    Mesh-Mon: a Monitoring and Management System for Wireless Mesh Networks

    A mesh network is a network of wireless routers that employ multi-hop routing and can be used to provide network access for mobile clients. Mobile mesh networks can be deployed rapidly to provide an alternate communication infrastructure for emergency response operations in areas with limited or damaged infrastructure. In this dissertation, we present Dart-Mesh: a Linux-based layer-3 dual-radio two-tiered mesh network that provides complete 802.11b coverage in the Sudikoff Lab for Computer Science at Dartmouth College. We faced several challenges in building, testing, monitoring and managing this network. These challenges motivated us to design and implement Mesh-Mon, a network monitoring system to aid system administrators in the management of a mobile mesh network. Mesh-Mon is a scalable, distributed and decentralized management system in which mesh nodes cooperate in a proactive manner to help detect, diagnose and resolve network problems automatically. Mesh-Mon is independent of the routing protocol used by the mesh routing layer and can function even if the routing protocol fails. We demonstrate this feature by running Mesh-Mon on two versions of Dart-Mesh, one running on AODV (a reactive mesh routing protocol) and the second running on OLSR (a proactive mesh routing protocol) in separate experiments. Mobility can cause links to break, leading to disconnected partitions. We identify critical nodes in the network, whose failure may cause a partition. We introduce two new metrics based on social-network analysis: the Localized Bridging Centrality (LBC) metric and the Localized Load-aware Bridging Centrality (LLBC) metric, that can identify critical nodes efficiently and in a fully distributed manner. We run a monitoring component on client nodes, called Mesh-Mon-Ami, which also assists Mesh-Mon nodes in the dissemination of management information between physically disconnected partitions, by acting as carriers for management data. We conclude, from our experimental evaluation on our 16-node Dart-Mesh testbed, that our system solves several management challenges in a scalable manner, and is a useful and effective tool for monitoring and managing real-world mesh networks

    Social Network Analysis Plugin (SNAP) for Mesh Networks

    In a network, bridging nodes are those nodes that from a topological perspective, are strategically located between highly connected regions of nodes. Thus, they have high values of the Bridging Centrality (BC) metric. We recently introduced the Localized Bridging Centrality (LBC) metric, which can identify such nodes via distributed computation, yet has an accuracy equal to that of the centralized BC metric. The LBC and BC metrics are based on the Social Network Analysis (SNA) metric betweenness centrality . We now introduce a new SNA metric that is more suitable for use in wireless mesh networks: the Localized Load-aware Bridging Centrality (LLBC) metric. The LLBC metric improves upon LBC by detecting critical bridging nodes while taking into account the actual traffic flows present in a mesh network. We only use local information from surrounding nodes to compute the LLBC metric, thus our LLBC metric is designed for scalable distributed computation and distributed network analysis. We developed the SNA Plugin (SNAP) for the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol to study the potential use of LBC and LLBC in improving multicast communications. We present some promising initial results for SNAP from real and emulated mesh networks. SNAP is open source and free for academic use

    Exact Distributed Load Centrality Computation: Algorithms, Convergence, and Applications to Distance Vector Routing

    Many optimization techniques for networking protocols take advantage of topological information to improve performance. Often, the topological information at the core of these techniques is a centrality metric such as the Betweenness Centrality (BC) index. BC is, in fact, a centrality metric with many well-known successful applications documented in the literature, from resource allocation to routing. To compute BC, however, each node must run a centralized algorithm and needs to have the global topological knowledge; such requirements limit the feasibility of optimization procedures based on BC. To overcome restrictions of this kind, we present a novel distributed algorithm that requires only local information to compute an alternative similar metric, called Load Centrality (LC). We present the new algorithm together with a proof of its convergence and the analysis of its time complexity. The proposed algorithm is general enough to be integrated with any distance vector (DV) routing protocol. In support of this claim, we provide an implementation on top of Babel, a real-world DV protocol. We use this implementation in an emulation framework to show how LC can be exploited to reduce Babel's convergence time upon node failure, without increasing control overhead. As a key step towards the adoption of centrality-based optimization for routing, we study how the algorithm can be incrementally introduced in a network running a DV routing protocol. We show that even when only a small fraction of nodes participate in the protocol, the algorithm accurately ranks nodes according to their centrality

    A primary aim of wireless ad-hoc networks is to deliver data in areas where there is no pre-defined infrastructure. In these networks, the users, but also the network entities can be potentially mobile. Wireless ad-hoc networks have recently witnessed their fastest growth period ever in history. Real wireless ad-hoc networks are now implemented, deployed and tested, and this trend is likely to increase in the future. However, as such networks are increasingly complex, performance modeling and evaluation play a crucial part in their design process to ensure their successful deployment and exploitation in practice. This special issue on Modeling and Performance Evaluation of Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks aims to open a new critical debate on the evaluation of wireless ad-hoc networks.     Infective flooding in low-duty-cycle networks, properties and bounds

    Flooding information is an important function in many networking applications. In some networks, as wireless sensor networks or some ad-hoc networks it is so essential as to dominate the performance of the entire system. Exploiting some recent results based on the distributed computation of the eigenvector centrality of nodes in the network graph and classical dynamic diffusion models on graphs, this paper derives a novel theoretical framework for efficient resource allocation to flood information in mesh networks with low duty-cycling without the need to build a distribution tree or any other distribution overlay. Furthermore, the method requires only local computations based on each node neighborhood. The model provides lower and upper stochastic bounds on the flooding delay averages on all possible sources with high probability. We show that the lower bound is very close to the theoretical optimum. A simulation-based implementation allows the study of specific topologies and graph models as well as scheduling heuristics and packet losses. Simulation experiments show that simple protocols based on our resource allocation strategy can easily achieve results that are very close to the theoretical minimum obtained building optimized overlays on the network

    This article presents a novel centrality-driven gateway designation framework for the improved real-time performance of low-power wireless sensor networks (WSNs) at system design time. We target time-synchronized channel hopping (TSCH) WSNs with centralized network management and multiple gateways with the objective of enhancing traffic schedulability by design. To this aim, we propose a novel network centrality metric termed minimal-overlap centrality that characterizes the overall number of path overlaps between all the active flows in the network when a given node is selected as gateway. The metric is used as a gateway designation criterion to elect as a gateway the node leading to the minimal number of overlaps. The method is then extended to multiple gateways with the aid of the unsupervised learning method of spectral clustering. Concretely, after a given number of clusters are identified, we use the new metric at each cluster to designate as cluster gateway the node with the least overall number of overlaps. Extensive simulations with random topologies under centralized earliest-deadline-first (EDF) scheduling and shortest-path routing suggest our approach is dominant over traditional centrality metrics from social network analysis, namely, eigenvector, closeness, betweenness, and degree.
