    Multi-objective Optimisation in Additive Manufacturing

    Additive Manufacturing (AM) has demonstrated great potential to advance product design and manufacturing, and has showed higher flexibility than conventional manufacturing techniques for the production of small volume, complex and customised components. In an economy focused on the need to develop customised and hi-tech products, there is increasing interest in establishing AM technologies as a more efficient production approach for high value products such as aerospace and biomedical products. Nevertheless, the use of AM processes, for even small to medium volume production faces a number of issues in the current state of the technology. AM production is normally used for making parts with complex geometry which implicates the assessment of numerous processing options or choices; the wrong choice of process parameters can result in poor surface quality, onerous manufacturing time and energy waste, and thus increased production costs and resources. A few commonly used AM processes require the presence of cellular support structures for the production of overhanging parts. Depending on the object complexity their removal can be impossible or very time (and resources) consuming. Currently, there is a lack of tools to advise the AM operator on the optimal choice of process parameters. This prevents the diffusion of AM as an efficient production process for enterprises, and as affordable access to democratic product development for individual users. Research in literature has focused mainly on the optimisation of single criteria for AM production. An integrated predictive modelling and optimisation technique has not yet been well established for identifying an efficient process set up for complicated products which often involve critical building requirements. For instance, there are no robust methods for the optimal design of complex cellular support structures, and most of the software commercially available today does not provide adequate guidance on how to optimally orientate the part into the machine bed, or which particular combination of cellular structures need to be used as support. The choice of wrong support and orientation can degenerate into structure collapse during an AM process such as Selective Laser Melting (SLM), due to the high thermal stress in the junctions between fillets of different cells. Another issue of AM production is the limited parts’ surface quality typically generated by the discrete deposition and fusion of material. This research has focused on the formation of surface morphology of AM parts. Analysis of SLM parts showed that roughness measured was different from that predicted through a classic model based on pure geometrical consideration on the stair step profile. Experiments also revealed the presence of partially bonded particles on the surface; an explanation of this phenomenon has been proposed. Results have been integrated into a novel mathematical model for the prediction of surface roughness of SLM parts. The model formulated correctly describes the observed trend of the experimental data, and thus provides an accurate prediction of surface roughness. This thesis aims to deliver an effective computational methodology for the multi- objective optimisation of the main building conditions that affect process efficiency of AM production. For this purpose, mathematical models have been formulated for the determination of parts’ surface quality, manufacturing time and energy consumption, and for the design of optimal cellular support structures. All the predictive models have been used to evaluate multiple performance and costs objectives; all the objectives are typically contrasting; and all greatly affected by the part’s build orientation. A multi-objective optimisation technique has been developed to visualise and identify optimal trade-offs between all the contrastive objectives for the most efficient AM production.     Adaptiver Suchansatz zur multidisziplinÀren Optimierung von Leichtbaustrukturen unter Verwendung hybrider Metaheuristik

    Within the last few years environmental regulations, safety requirements and market competitions forced the automotive industry to open up a wide range of new technologies. Lightweight design is considered as one of the most innovative concepts to fulfil environmental, safety and many other objectives at competitive prices. Choosing the best design and production process in the development period is the most significant link in the automobile production chain. A wide range of design and process parameters needs to be evaluated to achieve numerous goals of production. These goals often stand in conflict with each other. In addition to the variation of the concepts and following the objectives, some limitations such as manufacturing restrictions, financial limits, and deadlines influence the choice of the best combination of variables. This study introduces a structural optimization tool for assemblies made of sheet metal, e.g. the automobile body, based on parametrization and evaluation of concepts in CAD and CAE. This methodology focuses on those concepts, which leads to the use of the right amount of light and strong material in the right place, instead of substituting the whole structure with the new material. An adaptive hybrid metaheuristic algorithm is designed to eliminate all factors that would lead to a local minimum instead of global optimum. Finding the global optimum is granted by using some explorative and exploitative search heuristics, which are intelligently organized by a central controller. Reliability, accuracy and the speed of the proposed algorithm are validated via a comparative study with similar algorithms for an academic optimization problem, which shows valuable results. Since structures might be subject to a wide range of load cases, e.g. static, cyclic, dynamic, temperature-dependent etc., these requirements need to be addressed by a multidisciplinary optimization algorithm. To handle the nonlinear response of objectives and to tackle the time-consuming FEM analyses in crash situations, a surrogate model is implemented in the optimization tool. The ability of such tool to present the optimum results in multi-objective problems is improved by using some user-selected fitness functions. Finally, an exemplary sub-assembly made of sheet metal parts from a car body is optimized to enhance both, static load case and crashworthiness.Die Automobilindustrie hat in den letzten Jahren unter dem Druck von Umweltvorschriften, Sicherheitsanforderungen und wettbewerbsfĂ€higem Markt neue Wege auf dem Gebiet der Technologien eröffnet. Die Wahl des besten Designs und Verfahrens fĂŒr Produktionen in der Entwicklungsphase ist der wichtigste Ring der Automobilproduktionskette. Um unzĂ€hlige Produktionsziele zu erreichen, mĂŒssen zahlreiche Design- und Prozessparameter bewertet werden. Die Anzahl und Variation der Lösungen und Ziele sowie einige EinschrĂ€nkungen wie FertigungsbeschrĂ€nkungen, finanzielle Grenzen und Fristen beeinflussen die Auswahl einer guten Kombination von Variablen. In dieser Studie werden strukturelle Optimierungswerkzeuge fĂŒr aus Blech gefertigte Baugruppen, z. Karosserie, basierend auf Parametrisierung und Bewertung von Lösungen in CAD bzw. CAE. Diese Methodik konzentriert sich auf die Lösungen, die dazu fĂŒhren, dass die richtige Menge an leichtem / festem Material an der richtigen Stelle der Struktur verwendet wird, anstatt vollstĂ€ndig ersetzt zu werden. Eine adaptive Hybrid-Metaheuristik soll verhindern, dass alle Faktoren, die Bedrohungsoptimierungstools in einem lokalen Minimum konvergieren, anstelle eines globalen Optimums. Das Auffinden des globalen Optimums wird durch einige explorative und ausbeuterische Such Heuristiken gewĂ€hrleistet. Die ZuverlĂ€ssigkeit, Genauigkeit und Geschwindigkeit des vorgeschlagenen Algorithmus wird mit Ă€hnlichen Algorithmen in akademischen Optimierungsproblemen validiert und fĂŒhrt zu respektablen Ergebnissen. Da Strukturen möglicherweise einem weiten Bereich von LastfĂ€llen unterliegen, z. statische, zyklische, dynamische, Temperatur usw. Möglichkeit der multidisziplinĂ€ren Optimierung wurde in Optimierungswerkzeugen bereitgestellt.     Automated Improvement of Software Design by Search-Based Refactoring

    Le coĂ»t de maintenance du logiciel est estimĂ© Ă  plus de 70% du coĂ»t total du systĂšme, en raison de nombreux facteurs, y compris les besoins des nouveaux utilisateurs, l’adoption de nouvelles technologies et la qualitĂ© des systĂšmes logiciels. De ces facteurs, la qualitĂ© est celle que nous pouvons contrĂŽler et continuellement amĂ©liorer pour empĂȘcher la dĂ©gradation de la performance et la rĂ©duction de l’efficacitĂ© (par exemple, la dĂ©gradation de la conception du logiciel). De plus, pour rester compĂ©titive, l’industrie du logiciel a raccourci ses cycles de lancement afin de fournir de nouveaux produits et fonctionnalitĂ©s plus rapidement, ce qui entraĂźne une pression accrue sur les Ă©quipes de dĂ©veloppeurs et une accĂ©lĂ©ration de l’évolution de la conception du systĂšme. Une façon d’empĂȘcher la dĂ©gradation du logiciel est l’identification et la correction des anti-patrons qui sont des indicateurs de mauvaise qualitĂ© de conception. Pour amĂ©liorer la qualitĂ© de la conception et supprimer les anti-patrons, les dĂ©veloppeurs effectuent de petites transformations prĂ©servant le comportement (c.-Ă -d., refactoring). Le refactoring manuel est coĂ»teux, car il nĂ©cessite (1) d’identifier les entitĂ©s de code qui doivent ĂȘtre refactorisĂ©es ; (2) gĂ©nĂ©rer des opĂ©rations de refactoring pour les classes identifiĂ©es Ă  l’étape prĂ©cĂ©dente ; (3) trouver le bon ordre d’application des refactorings gĂ©nĂ©rĂ©s, pour maximiser le bĂ©nĂ©fice pour la qualitĂ© du code et minimiser les conflits. Ainsi, les chercheurs et les praticiens ont formulĂ© le refactoring comme un problĂšme d’optimisation et utilisent des techniques basĂ©es sur la recherche pour proposer des approches (semi) automatisĂ©es pour le rĂ©soudre. Dans cette thĂšse, je propose plusieurs mĂ©thodes pour rĂ©soudre les principaux problĂšmes des outils existants, afin d’aider les dĂ©veloppeurs dans leurs activitĂ©s de maintenance et d’assurance qualitĂ©. Ma thĂšse est qu’il est possible d’amĂ©liorer le refactoring automatisĂ© en considĂ©rant de nouvelles dimensions : (1) le contexte de tĂąche du dĂ©veloppeur pour prioriser le refactoring des classes pertinentes ; (2) l’effort du test pour rĂ©duire le coĂ»t des tests aprĂšs le refactoring ; (3) l’identification de conflit entre opĂ©rations de refactoring afin de rĂ©duire le coĂ»t de refactoring ; et (4) l’efficacitĂ© Ă©nergĂ©tique pour amĂ©liorer la consommation d’énergie des applications mobiles aprĂšs refactoring.----------ABSTRACT: Software maintenance cost is estimated to be more than 70% of the total cost of system, because of many factors, including new user’s requirements, the adoption of new technologies and the quality of software systems. From these factors, quality is the one that we can control and continually improved to prevent degradation of performance and reduction of effectiveness (a.k.a. design decay). Moreover, to stay competitive, the software industry has shortened its release cycles to deliver new products and features faster, which results in more pressure on developer teams and the acceleration of system’s design evolution. One way to prevent design decay is the identification and correction of anti-patterns which are indicators of poor design quality. To improve design quality and remove anti-patterns, developers perform small behavior-preserving transformations (a.k.a. refactoring). Manual refactoring is expensive, as it requires to (1) identify the code entities that need to be refactored; (2) generate refactoring operations for classes identified in the previous step; (3) find the correct order of application of the refactorings generated, to maximize the quality effect and to minimize conflicts. Hence, researchers and practitioners have formulated refactoring as an optimization problem and use search-based techniques to propose (semi)automated approaches to solve it. In this dissertation, we propose several approaches to tackle some of the major issues in existing refactoring tools, to assist developers in their maintenance and quality assurance activities

    An Approach Based on Particle Swarm Optimization for Inspection of Spacecraft Hulls by a Swarm of Miniaturized Robots

    The remoteness and hazards that are inherent to the operating environments of space infrastructures promote their need for automated robotic inspection. In particular, micrometeoroid and orbital debris impact and structural fatigue are common sources of damage to spacecraft hulls. Vibration sensing has been used to detect structural damage in spacecraft hulls as well as in structural health monitoring practices in industry by deploying static sensors. In this paper, we propose using a swarm of miniaturized vibration-sensing mobile robots realizing a network of mobile sensors. We present a distributed inspection algorithm based on the bio-inspired particle swarm optimization and evolutionary algorithm niching techniques to deliver the task of enumeration and localization of an a priori unknown number of vibration sources on a simplified 2.5D spacecraft surface. Our algorithm is deployed on a swarm of simulated cm-scale wheeled robots. These are guided in their inspection task by sensing vibrations arising from failure points on the surface which are detected by on-board accelerometers. We study three performance metrics: (1) proximity of the localized sources to the ground truth locations, (2) time to localize each source, and (3) time to finish the inspection task given a 75% inspection coverage threshold.     IoT and Sensor Networks in Industry and Society

    The exponential progress of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is one of the main elements that fueled the acceleration of the globalization pace. Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and big data analytics are some of the key players of the digital transformation that is affecting every aspect of human's daily life, from environmental monitoring to healthcare systems, from production processes to social interactions. In less than 20 years, people's everyday life has been revolutionized, and concepts such as Smart Home, Smart Grid and Smart City have become familiar also to non-technical users. The integration of embedded systems, ubiquitous Internet access, and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications have paved the way for paradigms such as IoT and Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) to be also introduced in high-requirement environments such as those related to industrial processes, under the forms of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT or I2oT) and Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS). As a consequence, in 2011 the German High-Tech Strategy 2020 Action Plan for Germany first envisioned the concept of Industry 4.0, which is rapidly reshaping traditional industrial processes. The term refers to the promise to be the fourth industrial revolution. Indeed, the ïŹrst industrial revolution was triggered by water and steam power. Electricity and assembly lines enabled mass production in the second industrial revolution. In the third industrial revolution, the introduction of control automation and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) gave a boost to factory production. As opposed to the previous revolutions, Industry 4.0 takes advantage of Internet access, M2M communications, and deep learning not only to improve production efficiency but also to enable the so-called mass customization, i.e. the mass production of personalized products by means of modularized product design and ïŹ‚exible processes. Less than five years later, in January 2016, the Japanese 5th Science and Technology Basic Plan took a further step by introducing the concept of Super Smart Society or Society 5.0. According to this vision, in the upcoming future, scientific and technological innovation will guide our society into the next social revolution after the hunter-gatherer, agrarian, industrial, and information eras, which respectively represented the previous social revolutions. Society 5.0 is a human-centered society that fosters the simultaneous achievement of economic, environmental and social objectives, to ensure a high quality of life to all citizens. This information-enabled revolution aims to tackle today’s major challenges such as an ageing population, social inequalities, depopulation and constraints related to energy and the environment. Accordingly, the citizens will be experiencing impressive transformations into every aspect of their daily lives. This book offers an insight into the key technologies that are going to shape the future of industry and society. It is subdivided into five parts: the I Part presents a horizontal view of the main enabling technologies, whereas the II-V Parts offer a vertical perspective on four different environments. The I Part, dedicated to IoT and Sensor Network architectures, encompasses three Chapters. In Chapter 1, Peruzzi and Pozzebon analyse the literature on the subject of energy harvesting solutions for IoT monitoring systems and architectures based on Low-Power Wireless Area Networks (LPWAN). The Chapter does not limit the discussion to Long Range Wise Area Network (LoRaWAN), SigFox and Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT) communication protocols, but it also includes other relevant solutions such as DASH7 and Long Term Evolution MAchine Type Communication (LTE-M). In Chapter 2, Hussein et al. discuss the development of an Internet of Things message protocol that supports multi-topic messaging. The Chapter further presents the implementation of a platform, which integrates the proposed communication protocol, based on Real Time Operating System. In Chapter 3, Li et al. investigate the heterogeneous task scheduling problem for data-intensive scenarios, to reduce the global task execution time, and consequently reducing data centers' energy consumption. The proposed approach aims to maximize the efficiency by comparing the cost between remote task execution and data migration. The II Part is dedicated to Industry 4.0, and includes two Chapters. In Chapter 4, Grecuccio et al. propose a solution to integrate IoT devices by leveraging a blockchain-enabled gateway based on Ethereum, so that they do not need to rely on centralized intermediaries and third-party services. As it is better explained in the paper, where the performance is evaluated in a food-chain traceability application, this solution is particularly beneficial in Industry 4.0 domains. Chapter 5, by De Fazio et al., addresses the issue of safety in workplaces by presenting a smart garment that integrates several low-power sensors to monitor environmental and biophysical parameters. This enables the detection of dangerous situations, so as to prevent or at least reduce the consequences of workers accidents. The III Part is made of two Chapters based on the topic of Smart Buildings. In Chapter 6, Petroșanu et al. review the literature about recent developments in the smart building sector, related to the use of supervised and unsupervised machine learning models of sensory data. The Chapter poses particular attention on enhanced sensing, energy efficiency, and optimal building management. In Chapter 7, Oh examines how much the education of prosumers about their energy consumption habits affects power consumption reduction and encourages energy conservation, sustainable living, and behavioral change, in residential environments. In this Chapter, energy consumption monitoring is made possible thanks to the use of smart plugs. Smart Transport is the subject of the IV Part, including three Chapters. In Chapter 8, Roveri et al. propose an approach that leverages the small world theory to control swarms of vehicles connected through Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication protocols. Indeed, considering a queue dominated by short-range car-following dynamics, the Chapter demonstrates that safety and security are increased by the introduction of a few selected random long-range communications. In Chapter 9, Nitti et al. present a real time system to observe and analyze public transport passengers' mobility by tracking them throughout their journey on public transport vehicles. The system is based on the detection of the active Wi-Fi interfaces, through the analysis of Wi-Fi probe requests. In Chapter 10, Miler et al. discuss the development of a tool for the analysis and comparison of efficiency indicated by the integrated IT systems in the operational activities undertaken by Road Transport Enterprises (RTEs). The authors of this Chapter further provide a holistic evaluation of efficiency of telematics systems in RTE operational management. The book ends with the two Chapters of the V Part on Smart Environmental Monitoring. In Chapter 11, He et al. propose a Sea Surface Temperature Prediction (SSTP) model based on time-series similarity measure, multiple pattern learning and parameter optimization. In this strategy, the optimal parameters are determined by means of an improved Particle Swarm Optimization method. In Chapter 12, Tsipis et al. present a low-cost, WSN-based IoT system that seamlessly embeds a three-layered cloud/fog computing architecture, suitable for facilitating smart agricultural applications, especially those related to wildfire monitoring.
