Call admission control using cell breathing concept for wideband CDMA
This paper presents a Call Admission Control
(CAC) algorithm based fuzzy logic to maintain the quality of
service using cell breathing concept. When a new call is accepted
by a cell, its current user is generally affected due to cell
breathing. The proposed CAC algorithm accepts a new call only
if the current users in the cell are not jeopardized. Performance
evaluation is done for single-cell and multicell scenarios. In
multicell scenario dynamic assignment of users to the
neighboring cell, so called handoff, has been considered to
achieve a lower blocking probability. Handoff and new call
requests are assumed with handoff being given preference using
a reserved channel scheme. CAC for different types of services
are shown which depend upon the bandwidth requirement for
voice, data and video. Distance, arrival rate, bandwidth and nonorthogonality
factor of the signal are considered for making the
call acceptance decision. The paper demonstrates that fuzzy logic
with the cell breathing concept can be used to develop a CAC
algorithm to achieve a better performance evaluation
Advanced mobile network monitoring and automated optimization methods
The operation of mobile networks is a complex task with the networks serving a large amount of subscribers with both voice and data services, containing extensive sets of elements, generating extensive amounts of measurement data and being controlled by a large amount of parameters. The objective of this thesis was to ease the operation of mobile networks by introducing advanced monitoring and automated optimization methods. In the monitoring domain the thesis introduced visualization and anomaly detection methods that were applied to detect intrusions, mal-functioning network elements and cluster network elements to do parameter optimization on network-element-cluster level. A key component in the monitoring methods was the Self-Organizing Map. In the automated optimization domain several rule-based Wideband CDMA radio access parameter optimization methods were introduced. The methods tackled automated optimization in areas such as admission control, handover control and mobile base station cell size setting. The results from test usage of the monitoring methods indicated good performance and simulations indicated that the automated optimization methods enable significant improvements in mobile network performance. The presented methods constitute promising feature candidates for the mobile network management system.reviewe
Design and evaluation of an optimization based approach to multiple burst admission control for cdma2000
In our recent study, we have formulated the burst admission control problem for wideband CDMA systems as an integer programming problem. In this paper, we propose and analyze the performance of a novel burst admission technique, called the multiple-burst admission-spatial dimension algorithm (MBA-SD) to judiciously allocate the previous channels in wideband CDMA systems to burst requests. Both the forward link and the reverse link burst requests are considered and the system is simulated by dynamic simulations which takes into account of the user mobility, power control and soft hand-off. We found that significant performance improvement, in terms of data user capacity, coverage, and admission and outage probabilities, could be achieved by our scheme compared to the existing burst assignment algorithms.published_or_final_versio
Soft handover issues in radio resource management for 3G WCDMA networks
PhDMobile terminals allow users to access services while on the move. This unique
feature has driven the rapid growth in the mobile network industry, changing it from a
new technology into a massive industry within less than two decades.
Handover is the essential functionality for dealing with the mobility of the mobile
users. Compared with the conventional hard handover employed in the GSM mobile
networks, the soft handover used in IS-95 and being proposed for 3G has better
performance on both link and system level.
Previous work on soft handover has led to several algorithms being proposed and
extensive research has been conducted on the performance analysis and parameters
optimisation of these algorithms. Most of the previous analysis focused on the uplink
direction. However, in future mobile networks, the downlink is more likely to be the
bottleneck of the system capacity because of the asymmetric nature of new services,
such as Internet traffic.
In this thesis, an in-depth study of the soft handover effects on the downlink
direction of WCDMA networks is carried out, leading to a new method of optimising
soft handover for maximising the downlink capacity and a new power control
approach

Admission Control for Multiuser Communication Systems
During the last few years, broadband wireless communication has experienced very rapid growth in telecommunications industry. Hence, the performance analysis of such systems is one of the most important topics. However, accurate systems’ analysis requires first good modeling of the network traffic. Moreover, broadband wireless communication should achieve certain performance in order to satisfy the customers as well as the operators. Therefore, some call admission control techniques should be integrated with wireless networks in order to deny new users/services if accepting them will lead to degrade the network performance to less than the allowed threshold. This thesis mainly discusses the above two issues which can be summarized as follows. First issue is the traffic modeling of wireless communication. The performance analysis is discussed in terms of the quality of services (QoS) and also the grade of services (GoS). Different scenarios have been studies such as enhancing the GoS of handover users. The second issue is the admission control algorithms. Admission Control is part of radio resource management. The performance of admission control is affected by channel characteristics such as fading and interference. Hence, some wireless channel characteristics are introduced briefly. Seven different channel allocation schemes have been discussed and analyzed. Moreover, different admission control algorithms are analyzed such as power-based and multi-classes fuzzy-logic based. Some simulations analyses are given as well to show the system performance of different algorithms and scenarios.fi=Opinnäytetyö kokotekstinä PDF-muodossa.|en=Thesis fulltext in PDF format.|sv=Lärdomsprov tillgängligt som fulltext i PDF-format
Interference-based dynamic pricing for WCDMA networks using neurodynamic programming
Copyright © 2007 IEEEWe study the problem of optimal integrated dynamic pricing and radio resource management, in terms of resource allocation and call admission control, in a WCDMA network. In such interference-limited network, one's resource usage also degrades the utility of others. A new parameter noise rise factor, which indicates the amount of interference generated by a call, is suggested as a basis for setting price to make users accountable for the congestion externality of their usage. The methods of dynamic programming (DP) are unsuitable for problems with large state spaces due to the associated ldquocurse of dimensionality.rdquo To overcome this, we solve the problem using a simulation-based neurodynamic programming (NDP) method with an action-dependent approximation architecture. Our results show that the proposed optimal policy provides significant average reward and congestion improvement over conventional policies that charge users based on their load factor.Siew-Lee Hew and Langford B. An intelligent-agent approach for managing congestion in W-CDMA networks
PhDResource Management is a crucial aspect in the next generation cellular networks
since the use of W-CDMA technology gives an inherent flexibility in managing the
system capacity. The concept of a “Service Level Agreement” (SLA) also plays a
very important role as it is the means to guarantee the quality of service provided to
the customers in response to the level of service to which they have subscribed.
Hence there is a need to introduce effective SLA-based policies as part of the radio
resource management.
This work proposes the application of intelligent agents in SLA-based control in
resource management, especially when congestion occurs. The work demonstrates the
ability of intelligent agents in improving and maintaining the quality of service to
meet the required SLA as the congestion occurs.
A particularly novel aspect of this work is the use of learning (here Case Based
Reasoning) to predict the control strategies to be imposed. As the system environment
changes, the most suitable policy will be implemented. When congestion occurs, the
system either proposes the solution by recalling from experience (if the event is
similar to what has been previously solved) or recalculates the solution from its
knowledge (if the event is new). With this approach, the system performance will be
monitored at all times and a suitable policy can be immediately applied as the system
environment changes, resulting in maintaining the system quality of service
