    Improved Heuristics for the Early/Tardy Scheduling Problem with No Idle Time

    In this paper we consider the single machine earliness/tardiness scheduling problem with no idle time. We present two new heuristics, a dispatch rule and a greedy procedure, and also consider the best of the existing dispatch rules. Both dispatch rules use a lookahead parameter that had previously been set at a fixed value. We develop functions that map some instance statistics into appropriate values for that parameter. We also consider the use of dominance rules to improve the solutions obtained by the heuristics. The computational results show that the function-based versions of the heuristics outperform their fixed value counterparts and that the use of the dominance rules can indeed improve solution quality with little additional computational effort.scheduling, early/tardy, heuristics, dispatch rules, dominance rules

    Iterated-greedy-based algorithms with beam search initialization for the permutation flowshop to minimize total tardiness

    The permutation flow shop scheduling problem is one of the most studied operations research related problems. Literally, hundreds of exact and approximate algorithms have been proposed to optimise several objective functions. In this paper we address the total tardiness criterion, which is aimed towards the satisfaction of customers in a make-to-order scenario. Although several approximate algorithms have been proposed for this problem in the literature, recent contributions for related problems suggest that there is room for improving the current available algorithms. Thus, our contribution is twofold: First, we propose a fast beam-search-based constructive heuristic that estimates the quality of partial sequences without a complete evaluation of their objective function. Second, using this constructive heuristic as initial solution, eight variations of an iterated-greedy-based algorithm are proposed.     Models and Strategies for Variants of the Job Shop Scheduling Problem

    Recently, a variety of constraint programming and Boolean satisfiability approaches to scheduling problems have been introduced. They have in common the use of relatively simple propagation mechanisms and an adaptive way to focus on the most constrained part of the problem. In some cases, these methods compare favorably to more classical constraint programming methods relying on propagation algorithms for global unary or cumulative resource constraints and dedicated search heuristics. In particular, we described an approach that combines restarting, with a generic adaptive heuristic and solution guided branching on a simple model based on a decomposition of disjunctive constraints. In this paper, we introduce an adaptation of this technique for an important subclass of job shop scheduling problems (JSPs), where the objective function involves minimization of earliness/tardiness costs. We further show that our technique can be improved by adding domain specific information for one variant of the JSP (involving time lag constraints).     New efficient constructive heuristics for the hybrid flowshop to minimise makespan: A computational evaluation of heuristics

    This paper addresses the hybrid flow shop scheduling problem to minimise makespan, a well-known scheduling problem for which many constructive heuristics have been proposed in the literature. Nevertheless, the state of the art is not clear due to partial or non homogeneous comparisons. In this paper, we review these heuristics and perform a comprehensive computational evaluation to determine which are the most efficient ones. A total of 20 heuristics are implemented and compared in this study. In addition, we propose four new heuristics for the problem. Firstly, two memory-based constructive heuristics are proposed, where a sequence is constructed by inserting jobs one by one in a partial sequence. The most promising insertions tested are kept in a list. However, in contrast to the Tabu search, these insertions are repeated in future iterations instead of forbidding them. Secondly, we propose two constructive heuristics based on Johnson’s algorithm for the permutation flowshop scheduling problem. We analyse the performance of several dispatch rules, a greedy procedure and a decision theory local search heuristic. The dispatch rules use a lookahead parameter whose value must be specified. We perform some experiments to determine an appropriate value for this parameter. The use of dominance rules to improve the solutions obtained by these heuristics is also considered. The computational results show that the use of the dominance rules can indeed improve the solution quality with little additional computational e?ort.     Approximate Algorithms for the Combined arrival-Departure Aircraft Sequencing and Reactive Scheduling Problems on Multiple Runways

    The problem addressed in this dissertation is the Aircraft Sequencing Problem (ASP) in which a schedule must be developed to determine the assignment of each aircraft to a runway, the appropriate sequence of aircraft on each runway, and their departing or landing times. The dissertation examines the ASP over multiple runways, under mixed mode operations with the objective of minimizing the total weighted tardiness of aircraft landings and departures simultaneously. To prevent the dangers associated with wake-vortex effects, separation times enforced by Aviation Administrations (e.g., FAA) are considered, adding another level of complexity given that such times are sequence-dependent. Due to the problem being NP-hard, it is computationally difficult to solve large scale instances in a reasonable amount of time. Therefore, three greedy algorithms, namely the Adapted Apparent Tardiness Cost with Separation and Ready Times (AATCSR), the Earliest Ready Time (ERT) and the Fast Priority Index (FPI) are proposed. Moreover, metaheuristics including Simulated Annealing (SA) and the Metaheuristic for Randomized Priority Search (Meta-RaPS) are introduced to improve solutions initially constructed by the proposed greedy algorithms. The performance (solution quality and computational time) of the various algorithms is compared to the optimal solutions and to each other. The dissertation also addresses the Aircraft Reactive Scheduling Problem (ARSP) as air traffic systems frequently encounter various disruptions due to unexpected events such as inclement weather, aircraft failures or personnel shortages rendering the initial plan suboptimal or even obsolete in some cases. This research considers disruptions including the arrival of new aircraft, flight cancellations and aircraft delays. ARSP is formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem in which both the schedule\u27s quality and stability are of interest. The objectives consist of the total weighted start times (solution quality), total weighted start time deviation, and total weighted runway deviation (instability measures). Repair and complete regeneration approximate algorithms are developed for each type of disruptive events. The algorithms are tested against difficult benchmark problems and the solutions are compared to optimal solutions in terms of solution quality, schedule stability and computational time

    Order acceptance and scheduling in a single-machine environment: exact and heuristic algorithms.

    In this paper, we develop exact and heuristic algorithms for the order acceptance and scheduling problem in a single-machine environment. We consider the case where a pool consisting of firm planned orders as well as potential orders is available from which an over-demanded company can select. The capacity available for processing the accepted orders is limited and orders are characterized by known processing times, delivery dates, revenues and the weight representing a penalty per unit-time delay beyond the delivery date promised to the customer. We prove the non-approximability of the problem and give two linear formulations that we solve with CPLEX. We devise two exact branch-and-bound procedures able to solve problem instances of practical dimensions. For the solution of large instances, we propose six heuristics.     NEH-based heuristics for the permutation flowshop scheduling problem to minimize total tardiness

    Since Johnson׳s seminal paper in 1954, scheduling jobs in a permutation flowshop has been receiving the attention of hundreds of practitioners and researchers, being one of the most studied topics in the Operations Research literature. Among the different objectives that can be considered, minimising the total tardiness (i.e. the sum of the surplus of the completion time of each job over its due date) is regarded as a key objective for manufacturing companies, as it entails the fulfilment of the due dates committed to customers. Since this problem is known to be NP-hard, most research has focused on proposing approximate procedures to solve it in reasonable computation times. Particularly, several constructive heuristics have been proposed, with NEHedd being the most efficient one, serving also to provide an initial solution for more elaborate approximate procedures. In this paper, we first analyse in detail the decision problem depending on the generation of the due dates of the jobs, and discuss the similarities with different related decision problems. In addition, for the most characteristic tardiness scenario, the analysis shows that a huge number of ties appear during the construction of the solutions done by the NEHedd heuristic, and that wisely breaking the ties greatly influences the quality of the final solution. Since no tie-breaking mechanism has been designed for this heuristic up to now, we propose several mechanisms that are exhaustively tested.
