    Advances In Internal Model Principle Control Theory

    In this thesis, two advanced implementations of the internal model principle (IMP) are presented. The first is the identification of exponentially damped sinusoidal (EDS) signals with unknown parameters which are widely used to model audio signals. This application is developed in discrete time as a signal processing problem. An IMP based adaptive algorithm is developed for estimating two EDS parameters, the damping factor and frequency. The stability and convergence of this adaptive algorithm is analyzed based on a discrete time two time scale averaging theory. Simulation results demonstrate the identification performance of the proposed algorithm and verify its stability. The second advanced implementation of the IMP control theory is the rejection of disturbances consisting of both predictable and unpredictable components. An IMP controller is used for rejecting predictable disturbances. But the phase lag introduced by the IMP controller limits the rejection capability of the wideband disturbance controller, which is used for attenuating unpredictable disturbance, such as white noise. A combination of open and closed-loop control strategy is presented. In the closed-loop mode, both controllers are active. Once the tracking error is insignificant, the input to the IMP controller is disconnected while its output control action is maintained. In the open loop mode, the wideband disturbance controller is made more aggressive for attenuating white noise. Depending on the level of the tracking error, the input to the IMP controller is connected intermittently. Thus the system switches between open and closed-loop modes. A state feedback controller is designed as the wideband disturbance controller in this application. Two types of predictable disturbances are considered, constant and periodic. For a constant disturbance, an integral controller, the simplest IMP controller, is used. For a periodic disturbance with unknown frequencies, adaptive IMP controllers are used to estimate the frequencies before cancelling the disturbances. An extended multiple Lyapunov functions (MLF) theorem is developed for the stability analysis of this intermittent control strategy. Simulation results justify the optimal rejection performance of this switched control by comparing with two other traditional controllers

    Autonomous pointing control of a large satellite antenna subject to parametric uncertainty

    With the development of satellite mobile communications, large antennas are now widely used. The precise pointing of the antenna’s optical axis is essential for many space missions. This paper addresses the challenging problem of high-precision autonomous pointing control of a large satellite antenna. The pointing dynamics are firstly proposed. The proportional–derivative feedback and structural filter to perform pointing maneuvers and suppress antenna vibrations are then presented. An adaptive controller to estimate actual system frequencies in the presence of modal parameters uncertainty is proposed. In order to reduce periodic errors, the modified controllers, which include the proposed adaptive controller and an active disturbance rejection filter, are then developed. The system stability and robustness are analyzed and discussed in the frequency domain. Numerical results are finally provided, and the results have demonstrated that the proposed controllers have good autonomy and robustness

    Control limitations from distributed sensing: theory and Extremely Large Telescope application

    We investigate performance bounds for feedback control of distributed plants where the controller can be centralized (i.e. it has access to measurements from the whole plant), but sensors only measure differences between neighboring subsystem outputs. Such "distributed sensing" can be a technological necessity in applications where system size exceeds accuracy requirements by many orders of magnitude. We formulate how distributed sensing generally limits feedback performance robust to measurement noise and to model uncertainty, without assuming any controller restrictions (among others, no "distributed control" restriction). A major practical consequence is the necessity to cut down integral action on some modes. We particularize the results to spatially invariant systems and finally illustrate implications of our developments for stabilizing the segmented primary mirror of the European Extremely Large Telescope.Comment: submitted to Automatic

    Closed-Loop Control of a Piezo-Fluidic Amplifier

    Fluidic valves based on the Coand\u{a} effect are increasingly being considered for use in aerodynamic flow control applications. A limiting factor is their variation in switching time, which often precludes their use. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the closed-loop control of a recently developed, novel piezo-fluidic valve that reduces response time uncertainty at the expense of operating bandwidth. Use is made of the fact that a fluidic jet responds to a piezo tone by deflecting away from its steady state position. A control signal used to vary this deflection is amplitude modulated onto the piezo tone. Using only a pressure measurement from one of the device output channels, an output-based LQG regulator was designed to follow a desired reference deflection, achieving control of a 90 m/s jet.     System identification and structural control on the JPL Phase B testbed

    The primary objective of NASA's CSI program at JPL is to develop and demonstrate the CSI technology required to achieve high precision structural stability on large complex optical class spacecraft. The focus mission for this work is an orbiting interferometer telescope. Toward the realization of such a mission, a series of evolutionary testbed structures are being constructed. The JPL's CSI Phase B testbed is the second structure constructed in this series which is designed to study the pathlength control problem of the optical train of a stellar interferometer telescope mounted on a large flexible structure. A detailed description of this testbed can be found. This paper describes our efforts in the first phase of active structural control experiments of Phase B testbed using the active control approach where a single piezoelectric active member is used as an actuation device and the measurements include both colocated and noncolocated sensors. Our goal for this experiment is to demonstrate the feasibility of active structural control using both colocated and noncolocated measurements by means of successive control design and loop closing. More specifically, the colocated control loop was designed and closed first to provide good damping improvement over the frequency range of interest. The noncolocated controller was then designed with respect to a partially controlled structure to further improve the performance. Based on our approach, experimental closed-loop results have demonstrated significant performance improvement with excellent stability margins

    Active vibration control techniques for flexible space structures

    Two proposed control system design techniques for active vibration control in flexible space structures are detailed. Control issues relevant only to flexible-body dynamics are addressed, whereas no attempt was made to integrate the flexible and rigid-body spacecraft dynamics. Both of the proposed approaches revealed encouraging results; however, further investigation of the interaction of the flexible and rigid-body dynamics is warranted
