    Boundary Spanner Corruption in Business Relationships

    Boundary spanner corruption—voluntary collaborative behaviour between individuals representing different organisations that violates their organisations’ norms—is a serious problem in business relationships. Drawing on insights from the literatures on general corruption perspectives, the dark side of business relationships and deviance in sales and service organisations, this dissertation identifies boundary spanner corruption as a potential dark side complication inherent in close business relationships It builds research questions from these literature streams and proposes a research structure based upon commonly used methods in corruption research to address this new concept. In the first study, using an exploratory survey of boundary spanner practitioners, the dissertation finds that the nature of boundary spanner corruption is broad and encompasses severe and non-severe types. The survey also finds that these deviance types are prevalent in a widespread of geographies and industries. This prevalence is particularly noticeable for less-severe corruption types, which may be an under-researched phenomenon in general corruption research. The consequences of boundary spanner corruption can be serious for both individuals and organisations. Indeed, even less-severe types can generate long-term negative consequences. A second interview-based study found that multi-level trust factors could also motivate the emergence of boundary spanner corruption. This was integrated into a theoretical model that illustrates how trust at the interpersonal, intraorganisational, and interorganisational levels enables corrupt behaviours by allowing deviance-inducing factors stemming from the task environment or from the individual boundary spanner to manifest in boundary spanner corruption. Interpersonal trust between representatives of different organisations, interorganisational trust between these organisations, and intraorganisational agency trust of management in their representatives foster the development of a boundary-spanning social cocoon—a mechanism that can inculcate deviant norms leading to corrupt behaviour. This conceptualisation and model of boundary spanner corruption highlights intriguing directions for future research to support practitioners engaged in a difficult problem in business relationships

    An empirical investigation of the relationship between integration, dynamic capabilities and performance in supply chains

    This research aimed to develop an empirical understanding of the relationships between integration, dynamic capabilities and performance in the supply chain domain, based on which, two conceptual frameworks were constructed to advance the field. The core motivation for the research was that, at the stage of writing the thesis, the combined relationship between the three concepts had not yet been examined, although their interrelationships have been studied individually. To achieve this aim, deductive and inductive reasoning logics were utilised to guide the qualitative study, which was undertaken via multiple case studies to investigate lines of enquiry that would address the research questions formulated. This is consistent with the author’s philosophical adoption of the ontology of relativism and the epistemology of constructionism, which was considered appropriate to address the research questions. Empirical data and evidence were collected, and various triangulation techniques were employed to ensure their credibility. Some key features of grounded theory coding techniques were drawn upon for data coding and analysis, generating two levels of findings. These revealed that whilst integration and dynamic capabilities were crucial in improving performance, the performance also informed the former. This reflects a cyclical and iterative approach rather than one purely based on linearity. Adopting a holistic approach towards the relationship was key in producing complementary strategies that can deliver sustainable supply chain performance. The research makes theoretical, methodological and practical contributions to the field of supply chain management. The theoretical contribution includes the development of two emerging conceptual frameworks at the micro and macro levels. The former provides greater specificity, as it allows meta-analytic evaluation of the three concepts and their dimensions, providing a detailed insight into their correlations. The latter gives a holistic view of their relationships and how they are connected, reflecting a middle-range theory that bridges theory and practice. The methodological contribution lies in presenting models that address gaps associated with the inconsistent use of terminologies in philosophical assumptions, and lack of rigor in deploying case study research methods. In terms of its practical contribution, this research offers insights that practitioners could adopt to enhance their performance. They can do so without necessarily having to forgo certain desired outcomes using targeted integrative strategies and drawing on their dynamic capabilities

    Meso-scale FDM material layout design strategies under manufacturability constraints and fracture conditions

    In the manufacturability-driven design (MDD) perspective, manufacturability of the product or system is the most important of the design requirements. In addition to being able to ensure that complex designs (e.g., topology optimization) are manufacturable with a given process or process family, MDD also helps mechanical designers to take advantage of unique process-material effects generated during manufacturing. One of the most recognizable examples of this comes from the scanning-type family of additive manufacturing (AM) processes; the most notable and familiar member of this family is the fused deposition modeling (FDM) or fused filament fabrication (FFF) process. This process works by selectively depositing uniform, approximately isotropic beads or elements of molten thermoplastic material (typically structural engineering plastics) in a series of pre-specified traces to build each layer of the part. There are many interesting 2-D and 3-D mechanical design problems that can be explored by designing the layout of these elements. The resulting structured, hierarchical material (which is both manufacturable and customized layer-by-layer within the limits of the process and material) can be defined as a manufacturing process-driven structured material (MPDSM). This dissertation explores several practical methods for designing these element layouts for 2-D and 3-D meso-scale mechanical problems, focusing ultimately on design-for-fracture. Three different fracture conditions are explored: (1) cases where a crack must be prevented or stopped, (2) cases where the crack must be encouraged or accelerated, and (3) cases where cracks must grow in a simple pre-determined pattern. Several new design tools, including a mapping method for the FDM manufacturability constraints, three major literature reviews, the collection, organization, and analysis of several large (qualitative and quantitative) multi-scale datasets on the fracture behavior of FDM-processed materials, some new experimental equipment, and the refinement of a fast and simple g-code generator based on commercially-available software, were developed and refined to support the design of MPDSMs under fracture conditions. The refined design method and rules were experimentally validated using a series of case studies (involving both design and physical testing of the designs) at the end of the dissertation. Finally, a simple design guide for practicing engineers who are not experts in advanced solid mechanics nor process-tailored materials was developed from the results of this project.U of I OnlyAuthor's request

    Improving inter-unit collaboration during the project sales phase

    This thesis, conducted as a case study is aimed at studying the collaboration between three functional units of a supplier project-based management firm. In particular, the main purpose of the case study is to study how the sales unit, sourcing unit and project unit of the firm share information, especially during the sales phase. Therefore, this study explores what collaboration between the sales, project and sourcing units means. Furthermore, this research also explores what are the information generated and shared during the sales phase, and what benefits are achieved when the units collaborate. This thesis highlights the importance of information to units during the project management phase. Furthermore, this thesis shows how important it is to handle information appropriately and ensure information quality. Through literature analysis, the author introduces existing concepts and collects data through questionnaires and interviews for analysis. An assessment of the existing practice functions and processes of the units was also done. After this, the content analysis methodology was used to analyze the data collected. It was found that in the supplier project-based case company, a lot of information generated during the sales phases of every project is critical and useful during the sales phase and after the completion of the sales phase. Also, gathering information is an important part of the project during the sales phase because it helps to understand the project requirements and propose a competitive offer to the customer. In addition, the information enables other units to make proper plans to support effective project execution. Therefore, another important finding was the need to share the information early enough with other stakeholders, and through the right medium that supports the easy access of the information. Based on the case company under study, it was found that the sales, project, and sourcing units of the firm all benefit when they share information with one another. This study tackled an important area of a supplier project-based firm, however, the data gathered and analyzed was only from one case company. Hence, this study can be used as a starting point or guide for similar research in other case companies. Furthermore, the findings of this study may be used by academic institutions, professionals in the field of project management, and organizations

    Die Qualitätskontrolle konzentriert sich auf die Erkennung von Produktfehlern und die Überwachung von Aktivitäten, um zu überprüfen, ob die Produkte den gewünschten Qualitätsstandard erfüllen. Viele Ansätze für die Qualitätskontrolle verwenden spezialisierte Bildverarbeitungssoftware, die auf manuell entwickelten Merkmalen basiert, die von Fachleuten entwickelt wurden, um Objekte zu erkennen und Bilder zu analysieren. Diese Modelle sind jedoch mühsam, kostspielig in der Entwicklung und schwer zu pflegen, während die erstellte Lösung oft spröde ist und für leicht unterschiedliche Anwendungsfälle erhebliche Anpassungen erfordert. Aus diesen Gründen wird die Qualitätskontrolle in der Industrie immer noch häufig manuell durchgeführt, was zeitaufwändig und fehleranfällig ist. Daher schlagen wir einen allgemeineren datengesteuerten Ansatz vor, der auf den jüngsten Fortschritten in der Computer-Vision-Technologie basiert und Faltungsneuronale Netze verwendet, um repräsentative Merkmale direkt aus den Daten zu lernen. Während herkömmliche Methoden handgefertigte Merkmale verwenden, um einzelne Objekte zu erkennen, lernen Deep-Learning-Ansätze verallgemeinerbare Merkmale direkt aus den Trainingsproben, um verschiedene Objekte zu erkennen. In dieser Dissertation werden Modelle und Techniken für die automatisierte Erkennung von Defekten in lichtmikroskopischen Bildern von materialografisch präparierten Schnitten entwickelt. Wir entwickeln Modelle zur Defekterkennung, die sich grob in überwachte und unüberwachte Deep-Learning-Techniken einteilen lassen. Insbesondere werden verschiedene überwachte Deep-Learning-Modelle zur Erkennung von Defekten in der Mikrostruktur von Lithium-Ionen-Batterien entwickelt, von binären Klassifizierungsmodellen, die auf einem Sliding-Window-Ansatz mit begrenzten Trainingsdaten basieren, bis hin zu komplexen Defekterkennungs- und Lokalisierungsmodellen, die auf ein- und zweistufigen Detektoren basieren. Unser endgültiges Modell kann mehrere Klassen von Defekten in großen Mikroskopiebildern mit hoher Genauigkeit und nahezu in Echtzeit erkennen und lokalisieren. Das erfolgreiche Trainieren von überwachten Deep-Learning-Modellen erfordert jedoch in der Regel eine ausreichend große Menge an markierten Trainingsbeispielen, die oft nicht ohne weiteres verfügbar sind und deren Beschaffung sehr kostspielig sein kann. Daher schlagen wir zwei Ansätze vor, die auf unbeaufsichtigtem Deep Learning zur Erkennung von Anomalien in der Mikrostruktur von gesinterten NdFeB-Magneten basieren, ohne dass markierte Trainingsdaten benötigt werden. Die Modelle sind in der Lage, Defekte zu erkennen, indem sie aus den Trainingsdaten indikative Merkmale von nur "normalen" Mikrostrukturmustern lernen. Wir zeigen experimentelle Ergebnisse der vorgeschlagenen Fehlererkennungssysteme, indem wir eine Qualitätsbewertung an kommerziellen Proben von Lithium-Ionen-Batterien und gesinterten NdFeB-Magneten durchführen
