Biometrics in Cyber Security
Computers play an important role in our daily lives and its usage has grown manifolds today. With ever increasing demand of security regulations all over the world and large number of services provided using the internet in day to day life, the assurance of security associated with such services has become a crucial issue. Biometrics is a key to the future of data/cyber security. This paper presents a biometric recognition system which can be embedded in any system involving access control, e-commerce, online banking, computer login etc. to enhance the security. Fingerprint is an old and mature technology which has been used in this work as biometric trait. In this paper a fingerprint recognition system based on no minutiae features: Fuzzy features and Invariant moment features has been developed. Fingerprint images from FVC2002 are used for experimentation. The images are enhanced for improving the quality and a region of interest (ROI) is cropped around the core point. Two sets of features are extracted from ROI and support vector machine (SVM) is used for verification. An accuracy of 95 per cent is achieved with the invariant moment features using RBF kernel in SVM
Fingerprint recognition system using hybrid matching techniques
With an increasing emphasis on the emerging automatic person identification application, biometrics based, especially fingerprint-based identification, is receiving a lot of attention. This research developed an automatic fingerprint recognition system (AFRS) based on a hybrid between minutiae and correlation based techniques to represent and to match fingerprint; it improved each technique individually. It was noticed that, in the hybrid approach, as a result of an improvement of minutiae extraction algorithm in post-process phase that combines the two algorithms, the performance of the minutia algorithm improved. An improvement in the ridge algorithm that used centre point in fingerprint instead of reference point was also observed. Experiments indicate that the hybrid technique performs much better than each algorithm individually. <br /
Fingerprint verification by fusion of optical and capacitive sensors
A few works have been presented so far on information fusion for fingerprint verification. None, however, have explicitly investigated the use of multi-sensor fusion, in other words, the integration of the information provided by multiple devices to capture fingerprint images. In this paper, a multi-sensor fingerprint verification system based on the fusion of optical and capacitive sensors is presented. Reported results show that such a multi-sensor system can perform better than traditional fingerprint matchers based on a single sensor. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Likelihood-Ratio-Based Biometric Verification
The paper presents results on optimal similarity measures for biometric verification based on fixed-length feature vectors. First, we show that the verification of a single user is equivalent to the detection problem, which implies that, for single-user verification, the likelihood ratio is optimal. Second, we show that, under some general conditions, decisions based on posterior probabilities and likelihood ratios are equivalent and result in the same receiver operating curve. However, in a multi-user situation, these two methods lead to different average error rates. As a third result, we prove theoretically that, for multi-user verification, the use of the likelihood ratio is optimal in terms of average error rates. The superiority of this method is illustrated by experiments in fingerprint verification. It is shown that error rates below 10/sup -3/ can be achieved when using multiple fingerprints for template construction
Autoencoding the Retrieval Relevance of Medical Images
Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) of medical images is a crucial task that
can contribute to a more reliable diagnosis if applied to big data. Recent
advances in feature extraction and classification have enormously improved CBIR
results for digital images. However, considering the increasing accessibility
of big data in medical imaging, we are still in need of reducing both memory
requirements and computational expenses of image retrieval systems. This work
proposes to exclude the features of image blocks that exhibit a low encoding
error when learned by a autoencoder (). We examine the
histogram of autoendcoding errors of image blocks for each image class to
facilitate the decision which image regions, or roughly what percentage of an
image perhaps, shall be declared relevant for the retrieval task. This leads to
reduction of feature dimensionality and speeds up the retrieval process. To
validate the proposed scheme, we employ local binary patterns (LBP) and support
vector machines (SVM) which are both well-established approaches in CBIR
research community. As well, we use IRMA dataset with 14,410 x-ray images as
test data. The results show that the dimensionality of annotated feature
vectors can be reduced by up to 50% resulting in speedups greater than 27% at
expense of less than 1% decrease in the accuracy of retrieval when validating
the precision and recall of the top 20 hits.Comment: To appear in proceedings of The 5th International Conference on Image

DeepMasterPrints: Generating MasterPrints for Dictionary Attacks via Latent Variable Evolution
Recent research has demonstrated the vulnerability of fingerprint recognition
systems to dictionary attacks based on MasterPrints. MasterPrints are real or
synthetic fingerprints that can fortuitously match with a large number of
fingerprints thereby undermining the security afforded by fingerprint systems.
Previous work by Roy et al. generated synthetic MasterPrints at the
feature-level. In this work we generate complete image-level MasterPrints known
as DeepMasterPrints, whose attack accuracy is found to be much superior than
that of previous methods. The proposed method, referred to as Latent Variable
Evolution, is based on training a Generative Adversarial Network on a set of
real fingerprint images. Stochastic search in the form of the Covariance Matrix
Adaptation Evolution Strategy is then used to search for latent input variables
to the generator network that can maximize the number of impostor matches as
assessed by a fingerprint recognizer. Experiments convey the efficacy of the
proposed method in generating DeepMasterPrints. The underlying method is likely
to have broad applications in fingerprint security as well as fingerprint
synthesis.Comment: 8 pages; added new verification systems and diagrams. Accepted to

Incorporating image quality in multi-algorithm fingerprint verification
The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/11608288_29Proceedings of International Conference, ICB 2006, Hong Kong (China)The effect of image quality on the performance of fingerprint verification is studied. In particular, we investigate the performance of two fingerprint matchers based on minutiae and ridge information as well as their score-level combination under varying fingerprint image quality. The ridge-based system is found to be more robust to image quality degradation than the minutiae-based system. We exploit this fact by introducing an adaptive score fusion scheme based on automatic quality estimation in the spatial frequency domain. The proposed scheme leads to enhanced performance over a wide range of fingerprint image quality. This work has been supported by Spanish MCYT TIC2003-08382-C05-01 and by European Commission IST-2002-507634 Biosecure NoE projects
