    A high-order language for a system of closely coupled processing elements

    The research reported in this paper was occasioned by the requirements on part of the Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) project under way at NASA Lewis Research Center. The RTDS simulation scheme employs a network of CPUs running lock-step cycles in the parallel computations of jet airplane simulations. Their need for a high order language (HOL) that would allow non-experts to write simulation applications and that could be implemented on a possibly varying network can best be fulfilled by using the programming language Ada. We describe how the simulation problems can be modeled in Ada, how to map a single, multi-processing Ada program into code for individual processors, regardless of network reconfiguration, and why some Ada language features are particulary well-suited to network simulations

    Mystro is a system that facilities the construction of compilers, assemblers, code generators, query interpretors, and similar programs. It provides features to encourage the use of iterative enhancement. Mystro was developed in response to the needs of NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) and enjoys a number of advantages over similar systems. There are other programs available that can be used in building translators. These typically build parser tables, usually supply the source of a parser and parts of a lexical analyzer, but provide little or no aid for code generation. In general, only the front end of the compiler is addressed. Mystro, on the other hand, emphasizes tools for both ends of a compiler

    This thesis traces the development of a full-screen syntax-directed editor - a type of editor that operates on a program in terms of its syntactic tree structure instead of its sequential character representation. The editor is table-driven, reading as input an extended BNF syntax of the target language. It can therefore be used for any language whose syntax can be defined in EBNF. Print formatting information can be included with the syntactic definition to enable programs to be pretty-printed when they are displayed. The user is presented with a pretty-printed skeletal outline of a program with the currently selected construct highlighted and all required syntactic items provided by the editor. Any constructs with alternatives, such as "", which occurs in many languages, are initially denoted by a placeholder in the form of a non-terminal name (i.e. "") which is expanded when the user indicates which alternative is wanted. All symbols entered by the user are parsed immediately and any erroneous symbols rejected, making it impossible to create a syntactically incorrect program. The editor cannot detect semantic errors as no semantic information is available from the EBNF syntax. However the first use of all identifiers is flagged by the editor as an aid to the detection of undeclared identifiers. A "help" area at the bottom of the screen continuously displays a list of the correct next symbols and the syntactic definition of the currently selected program construct. This display, together with a multi-level "undo" command and the provision of a skeletal program by the editor, provides a way of exploring the various constructs in a programming language, while ensuring the syntactic correctness of the resultant program

    Simulation of mixed bond graphs and block diagrams on personal computers using TUTSIM

    The TUTSIM simulation program for continuous dynamic systems accepts (nonlinear) block diagrams, bond graphs or a free mix of both. The simulation is “hands on” interactive, providing a direct contact with the model. The implementation of the program on existing personal computers (Apple II, IBM PC) requires small memory size and has a high computational speed, due to its assembler source code. A slower FORTRAN CP/M version is available. It is shown how bond graphs can be used as an input language. An example using bond graphs as a modelling tool is presented

    Metamorphic Code Generation from LLVM IR Bytecode

    Metamorphic software changes its internal structure across generations with its functionality remaining unchanged. Metamorphism has been employed by malware writers as a means of evading signature detection and other advanced detection strate- gies. However, code morphing also has potential security benefits, since it increases the “genetic diversity” of software. In this research, we have created a metamorphic code generator within the LLVM compiler framework. LLVM is a three-phase compiler that supports multiple source languages and target architectures. It uses a common intermediate representation (IR) bytecode in its optimizer. Consequently, any supported high-level programming language can be transformed to this IR bytecode as part of the LLVM compila- tion process. Our metamorphic generator functions at the IR bytecode level, which provides many advantages over previously developed metamorphic generators. The morphing techniques that we employ include dead code insertion—where the dead code is actually executed within the morphed code—and subroutine permutation. We have tested the effectiveness of our code morphing using hidden Markov model analysis

    The RANDOM Computer Program is a FORTRAN program for generating random number sequences and testing linear congruential random number generators (LCGs). The linear congruential form of random number generator is discussed, and the selection of parameters of an LCG for a microcomputer described. This document describes the following: (1) The RANDOM Computer Program; (2) RANDOM.MOD, the computer code needed to implement an LCG in a FORTRAN program; and (3) The RANCYCLE and the ARITH Computer Programs that provide computational assistance in the selection of parameters for an LCG. The RANDOM, RANCYCLE, and ARITH Computer Programs are written in Microsoft FORTRAN for the IBM PC microcomputer and its compatibles. With only minor modifications, the RANDOM Computer Program and its LCG can be run on most micromputers or mainframe computers
