PREDICTIVE DIAGNOSIS IN AXIAL PISTON PUMPS A STUDY FOR HIGH FREQUENCY CONDITION INDICATORS UNDER VARIABLE OPERATING CONDITIONS

Increasing reliability, availability and safety requirements as well as an increasing amount of data acquisition systems have enabled condition-based maintenance in mobile and industrial machinery. In this paper, we present a methodology to develop a robust diagnostic approach. This includes the consideration of variable operating conditions in the data acquisition process as well as a versatile, non domain-specific feature extraction technique. By doing so, we train anomaly detection models for different fault types and different fault intensities in variable displacement axial piston pumps. Our specific interest points to the investigation of high-frequency condition indicators with a sampling rate of 1 MHz. Furthermore, we compare those to industry standard sensors, sampled with up to 20 kHz. By considering variable operating conditions, we are able to quantify the influence of the operating point. The results show, that high-frequency features are a suitable condition-indicator across several operating points and can be used to detect faults more easily. Although set up on a test-bench, the experimental design allows to draw conclusions about realistic field operational conditions

Fault detection in operating helicopter drive train components based on support vector data description

The objective of the paper is to develop a vibration-based automated procedure dealing with early detection of mechanical degradation of helicopter drive train components using Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS) data. An anomaly-detection method devoted to the quantification of the degree of deviation of the mechanical state of a component from its nominal condition is developed. This method is based on an Anomaly Score (AS) formed by a combination of a set of statistical features correlated with specific damages, also known as Condition Indicators (CI), thus the operational variability is implicitly included in the model through the CI correlation. The problem of fault detection is then recast as a one-class classification problem in the space spanned by a set of CI, with the aim of a global differentiation between normal and anomalous observations, respectively related to healthy and supposedly faulty components. In this paper, a procedure based on an efficient one-class classification method that does not require any assumption on the data distribution, is used. The core of such an approach is the Support Vector Data Description (SVDD), that allows an efficient data description without the need of a significant amount of statistical data. Several analyses have been carried out in order to validate the proposed procedure, using flight vibration data collected from a H135, formerly known as EC135, servicing helicopter, for which micro-pitting damage on a gear was detected by HUMS and assessed through visual inspection. The capability of the proposed approach of providing better trade-off between false alarm rates and missed detection rates with respect to individual CI and to the AS obtained assuming jointly-Gaussian-distributed CI has been also analysed

Crack detection using nonlinear output frequency response functions - an experimental study

    Get PDF
The new concept of Nonlinear Output Frequency Response Functions (NOFRFs) is introduced in this paper to detect cracks in beams using frequency domain information. The results show that the NOFRFs are a sensitive indicator of the presence of cracks providing the excitation is of an appropriate strength. The new results provide a novel and effective method for the detection of cracks in beams, with applications in structural fault diagnosis

Diagnosis of a unit-wide disturbance caused by saturation in a manipulated variable

It is well known that faulty control valves with friction in the moving parts lead to limit cycle oscillations which can propagate to other parts of the plant. However, a control loop with healthy valve can also undergo oscillatory behavior. The root cause of a unit-wide oscillation in a distillation column was traced to a pressure control loop in a case study at Mitsui Chemicals. The diagnosis was made by means of a new technique of pattern matching of the time-resolved frequency spectrum using a wavelet analysis tool. The method identified key characteristics shared by measurements at various places in the column and quantified the similarities. Non-linearity was detected in the time trend of the pressure measurement, a result which initially suggested the root cause was a faulty actuator or sensor. Further analysis showed, however, that the source of non-linearlity was periodic saturation of the manipulated variable caused by slack tuning. The problem was remidied by changing the controller tuning settings and the unit-wide disturbance then went away
