    Real-Time Vehicle Parameter Estimation and Adaptive Stability Control

    This dissertation presents a novel Electronic Stability Control (ESC) strategy that is capable of adapting to changing vehicle mass, tire condition and road surface conditions. The benefits of ESC are well understood with regard to assisting drivers to maintain vehicle control during extreme handling maneuvers or when extreme road conditions such as ice are encountered. However state of the art ESC strategies rely on known and invariable vehicle parameters such as vehicle mass, yaw moment of inertia and tire cornering stiffness coefficients. Such vehicle parameters may change over time, especially in the case of heavy trucks which encounter widely varying load conditions. The objective of this research is to develop an ESC control strategy capable of identifying changes in these critical parameters and adapting the control strategy accordingly. An ESC strategy that is capable of identifying and adapting to changes in vehicle parameters is presented. The ESC system utilizes the same sensors and actuators used on commercially-available ESC systems. A nonlinear reduced-order observer is used to estimate vehicle sideslip and tire slip angles. In addition, lateral forces are estimated providing a real-time estimate of lateral force capability of the tires with respect to slip angle. A recursive least squares estimation algorithm is used to automatically identify tire cornering stiffness coefficients, which in turn provides a real-time indication of axle lateral force saturation and estimation of road/tire coefficient of friction. In addition, the recursive least squares estimation is shown to identify changes in yaw moment of inertia that may occur due to changes in vehicle loading conditions. An algorithm calculates the reduction in yaw moment due to axle saturation and determines an equivalent moment to be generated by differential braking on the opposite axle. A second algorithm uses the slip angle estimates and vehicle states to predict a Time to Saturation (TTS) value of the rear axle and takes appropriate action to prevent vehicle loss of control. Simulation results using a high fidelity vehicle modeled in CarSim show that the ESC strategy provides improved vehicle performance with regard to handling stability and is capable of adapting to the identified changes in vehicle parameters

    Nonlinear Adaptive Dynamic Inversion Control for Variable Stability Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems

    In-flight simulation and variable stability aircraft provide useful capabilities for flight controls development such as testing control laws for new aircraft earlier, identification of adverse conditions such as pilot-induced oscillations, and handling qualities research. While these capabilities are useful they are not without cost. The expense and support activities needed to safely operate in-flight simulators has limited their availability to military test pilot schools and a few private companies. Modern computing power allows the implementation of advanced flight control systems on size, weight, and power constrained platforms such as small uninhabited aerial systems used by universities and research organizations. This thesis aims to develop a flight control system that brings in-flight simulation capability to these platforms. Two control systems based on model reference and L₁ adaptive augmentation of baseline nonlinear dynamic inversion controllers are proposed and evaluated against a command augmentation system design and in-flight simulation cases for a variety of linear and nonlinear models. Simulation results demonstrate that both proposed control architectures are able to meet the control objectives for tracking and in-flight simulation and performance and stability robustness in the presence of severe turbulence

    Autonomous landing of fixed-wing aircraft on mobile platforms

    E n esta tesis se propone un nuevo sistema que permite la operación de aeronaves autónomas sin tren de aterrizaje. El trabajo está motivado por el interés industrial en aeronaves con la capacidad de volar a gran altitud, con más capacidad de carga útil y capaces de aterrizar con viento cruzado. El enfoque seguido en este trabajo consiste en eliminar el sistema de aterrizaje de una aeronave de ala fija empleando una plataforma móvil de aterrizaje en tierra. La aeronave y la plataforma deben sincronizar su movimiento antes del aterrizaje, lo que se logra mediante la estimación del estado relativo entre ambas y el control cooperativo del movimiento. El objetivo principal de esta Tesis es el desarrollo de una solución práctica para el aterrizaje autónomo de una aeronave de ala fija en una plataforma móvil. En la tesis se combinan nuevos métodos con experimentos prácticos para los cuales se ha desarrollado un sistema de pruebas específico. Se desarrollan dos variantes diferentes del sistema de aterrizaje. El primero presta atención especial a la seguridad, es robusto ante retrasos en la comunicación entre vehículos y cumple procedimientos habituales de aterrizaje, al tiempo que reduce la complejidad del sistema. En el segundo se utilizan trayectorias optimizadas del vehículo y sincronización bilateral de posición para maximizar el rendimiento del aterrizaje en términos de requerimientos de longitud necesaria de pista, pero la estabilidad es dependiente del retraso de tiempo, con lo cual es necesario desarrollar un controlador estabilizador ampliado, basado en pasividad, que permite resolver este problema. Ambas estrategias imponen requisitos funcionales a los controladores de cada uno de los vehículos, lo que implica la capacidad de controlar el movimiento longitudinal sin afectar el control lateral o vertical, y viceversa. El control de vuelo basado en energía se utiliza para proporcionar dicha funcionalidad a la aeronave. Los sistemas de aterrizaje desarrollados se han analizado en simulación estableciéndose los límites de rendimiento mediante múltiples repeticiones aleatorias. Se llegó a la conclusión de que el controlador basado en seguridad proporciona un rendimiento de aterrizaje satisfactorio al tiempo que suministra una mayor seguridad operativa y un menor esfuerzo de implementación y certificación. El controlador basado en el rendimiento es prometedor para aplicaciones con una longitud de pista limitada. Se descubrió que los beneficios del controlador basado en el rendimiento son menos pronunciados para una dinámica de vehículos terrestres más lenta. Teniendo en cuenta la dinámica lenta de la configuración del demostrador, se eligió el enfoque basado en la seguridad para los primeros experimentos de aterrizaje. El sistema de aterrizaje se validó en diversas pruebas de aterrizaje exitosas, que, a juicio del autor, son las primeras en el mundo realizadas con aeronaves reales. En última instancia, el concepto propuesto ofrece importantes beneficios y constituye una estrategia prometedora para futuras soluciones de aterrizaje de aeronaves.In this thesis a new landing system is proposed, which allows for the operation of autonomous aircraft without landing gear. The work was motivated by the industrial need for more capable high altitude aircraft systems, which typically suffer from low payload capacity and high crosswind landing sensitivity. The approach followed in this work consists in removing the landing gear system from the aircraft and introducing a mobile ground-based landing platform. The vehicles must synchronize their motion prior to landing, which is achieved through relative state estimation and cooperative motion control. The development of a practical solution for the autonomous landing of an aircraft on a moving platform thus constitutes the main goal of this thesis. Therefore, theoretical investigations are combined with real experiments for which a special setup is developed and implemented. Two different landing system variants are developed — the safety-based landing system is robust to inter-vehicle communication delays and adheres to established landing procedures, while reducing system complexity. The performance-based landing system uses optimized vehicle trajectories and bilateral position synchronization to maximize landing performance in terms of used runway, but suffers from time delay-dependent stability. An extended passivity-based stabilizing controller was implemented to cope with this issue. Both strategies impose functional requirements on the individual vehicle controllers, which imply independent controllability of the translational degrees of freedom. Energy-based flight control is utilized to provide such functionality for the aircraft. The developed landing systems are analyzed in simulation and performance bounds are determined by means of repeated random sampling. The safety-based controller was found to provide satisfactory landing performance while providing higher operational safety, and lower implementation and certification effort. The performance-based controller is promising for applications with limited runway length. The performance benefits were found to be less pronounced for slower ground vehicle dynamics. Given the slow dynamics of the demonstrator setup, the safety-based approach was chosen for first landing experiments. The landing system was validated in a number of successful landing trials, which to the author’s best knowledge was the first time such technology was demonstrated on the given scale, worldwide. Ultimately, the proposed concept offers decisive benefits and constitutes a promising strategy for future aircraft landing solutions

    Actuators for Intelligent Electric Vehicles

    This book details the advanced actuators for IEVs and the control algorithm design. In the actuator design, the configuration four-wheel independent drive/steering electric vehicles is reviewed. An in-wheel two-speed AMT with selectable one-way clutch is designed for IEV. Considering uncertainties, the optimization design for the planetary gear train of IEV is conducted. An electric power steering system is designed for IEV. In addition, advanced control algorithms are proposed in favour of active safety improvement. A supervision mechanism is applied to the segment drift control of autonomous driving. Double super-resolution network is used to design the intelligent driving algorithm. Torque distribution control technology and four-wheel steering technology are utilized for path tracking and adaptive cruise control. To advance the control accuracy, advanced estimation algorithms are studied in this book. The tyre-road peak friction coefficient under full slip rate range is identified based on the normalized tyre model. The pressure of the electro-hydraulic brake system is estimated based on signal fusion. Besides, a multi-semantic driver behaviour recognition model of autonomous vehicles is designed using confidence fusion mechanism. Moreover, a mono-vision based lateral localization system of low-cost autonomous vehicles is proposed with deep learning curb detection. To sum up, the discussed advanced actuators, control and estimation algorithms are beneficial to the active safety improvement of IEVs

    An Omnidirectional Aerial Platform for Multi-Robot Manipulation

    The objectives of this work were the modeling, control and prototyping of a new fully-actuated aerial platform. Commonly, the multirotor aerial platforms are under-actuated vehicles, since the total propellers thrust can not be directed in every direction without inferring a vehicle body rotation. The most common fully-actuated aerial platforms have tilted or tilting rotors that amplify the aerodynamic perturbations between the propellers, reducing the efficiency and the provided thrust. In order to overcome this limitation a novel platform, the ODQuad (OmniDirectional Quadrotor), has been proposed, which is composed by three main parts, the platform, the mobile and rotor frames, that are linked by means of two rotational joints, namely the roll and pitch joints. The ODQuad is able to orient the total thrust by moving only the propellers frame by means of the roll and pitch joints. Kinematic and dynamic models of the proposed multirotor have been derived using the Euler- Lagrange approach and a model-based controller has been designed. The latter is based on two control loops: an outer loop for vehicle position control and an inner one for vehicle orientation and roll-pitch joint control. The effectiveness of the controller has been tested by means of numerical simulations in the MATLAB c SimMechanics environment. In particular, tests in free motion and in object transportation tasks have been carried out. In the transportation task simulation, a momentum based observer is used to estimate the wrenches exchanged between the vehicle and the transported object. The ODQuad concept has been tested also in cooperative manipulation tasks. To this aim, a simulation model was considered, in which multiple ODQuads perform the manipulation of a bulky object with unknown inertial parameters which are identified in the first phase of the simulation. In order to reduce the mechanical stresses due to the manipulation and enhance the system robustness to the environment interactions, two admittance filters have been implemented: an external filter on the object motion and an internal one local for each multirotor. Finally, the prototyping process has been illustrated step by step. In particular, three CAD models have been designed. The ODQuad.01 has been used in the simulations and in a preliminary static analysis that investigated the torque values for a rough sizing of the roll-pitch joint actuators. Since in the ODQuad.01 the components specifications and the related manufacturing techniques have not been taken into account, a successive model, the ODQuad.02, has been designed. The ODQuad.02 design can be developed with aluminum or carbon fiber profiles and 3D printed parts, but each component must be custom manufactured. Finally, in order to shorten the prototype development time, the ODQuad.03 has been created, which includes some components of the off-the-shelf quadrotor Holybro X500 into a novel custom-built mechanical frame

    Advanced Sensing and Control for Connected and Automated Vehicles

    Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are a transformative technology that is expected to change and improve the safety and efficiency of mobility. As the main functional components of CAVs, advanced sensing technologies and control algorithms, which gather environmental information, process data, and control vehicle motion, are of great importance. The development of novel sensing technologies for CAVs has become a hotspot in recent years. Thanks to improved sensing technologies, CAVs are able to interpret sensory information to further detect obstacles, localize their positions, navigate themselves, and interact with other surrounding vehicles in the dynamic environment. Furthermore, leveraging computer vision and other sensing methods, in-cabin humans’ body activities, facial emotions, and even mental states can also be recognized. Therefore, the aim of this Special Issue has been to gather contributions that illustrate the interest in the sensing and control of CAVs

    Development of Waterloo Robotic Rollator (WATRR)

    One of the major risk factors for impaired mobility is aging, and with the aging population on the rise, the demand for assistive technologies for individuals with mobility impairment is at an all time high. Impaired mobility can lead to loss of independence, increased chance of mortality, deterioration of health, decreased cognitive function and a poor quality of life. Moreover, individuals with impaired mobility also tend to have higher hospital utilization costs. Mobility capability can be (re)built through the use of assistive technologies. Rollators/Walkers are a commonly used mobility aid that has shown to help with mobility by providing support, particularly transferring a portion of the lower limb loads to the upper limbs. However, safety has been a concern with rollators, with thousands of accidents occurring every year. Currently, many research projects are investigating methods to improve rollators, particularly surrounding the use of robotic rollators. At University of Waterloo Neural and Rehabilitation lab (NRE lab), our goal is to develop technology to improve lives of people, with development of robotic rollators being one of our research foci. The Waterloo Robotic Rollators (WATRR) is an active rollator system with built-in sensing and actuation systems. It is believed that the user experience and safety of rollators can be improved through the use of smart control algorithms. The purpose of this thesis was to develop methods to address safety and user experience concerns by proposing a hybrid control approach, where distance and orientation control are key control parameters, including automatic braking. First, the Waterloo Robotic Rollator (WATRR), a low weight robotic rollator platform, representative of current rollators with sensors and actuators is presented. I describe key design decisions for the platform, offer an overview of the software architecture, and discuss further research development goals. The proposed hybrid controller is then described and both simulation and experimental data for controller design is presented. To enable the envisioned hybrid control systems, a human state estimator and a robot state estimator are required. The human state estimator uses computer vision and machine learning in a hourglass network structure to predict shoulder locations. Using the estimated location and depth data, human velocity, distance and orientation relative to the rollator are estimated. For the robot state estimator, a new velocity estimator based on learning methods is proposed. As rollator lateral velocity can be difficult to estimate with traditional methods, we propose an augmented learning-aided state estimator. This estimator is a Long- Short-Term Memory (LSTM) based estimator, augmented with an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF). The proposed estimator was validated through experimental data. The main contribution of this thesis was a new lightweight rollator system with sensors and actuators that enabled development of advanced controls. Next, previous control systems are not only improved upon by using a new hybrid controller but also implemented on our platform. A new robot state estimator is developed that relies solely on the kinematics and is able to estimate lateral velocity with a mean error of <10mm/s<10mm/s without requiring additional instrumentation or knowledge of the rollator's time varying parameters. Finally, a new human state estimator is designed which does not require instrumentation on the human and outperforms current estimators
