    Hospital-wide therapist scheduling and routing: exact and heuristic methods

    In this paper, we address the problem of scheduling and routing physical therapists hospital-wide. At the beginning of a day, therapy jobs are known to a hospital's physical therapy scheduler who decides for each therapy job when, where and by which therapist a job is performed. If a therapist is assigned to a sequence which contains two consecutive jobs that must take place in different treatment rooms, then transfer times must be considered. We propose three approaches to solve the problem. First, an Integer Program (IP) simultaneously schedules therapies and routes therapists. Second, a cutting plane algorithm iteratively solves the therapy scheduling problem without routing constraints and adds cuts to exclude schedules which have no feasible routes. Since hospitals are interested in obtaining quick solutions, we also propose a heuristic algorithm, which schedules therapies sequentially by simultaneously checking routing and resource constraints. Using real-world data from a hospital, we compare the performance of the three approaches. Our computational analysis reveals that our IP formulation fails to solve test, which have more than~30 jobs, to optimality in an acceptable solution time. In contrast, the cutting plane algorithm can solve instances with more than 100 jobs optimally. The heuristic approach obtains good solutions for large real-world instances within fractions of a second

    Scheduling is a common task that plays a crucial role in many industries such as manufacturing or servicing. In a competitive environment, effective scheduling is one of the key factors to reduce cost and increase productivity. Therefore, scheduling problems have been studied by many researchers over the past thirty years. Rehearsal scheduling problem (RSP) is similar to the popular resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP); however, it does not have activity precedence constraints and the resources’ availabilities are not fixed during processing time. RSP can be used to schedule rehearsal in theatre industry or to schedule group scheduling when each member has different sets of available time. In this report, three different approaches are proposed to solve RSP including Constraint Programming, Integer Programming, and Schedule Generation Schemes

It is very important in assembly line and batch production . The most important drawback of existing methods used to solve the sequencing problems is the sequence must has a few products and dependent completion time for single demand . In this paper we used genetic algorithm –based Travelling Salesman Problem with Precedence Constraints Approach ( TSPPCA)  to minimize completion time .     An Integer Programming Approach to Optimal Basic Block Instruction Scheduling for Single-Issue Processors

    We present a novel integer programming formulation for basic block instruction scheduling on single-issue processors. The problem can be considered as a very general sequential task scheduling problem with delayed precedence-constraints. Our model is based on the linear ordering problem and has, in contrast to the last IP model proposed, numbers of variables and constraints that are strongly polynomial in the instance size. Combined with improved preprocessing techniques and given a time limit of ten minutes of CPU and system time, our branch-and-cut implementation is capable to solve all but eleven of the 369,861 basic blocks of the SPEC 2000 integer and floating point benchmarks to proven optimality. This is competitive to the current state-of-the art constraint programming approach that has also been evaluated on this test suite

    Applications of simulation and optimization techniques in optimizing room and pillar mining systems

    The goal of this research was to apply simulation and optimization techniques in solving mine design and production sequencing problems in room and pillar mines (R&P). The specific objectives were to: (1) apply Discrete Event Simulation (DES) to determine the optimal width of coal R&P panels under specific mining conditions; (2) investigate if the shuttle car fleet size used to mine a particular panel width is optimal in different segments of the panel; (3) test the hypothesis that binary integer linear programming (BILP) can be used to account for mining risk in R&P long range mine production sequencing; and (4) test the hypothesis that heuristic pre-processing can be used to increase the computational efficiency of branch and cut solutions to the BILP problem of R&P mine sequencing. A DES model of an existing R&P mine was built, that is capable of evaluating the effect of variable panel width on the unit cost and productivity of the mining system. For the system and operating conditions evaluated, the result showed that a 17-entry panel is optimal. The result also showed that, for the 17-entry panel studied, four shuttle cars per continuous miner is optimal for 80% of the defined mining segments with three shuttle cars optimal for the other 20%. The research successfully incorporated risk management into the R&P production sequencing problem, modeling the problem as BILP with block aggregation to minimize computational complexity. Three pre-processing algorithms based on generating problem-specific cutting planes were developed and used to investigate whether heuristic pre-processing can increase computational efficiency. Although, in some instances, the implemented pre-processing algorithms improved computational efficiency, the overall computational times were higher due to the high cost of generating the cutting planes --Abstract, page iii

    Mathematical Modelling for Load Balancing and Minimization of Coordination Losses in Multirobot Stations

    The automotive industry is moving from mass production towards an individualized production, in order to improve product quality and reduce costs and material waste. This thesis concerns aspects of load balancing of industrial robots in the automotive manufacturing industry, considering efficient algorithms required by an individualized production. The goal of the load balancing problem is to improve the equipment utilization. Several approaches for solving the load balancing problem are presented along with details on mathematical tools and subroutines employed.Our contributions to the solution of the load balancing problem are manifold. First, to circumvent robot coordination we have constructed disjoint robot programs, which require no coordination schemes, are more flexible, admit competitive cycle times for some industrial instances, and may be preferred in an individualized production. Second, since solving the task assignment problem for generating the disjoint robot programs was found to be unreasonably time-consuming, we modelled it as a generalized unrelated parallel machine problem with set packing constraints and suggested a tighter model formulation, which was proven to be much more tractable for a branch--and--cut solver. Third, within continuous collision detection it needs to be determined whether the sweeps of multiple moving robots are disjoint. Our solution uses the maximum velocity of each robot along with distance computations at certain robot configurations to derive a function that provides lower bounds on the minimum distance between the sweeps. The lower bounding function is iteratively minimized and updated with new distance information; our method is substantially faster than previously developed methods
