    Get PDF

A Novel Stealthy Target Detection Based on Stratospheric Balloon-borne Positional Instability due to Random Wind

A novel detection for stealthy target model F-117A with a higher aspect vision is introduced by using Stratospheric Balloon-borne Bistatic system. The potential problem of proposed scheme is platform instability impacted on the balloon by external wind force. The flight control system is studied in detail under typical random process, which is defined by Dryden turbulence spectrum. To accurately detect the stealthy target model, a real Radar Cross Section (RCS) based on physical optics (PO) formulation is applied. The sensitivity of the proposed scheme has been improved due to increasing PO – scattering field of stealthy model with higher aspect angle comparing to the conventional ground -based system. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme gives much higher location accuracy and reduces location errors

Analysis and implementation of low fidelity radar-based remote sensing for unmanned aircraft systems

    Get PDF
Radar-based remote sensing is consistently growing, and new technologies and subsequent techniques for characterization are changing the feasibility of understanding the environment. The emergence of easily accessible unmanned aircraft system (UAS) has broadened the scope of possibilities for efficiently surveying the world. The continued development of low-cost sensing systems has greatly increased the accessibility to characterize physical phenomena. In this thesis, we explore the viability and implementation of using UAS as a means of radar-based remote sensing for ground penetrating radar (GPR) and polarimetric scatterometry. Additionally, in this thesis, we investigate the capabilities and implementations of low-cost microwave technologies for applications in radar-based remote sensing compared to higher fidelity and more expensive technologies of similar scope

US Army remotely piloted vehicle supporting technology program

Essential technology programs that lead to the full scale engineering development of the Aquila Remotely Piloted Vehicle system for U.S. Army are described. The Aquila system uses a small recoverable and reusable RPV to provide target acquisition, designation, and aerial reconnaissance mission support for artillery and smart munitions. Developments that will provide growth capabilities to the Aquila RPV system, as well as future RPV mission concepts being considered by the U.S. Army are presented

Investigation of advanced navigation and guidance system concepts for all-weather rotorcraft operations

Results are presented of a survey conducted of active helicopter operators to determine the extent to which they wish to operate in IMC conditions, the visibility limits under which they would operate, the revenue benefits to be gained, and the percent of aircraft cost they would pay for such increased capability. Candidate systems were examined for capability to meet the requirements of a mission model constructed to represent the modes of flight normally encountered in low visibility conditions. Recommendations are made for development of high resolution radar, simulation of the control display system for steep approaches, and for development of an obstacle sensing system for detecting wires. A cost feasibility analysis is included
