Real-time Emotional State Detection from Facial Expression on Embedded Devices
From the last decade, researches on human facial
emotion recognition disclosed that computing models built on
regression modelling can produce applicable performance.
However, many systems need extensive computing power to be
run that prevents its wide applications such as robots and smart
devices. In this proposed system, a real-time automatic facial
expression system was designed, implemented and tested on an
embedded device such as FPGA that can be a first step for a
specific facial expression recognition chip for a social robot. The
system was built and simulated in MATLAB and then was built
on FPGA and it can carry out real time continuously emotional
state recognition at 30 fps with 47.44% accuracy. The proposed
graphic user interface is able to display the participant video and
two dimensional predict labels of the emotion in real time

Time-delay neural network for continuous emotional dimension prediction from facial expression sequences

One of the main challenges is modeling the dynamics that characterize naturalistic expressions. In this paper, a novel two-stage automatic system is proposed to continuously predict affective dimension values from facial expression videos. In the first stage, traditional regression methods are used to classify each individual video frame, while in the second stage, a Time-Delay Neural Network (TDNN) is proposed to model the temporal relationships between
consecutive predictions. The two-stage approach separates the emotional state dynamics modeling from an individual emotional state prediction step based on input features. In doing so, the temporal information used by the TDNN is not biased by the high variability between features of consecutive frames and allows the network to more easily exploit the slow changing dynamics between emotional states. The system was fully tested and evaluated on three different facial expression video datasets. Our experimental results demonstrate that the use of a two-stage approach combined with the TDNN to take into account previously classified frames significantly improves the overall performance of continuous emotional state estimation in naturalistic
facial expressions. The proposed approach has won the affect recognition sub-challenge of the third international Audio/Visual Emotion Recognition Challenge (AVEC2013)1
Chronic-Pain Protective Behavior Detection with Deep Learning
In chronic pain rehabilitation, physiotherapists adapt physical activity to
patients' performance based on their expression of protective behavior,
gradually exposing them to feared but harmless and essential everyday
activities. As rehabilitation moves outside the clinic, technology should
automatically detect such behavior to provide similar support. Previous works
have shown the feasibility of automatic protective behavior detection (PBD)
within a specific activity. In this paper, we investigate the use of deep
learning for PBD across activity types, using wearable motion capture and
surface electromyography data collected from healthy participants and people
with chronic pain. We approach the problem by continuously detecting protective
behavior within an activity rather than estimating its overall presence. The
best performance reaches mean F1 score of 0.82 with leave-one-subject-out cross
validation. When protective behavior is modelled per activity type, performance
is mean F1 score of 0.77 for bend-down, 0.81 for one-leg-stand, 0.72 for
sit-to-stand, 0.83 for stand-to-sit, and 0.67 for reach-forward. This
performance reaches excellent level of agreement with the average experts'
rating performance suggesting potential for personalized chronic pain
management at home. We analyze various parameters characterizing our approach
to understand how the results could generalize to other PBD datasets and

Automatic emotional state detection and analysis on embedded devices
This thesis was submitted for the award of Master of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonFrom the last decade, studies on human facial emotion recognition revealed that computing models based on regression modelling can produce applicable performance. In this study, an automatic facial expression real-time system was built and tested. The method is used in this study has been used widely in different areas such as Local Binary Pattern method, which has been used in many research projects in machine vision, and the K-Nearest Neighbour algorithm is method utilized for regression modelling. In this study, these two techniques has been used and implemented on the FPGA for the first time, on the side and joined together to great the model in such way to display a continues and automatic emotional state detection model on the monitor. To evaluate the effectiveness of the classifier technique for human emotion recognition from video, the model was designed and tested on MATLAB environment and then MATLAB Simulink environment that is capable of recognizing continuous facial expression in real time with a rate of 1 frame per second and implemented on a desktop PC. It has been evaluated in a testing dataset and the experimental results were promising with the accuracy of 51.28%. The datasets and labels used in this study are made from videos which, recorded twice from 5 participants while watching a video. In order to implement it in real-time in faster frame rate, the facial expression recognition system was built on FPGA. The model was built on Atlysâ„¢ Spartan-6 FPGA Development Board. It can perform continuously emotional state recognition in real time at a frame rate of 30 with the accuracy of 47.44%. A graphic user interface was designed to display the participant video in real time and also two dimensional predict labels of the emotion at the same time. This is the first time that automatic emotional state detection has been successfully implemented on FPGA by using LBP and K-NN techniques in such way to display a continues and automatic emotional state detection model on the monitor
Enhanced Face Recognition Method Performance on Android vs Windows Platform
Android is becoming one of the most popular operating systems on smartphones, tablet computers and similar
mobile devices. With the quick development in mobile device specifications, it is worthy to think about mobile devices as current or - at least - near future replacement of personal computers. This paper presents an enhanced face recognition method. The method is tested on two different platforms using Windows and Android operating systems. This is done to evaluate the method and to compare the platforms. The platforms are compared according to two factors: development simplicity and performance. The target is evaluating the possibility of replacing personal computers using Windows operating system by mobile devices using Android operating system. Face recognition has been chosen because of the relatively high computing cost of image processing and pattern recognition applications comparing with other applications. The experiment results show acceptable performance of the method on Android platform
