    Proactive kinodynamic planning using the extended social force model and human motion prediction in urban environments

    Trabajo presentado al IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2014), celebrado en Chicago, Illinois (US) del 14 al 18 de septiembre.This paper presents a novel approach for robot navigation in crowded urban environments where people and objects are moving simultaneously while a robot is navigating. Avoiding moving obstacles at their corresponding precise moment motivates the use of a robotic planner satisfying both dynamic and nonholonomic constraints, also referred as kynodynamic constraints. We present a proactive navigation approach with respect its environment, in the sense that the robot calculates the reaction produced by its actions and provides the minimum impact on nearby pedestrians. As a consequence, the proposed planner integrates seamlessly planning and prediction and calculates a complete motion prediction of the scene for each robot propagation. Making use of the Extended Social Force Model (ESFM) allows an enormous simplification for both the prediction model and the planning system under differential constraints.     Visual Attention in Dynamic Environments and its Application to Playing Online Games

    Abstract In this thesis we present a prototype of Cognitive Programs (CPs) - an executive controller built on top of Selective Tuning (ST) model of attention. CPs enable top-down control of visual system and interaction between the low-level vision and higher-level task demands. Abstract We implement a subset of CPs for playing online video games in real time using only visual input. Two commercial closed-source games - Canabalt and Robot Unicorn Attack - are used for evaluation. Their simple gameplay and minimal controls put the emphasis on reaction speed and attention over planning. Abstract Our implementation of Cognitive Programs plays both games at human expert level, which experimentally proves the validity of the concept. Additionally we resolved multiple theoretical and engineering issues, e.g. extending the CPs to dynamic environments, finding suitable data structures for describing the task and information flow within the network and determining the correct timing for each process

    The challenge of complexity for cognitive systems

    Complex cognition addresses research on (a) high-level cognitive processes – mainly problem solving, reasoning, and decision making – and their interaction with more basic processes such as perception, learning, motivation and emotion and (b) cognitive processes which take place in a complex, typically dynamic, environment. Our focus is on AI systems and cognitive models dealing with complexity and on psychological findings which can inspire or challenge cognitive systems research. In this overview we first motivate why we have to go beyond models for rather simple cognitive processes and reductionist experiments. Afterwards, we give a characterization of complexity from our perspective. We introduce the triad of cognitive science methods – analytical, empirical, and engineering methods – which in our opinion have all to be utilized to tackle complex cognition. Afterwards we highlight three aspects of complex cognition – complex problem solving, dynamic decision making, and learning of concepts, skills and strategies. We conclude with some reflections about and challenges for future research

    Search-based 3D Planning and Trajectory Optimization for Safe Micro Aerial Vehicle Flight Under Sensor Visibility Constraints

    Safe navigation of Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) requires not only obstacle-free flight paths according to a static environment map, but also the perception of and reaction to previously unknown and dynamic objects. This implies that the onboard sensors cover the current flight direction. Due to the limited payload of MAVs, full sensor coverage of the environment has to be traded off with flight time. Thus, often only a part of the environment is covered. We present a combined allocentric complete planning and trajectory optimization approach taking these sensor visibility constraints into account. The optimized trajectories yield flight paths within the apex angle of a Velodyne Puck Lite 3D laser scanner enabling low-level collision avoidance to perceive obstacles in the flight direction. Furthermore, the optimized trajectories take the flight dynamics into account and contain the velocities and accelerations along the path.
