On-line Handwritten Character Recognition: An Implementation of Counterpropagation Neural Net

On-line handwritten scripts are usually dealt with pen tip traces from pen-down to pen-up positions. Time evaluation of the pen coordinates is also considered along with trajectory information. However, the data obtained needs a lot of preprocessing including filtering, smoothing, slant removing and size normalization before recognition process. Instead of doing such lengthy preprocessing, this paper presents a simple approach to extract the useful character information. This work evaluates the use of the counter- propagation neural network (CPN) and presents feature extraction mechanism in full detail to work with on-line handwriting recognition. The obtained recognition rates were 60% to 94% using the CPN for different sets of character samples. This paper also describes a performance study in which a recognition mechanism with multiple hresholds is evaluated for counter-propagation architecture. The results indicate that the application of multiple thresholds has significant effect on recognition mechanism. The method is applicable for off-line character recognition as well. The technique is tested for upper-case English alphabets for a number of different styles from different peoples

In this paper, a new method for offline handwriting recognition is presented. A robust algorithm for handwriting segmentation has been described here with the help of which individual characters can be segmented from a word selected from a paragraph of handwritten text image which is given as input to the module. Then each of the segmented characters are converted into column vectors of 625 values that are later fed into the advanced neural network setup that has been designed in the form of text files. The networks has been designed with quadruple layered neural network with 625 input and 26 output neurons each corresponding to a character from a-z, the outputs of all the four networks is fed into the genetic algorithm which has been developed using the concepts of correlation, with the help of this the overall network is optimized with the help of genetic algorithm thus providing us with recognized outputs with great efficiency of 71%

Cursive Handwriting Segmentation using Ideal Distance Approach

Offline cursive handwriting becomes a major challenge due to the huge amount of handwriting varieties such as slant handwriting, space between words, the size and direction of the letter, the style of writing the letter and handwriting with contour similarity on some letters. There are some steps for recursive handwriting recognition. The steps are preprocessing, morphology, segmentation, features of letter extraction and recognition. Segmentation is a crucial process in handwriting recognition since the success of segmentation step will determine the success level of recognition. This paper proposes a segmentation algorithm that segment recursive handwriting into letters. These letters will form words using a method that determine the intersection cutting point of image recursive handwriting with an ideal image distance. The ideal distance of recursive handwriting image is an ideal distance segmentation point in order to avoid the cutting of other letter’s section. The width and height of images are used to determine the accurate segmentation point. There were 999 recursive handwriting input images taken from 25 researchers used for this study. The images used are the images obtained from preprocessing step. Those are the images with slope correction. This study used Support Vector Machine (SVM) to recognize recursive handwriting. The experiments show the proposed segmentation algorithm able to segment the image precisely and have 97% success recognizing the recursive handwriting

Recognition techniques for online Arabic handwriting recognition systems

Online recognition of Arabic handwritten text has been an on-going research problem for many years. Generally, online text recognition field has been gaining more interest lately due to the increasing popularity of hand-held computers, digital notebooks and advanced cellular phones. However, different techniques have been used to build several online handwritten recognition systems for Arabic text, such as Neural Networks, Hidden Markov Model, Template Matching and others. Most of the researches on online text recognition have divided the recognition system into these three main phases which are preprocessing phase, feature extraction phase and recognition phase which considers as the most important phase and the heart of the whole system. This paper presents and compares techniques that have been used to recognize the Arabic handwriting scripts in online recognition systems. Those techniques attempt to recognize Arabic handwritten words, characters, digits or strokes. The structure and strategy of those reviewed techniques are explained in this article. The strengths and weaknesses of using these techniques will also be discussed

In this paper, an attempt is made to develop off-line recognition strategies for the isolated Handwritten English character(A to Z) and (0 to 9). Challenges in handwritten character recognition wholly lie in the variation and distortion of handwritten characters, since different people may use different style of handwritten, and direction to draw the same shape of the characters of their known script. The paper provides a review on the process of character recognition using neural network. Character recognition methods are listed under two main headlines. The Offline methods use the static images properties. The Offline methods are further divided into four methods, which are clustering, Feature Extraction, Pattern Matching and Artificial Neural Network. The Online methods are subdivided into k-NN classifier and direction based algorithm. Character preprocessing is used binarization, thresolding and segmentation method. Neural network based method improves the character recognition. The proposed method is based on the feed forward back propogation method to classify the characters. The ANN is trained using the Back Propogation algorithm. In the proposed system, English nue-merical letter is represented by binary numbers that are assume as input and fed to an ANN. Neural network followed by Back Propagation Algorithm which compromises Training
