    Gait Analysis and Recognition for Automated Visual Surveillance

    Human motion analysis has received a great attention from researchers in the last decade due to its potential use in different applications such as automated visual surveillance. This field of research focuses on the perception and recognition of human activities, including people identification. We explore a new approach for walking pedestrian detection in an unconstrained outdoor environment. The proposed algorithm is based on gait motion as the rhythm of the footprint pattern of walking people is considered the stable and characteristic feature for the classification of moving objects. The novelty of our approach is motivated by the latest research for people identification using gait. The experimental results confirmed the robustness of our method to discriminate between single walking subject, groups of people and vehicles with a successful detection rate of 100%. Furthermore, the results revealed the potential of our method to extend visual surveillance systems to recognize walking people. Furthermore, we propose a new approach to extract human joints (vertex positions) using a model-based method. The spatial templates describing the human gait motion are produced via gait analysis performed on data collected from manual labeling. The Elliptic Fourier Descriptors are used to represent the motion models in a parametric form. The heel strike data is exploited to reduce the dimensionality of the parametric models. People walk normal to the viewing plane, as major gait information is available in a sagittal view. The ankle, knee and hip joints are successfully extracted with high accuracy for indoor and outdoor data. In this way, we have established a baseline analysis which can be deployed in recognition, marker-less analysis and other areas. The experimental results confirmed the robustness of the model-based approach to recognise walking subjects with a correct classification rate of 95% using purely the dynamic features derived from the joint motion. Therefore, this confirms the early psychological theories claiming that the discriminative features for motion perception and people recognition are embedded in gait kinematics. Furthermore, to quantify the intrusive nature of gait recognition we explore the effects of the different covariate factors on the performance of gait recognition. The covariate factors include footwear, clothing, carrying conditions and walking speed. As far as the author can determine, this is the first major study of its kind in this field to analyse the covariate factors using a model-based method

    The work of VRU-TOO is targeted specifically at the application of ATT for reducing risk and improving comfort (e.g. minimisation of delay) for Vulnerable Road Users, namely pedestrians. To achieve this, the project operates at three levels. At the European level practical pilot implementations in three countries (U.K., Portugal and Greece) are linked with behavioural studies of the micro-level interaction of pedestrians and vehicles and the development of computer simulation models. At the National level, the appropriate Highway Authorities are consulted, according to their functions, for the pilot implementations and informed of the results. Finally, at the local level, the pilot project work is fitted into specfic local (municipality) policy contexts in all three pilot project sites. The present report focuses on the Elefsina pilot application in Greece and the relevant National and Local policy contexts are the following. At the National level, the ultimate responsibility for road safety and signal installations rests with the Ministry of Environment and Public Works. The Ministry is responsible for the adoption of standards and solutions for problems and also for a large number of actual installations, since local authorities lack the size and expertise to undertake such work on their own One of the project's aims is to provide information to the Ministry as to the suitability of the methods developed for aiding pedestrian movement, ultimately leading to a specification for its wider use. The Ministry is expecting to use the final results of the present study for possible modifications of its present standards for pedestrian controlled traffic signals. At the local level (Elefsina) the municipality has, in the past, pursued environmental improvements through pedestrianisation schemes in the city centre. At the same time it has developed a special traffic management policy, to solve a particularly serious problem of through traffic. A summary of the policy is contained in Appendix A and more details in a previous deliverable (Tillis, 1992). In the particular case of Elefsina pedestrian induced delay to through vehicular traffic, may form a key element in this policy ensuring at the same time, an incentive to divert to the existing bypass and enhancing pedestrian movement. The effectiveness of pedestrian detection techniques tested in the pilot, will provide valuable information on the future implementation of the policy. Thus, the Elefsina Pilot Project operates at the same time on three levels: It provides a basis, in combination with the other two pilot project sites, for comparing the effects of pedestrian detection on pedestrian safety and comfort at a European level. It provides information to the National authorities (Ministry of Environment and Public Works) for their standards setting, scheme design and implementation tasks. It fits into a comprehensive plan at the local level for effecting environmental improvements and enhancing pedestrian amenity and comfort at the same time. In addition, an investigation into the capabilities of pedestrian detectors to function as data collection devices, was performed. The data 'quality gap' betweenvehicular and pedestrian tr&c may be closed with the utilisation of microwave pedestrian detectors, providing a more solid foundation for the planning for total person movement through networks (vehicle occupants, public transport passengers, pedestrians). This the second deliverable issued for Elefsina and comprises of the main section which contains a description of the work undertaken, the results and a number of appendices serving as background material in support of the statements in the main text

    Mapping, sensing and visualising the digital co-presence in the public arena

    This paper reports on work carried out within the Cityware project using mobile technologies to map, visualise and project the digital co-presence in the city. This paper focuses on two pilot studies exploring the Bluetooth landscape in the city of Bath. Here we apply adapted and ‘digitally augmented’ methods for spatial observation and analysis based on established methods used extensively in the space syntax approach to urban design. We map the physical and digital flows at a macro level and observe static space use at the micro level. In addition we look at social and mobile behaviour from an individual’s point of view. We apply a method based on intervention through ‘Sensing and projecting’ Bluetooth names and digital identity in the public arena. We present early findings in terms of patterns of Bluetooth flow and presence, and outline initial observations about how people’s reaction towards the projection of their Bluetooth names practices in public. In particular we note the importance of constructing socially meaningful relations between people mediated by these technologies. We discuss initial results and outline issues raised in detail before finally describing ongoing work

    Analysis and Simulation of Dynamic Vision in the City: A Computer-Aided Cinematic Approach

    This paper proposes a computer-aided Dynamic Visual Research and Design Protocol for environmental designers to analyze humans' dynamic visual experiences in the city and to simulate dynamic vision in the design process. The Protocol recommends using action cameras to collect massive dynamic visual data from participants' first-person perspectives. It prescribes a computer-aided visual analysis approach to produce cinematic charts and storyboards, which further afford qualitative interpretations for aesthetic assessment and discussion. Employing real-time 3D simulation technologies, the Protocol enables the simulation of people's dynamic vision in designed urban environments to support evaluation in design. Detailed contents and merits of the Protocol were demonstrated by its application in the Urbanscape Studio, a community participatory design course based at Watertown, South Dakota

    Soundscape visualization: a new approach based on automatic annotation and Samocharts

    International audienceThe visualization of sounds facilitates their identification and classification. However, in the case of audio recording websites, the access to a sound is usually based on the metadata of the sounds, i.e.sources and recording conditions. As sonic environments, or soundscapes, are mostly composed of multiples sources, their compact description is an issue that makes difficult the choice of an item in a sound corpus. The time-component matrix chart, which is abbreviated as TM-chart, has been proposed recently as a tool to describe and compare sonic environments. However their process of creation is based on a subjective annotation that makes their creation time-consuming. In this paper, we present a new method for urban soundscape corpus visualization. In the context of the CIESS project, we propose amochart: an extension of the TM-chart that is based on sound detection algorithms. We describe three original algorithms that allow the detection of alarms, footsteps, and motors. Samocharts can be computed from the results of these algorithms. This process is applied to a concrete case study: 20 urban recordings of 5 minutes each, from different situations (places and time). An application case shows that Samocharts allow an identification of different situations. Finally, the whole method provides a low-cost tool for soundscape visualization that can easily be applied to the management and use of a sound corpus
