Some Implications of Chu\u27s 10ψ10 Generalization of Bailey\u27s 6ψ6 Summation Formula

Lucy Slater used Bailey\u27s 6ψ6 summation formula to derive the Bailey pairs she used to construct her famous list of 130 identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type. In the present paper we apply the same techniques to Chu\u27s 10ψ10 generalization of Bailey\u27s formula to produce quite general Bailey pairs. Slater\u27s Bailey pairs are then recovered as special limiting cases of these more general pairs. In re-examining Slater\u27s work, we find that her Bailey pairs are, for the most part, special cases of more general Bailey pairs containing one or more free parameters. Further, we also find new general Bailey pairs (containing one or more free parameters) which are also implied by the 6ψ6 summation formula. Slater used the Jacobi triple product identity (sometimes coupled with the quintuple product identity) to derive her infinite products. Here we also use other summation formulae (including special cases of the 6ψ6 summation formula and Jackson\u27s 6Ø5 summation formula) to derive some of our infinite products. We use the new Bailey pairs, and/or the summation methods mentioned above, to give new proofs of some general series-product identities due to Ramanujan, Andrews and others. We also derive a new general series-product identity, one which may be regarded as a partner to one of the Ramanujan identities. We also find new transformation formulae between basic hypergeometric series, new identities of Rogers-Ramanujan type, and new false theta series identities. Some of these latter are a kind of hybrid in that one side of the identity consists a basic hypergeometric series, while the other side is formed from a theta product multiplied by a false theta series. This type of identity appears to be new

Constructing conceptualizations of English academic writing within an EFL context: streams of influence at a Taiwan university

    Get PDF
The thesis draws upon in-depth research into the question of how English Academic Writing (EAW) is conceptualized at a Department of Applied English in a Taiwanese university. A qualitative research approach was taken within a social constructionism framework. Administrators, teachers, and students, were interviewed to explore the impact each of these three streams of influence has on the construction of the idea of EAW within this particular EFL context. These influences add to the mixture forming the conceptualization of EAW with a knock on effect to curriculum planning, teaching pedagogy, and the academic texts students produce. Administrators' design of a writing program and teachers' conceptualizations of EAW have implications for students' experience in learning to write and their own conceptualizations of what EAW is. Excerpts from interviews with teachers across the writing programme reveal how teachers do not share a coherent approach to teaching writing and yet have the understanding that they are conforming to a standardized conception of EAW. This research has important implications for curriculum design and lesson planning in EAW and EFL teacher training. Administrators need to implement a writing program with clear mutual goals as conceptualizations of EAW in an EFL context may be particularly fragile and lack consistency. Further implications of this research touch upon the training EFL teachers receive in graduate programs abroad which contribute to molding their conceptualizations of EAW. This research also points to the importance for administrators, teachers, and students to share a common language with which to discuss EAW issues

Intercultural discourse: a study of language and culture in Chinese-American narrative writing

This thesis examines the relationship between language and culture in narrative writing by focusing on a specific group of texts: published narratives written in English by Chinese American authors. These narratives tend to focus on the minority experience and the use of English to depict the ethnic culture magnifies the intricacies of cultural representation. The intimate relationship between language and culture in these texts is underscored by the fact that language is repeatedly singled out as a primary marker of cultural difference. The concept of intercultural communication provides a useful platform from which to study the interconnections between language and culture in narrative writing. Although the concept is mainly applied to spoken discourse, it highlights a number of important aspects of the narratives in this study. Analysis of the texts reveals that intercultural communication is not only a common feature in the narrative worlds as characters from different cultural groups interact but that the texts also become sites of intercultural discourse by foregrounding those characteristics that make them culturally distinctive. The role of language in these texts is closely related to the way they communicate as intercultural narratives. Thus, this research examines how language is used to establish cultural identity and signify cultural difference. It also describes the various ways in which language is stylistically exploited to express ethnicity. In analyzing the relationship between language and culture in these narratives, an approach combining the resources of both stylistics and sociolinguistics is adopted. The cultural significance of discourse patterns and language representation in the narratives can only be fully appreciated with the aid of sociolinguistic knowledge

Chinese Female Gaze: The Evolution of Gender Cognition in China through Ancient Mythology and Contemporary Films

    Get PDF
The Chinese woman has seen various decades of depiction. The empowerment of the Chinese woman can be traced through the ancient goddesses, who were seen as powerful, just and reverent. The same can be seen through female characters in contemporary films, who are seen as able and an equal figure to the masculine gender. However, due to centuries of patriarchal oppression in China, the power of women remains suppressed. This study was conducted to explore the connection between the empowerment of women represented by ancient goddesses like Nü Wa and Chang'e, and contemporary female characters depicted in today's cinema, particularly in the films, Raise the Red Lantern and Rouge. The juxtaposition of ancient goddesses with contemporary female characters in films fosters a compelling atmosphere and conclusion, underscoring the significance of Chinese women across different eras. The conclusion forms a rather strong case for the fact that the Chinese woman has been a very crucial part of the community; the inputs they have in the society are very critical in shaping how the entire world perceives the Chinese woman.
