    THE BEES’ ALGORITHM FOR DESIGN OPTIMIZATION OF A GRIPPER MECHANISM

    In this paper, a gripper mechanism is optimized by using bees’ algorithm (BA) to compare with Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm version II (NSGA-II). The procedure of BA is proposed. The superiority of BA is illustrated by using results in figures and tables. A sensitivity analysis using correlation test is executed. The effectiveness coefficients of design variable for the objectives are provided. Consequently, the effectual design variables and the genuine searching method of BA are clearly evaluated and discussed. The BA provides dispersed and the least crowded Pareto Front population for solution in the shortest duration. Therefore, the best solutions are selected based on curve fitting. The closest solutions to the fitted curve are selected as the best in the region

    Data-Driven Grasp Synthesis - A Survey

    We review the work on data-driven grasp synthesis and the methodologies for sampling and ranking candidate grasps. We divide the approaches into three groups based on whether they synthesize grasps for known, familiar or unknown objects. This structure allows us to identify common object representations and perceptual processes that facilitate the employed data-driven grasp synthesis technique. In the case of known objects, we concentrate on the approaches that are based on object recognition and pose estimation. In the case of familiar objects, the techniques use some form of a similarity matching to a set of previously encountered objects. Finally for the approaches dealing with unknown objects, the core part is the extraction of specific features that are indicative of good grasps. Our survey provides an overview of the different methodologies and discusses open problems in the area of robot grasping.     Virtual reality for assembly methods prototyping: a review

    Assembly planning and evaluation is an important component of the product design process in which details about how parts of a new product will be put together are formalized. A well designed assembly process should take into account various factors such as optimum assembly time and sequence, tooling and fixture requirements, ergonomics, operator safety, and accessibility, among others. Existing computer-based tools to support virtual assembly either concentrate solely on representation of the geometry of parts and fixtures and evaluation of clearances and tolerances or use simulated human mannequins to approximate human interaction in the assembly process. Virtual reality technology has the potential to support integration of natural human motions into the computer aided assembly planning environment (Ritchie et al. in Proc I MECH E Part B J Eng 213(5):461–474, 1999). This would allow evaluations of an assembler’s ability to manipulate and assemble parts and result in reduced time and cost for product design. This paper provides a review of the research in virtual assembly and categorizes the different approaches. Finally, critical requirements and directions for future research are presented

    This book book is a collection of 18 chapters written by internationally recognized experts and well-known professionals of the field. Chapters contribute to diverse facets of contemporary robotics and autonomous systems. The volume is organized in four thematic parts according to the main subjects, regarding the recent advances in the contemporary robotics. The first thematic topics of the book are devoted to the theoretical issues. This includes development of algorithms for automatic trajectory generation using redudancy resolution scheme, intelligent algorithms for robotic grasping, modelling approach for reactive mode handling of flexible manufacturing and design of an advanced controller for robot manipulators. The second part of the book deals with different aspects of robot calibration and sensing. This includes a geometric and treshold calibration of a multiple robotic line-vision system, robot-based inline 2D/3D quality monitoring using picture-giving and laser triangulation, and a study on prospective polymer composite materials for flexible tactile sensors.     DefGraspNets: Grasp Planning on 3D Fields with Graph Neural Nets

    Robotic grasping of 3D deformable objects is critical for real-world applications such as food handling and robotic surgery. Unlike rigid and articulated objects, 3D deformable objects have infinite degrees of freedom. Fully defining their state requires 3D deformation and stress fields, which are exceptionally difficult to analytically compute or experimentally measure. Thus, evaluating grasp candidates for grasp planning typically requires accurate, but slow 3D finite element method (FEM) simulation. Sampling-based grasp planning is often impractical, as it requires evaluation of a large number of grasp candidates. Gradient-based grasp planning can be more efficient, but requires a differentiable model to synthesize optimal grasps from initial candidates. Differentiable FEM simulators may fill this role, but are typically no faster than standard FEM. In this work, we propose learning a predictive graph neural network (GNN), DefGraspNets, to act as our differentiable model. We train DefGraspNets to predict 3D stress and deformation fields based on FEM-based grasp simulations. DefGraspNets not only runs up to 1500 times faster than the FEM simulator, but also enables fast gradient-based grasp optimization over 3D stress and deformation metrics.     Vision-based Robotic Grasping in Simulation using Deep Reinforcement Learning

    This thesis will investigate different robotic manipulation and grasping approaches. It will present an overview of robotic simulation environments, and offer an evaluation of PyBullet, CoppeliaSim, and Gazebo, comparing various features. The thesis further presents a background for current approaches to robotic manipulation and grasping by describing how the robotic movement and grasping can be organized. State-of-the-Art approaches for learning robotic grasping, both using supervised methods and reinforcement learning methods are presented. Two set of experiments will be conducted in PyBullet, illustrating how Deep Reinforcement Learning methods could be applied to train a 7 degrees of freedom robotic arm to grasp objects
