for flexible aerospace structures is developed with emphasis on the Maypole hoop column antenna as a real world application. Modeling studies of the Maypole cable hoop membrane type antenna are conducted using a transfer matrix numerical analysis approach. This methodology was chosen as particularly well suited for handling a large number of antenna configurations of a generic type. A dedicated transfer matrix analysis, both by virtue of its specialization and the inherently easy compartmentalization of the formulation and numerical procedures, is significantly more efficient not only in computer time required but, more importantly, in the time needed to review and interpret the results

    On Agent-Based Software Engineering

    Agent-based computing represents an exciting new synthesis both for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and, more generally, Computer Science. It has the potential to significantly improve the theory and the practice of modeling, designing, and implementing computer systems. Yet, to date, there has been little systematic analysis of what makes the agent-based approach such an appealing and powerful computational model. Moreover, even less effort has been devoted to discussing the inherent disadvantages that stem from adopting an agent-oriented view. Here both sets of issues are explored. The standpoint of this analysis is the role of agent-based software in solving complex, real-world problems. In particular, it will be argued that the development of robust and scalable software systems requires autonomous agents that can complete their objectives while situated in a dynamic and uncertain environment, that can engage in rich, high-level social interactions, and that can operate within flexible organisational structures
