Recurrent backpropagation and the dynamical approach to adaptive neural computation
Error backpropagation in feedforward neural network models is a popular learning algorithm that has its roots in nonlinear estimation and optimization. It is being used routinely to calculate error gradients in nonlinear systems with hundreds of thousands of parameters. However, the classical architecture for backpropagation has severe restrictions. The extension of backpropagation to networks with recurrent connections will be reviewed. It is now possible to efficiently compute the error gradients for networks that have temporal dynamics, which opens applications to a host of problems in systems identification and control
Parameter identification of BIPT system using chaotic-enhanced fruit fly optimization algorithm
Bidirectional inductive power transfer (BIPT) system facilitates contactless power transfer between two sides and across an air-gap, through weak magnetic coupling. Typically, this system is nonlinear high order system which includes nonlinear switch components and resonant networks, developing of accurate model is a challenging task. In this paper, a novel technique for parameter identification of a BIPT system is presented by using chaotic-enhanced fruit fly optimization algorithm (CFOA). The fruit fly optimization algorithm (FOA) is a new meta-heuristic technique based on the swarm behavior of the fruit fly. This paper proposes a novel CFOA, which employs chaotic sequence to enhance the global optimization capacity of original FOA. The parameter identification of the BIPT system is formalized as a multi-dimensional optimization problem, and an objective function is established minimizing the errors between the estimated and measured values. All the 11 parameters of this system (Lpi, LT, Lsi, Lso, CT, Cs, M, Rpi, RT, Rsi and Rso) can be identified simultaneously using measured input–output data. Simulations show that the proposed parameter identification technique is robust to measurements noise and variation of operation condition and thus it is suitable for practical application
Optimal global synchronization of partially forced Kuramoto oscillators
We consider the problem of global synchronization in a large random network
of Kuramoto oscillators where some of them are subject to an external
periodically driven force. We explore a recently proposed dimensional reduction
approach and introduce an effective two-dimensional description for the
problem. From the dimensionally reduced model, we obtain analytical predictions
for some critical parameters necessary for the onset of a globally synchronized
state in the system. Moreover, the low dimensional model also allows us to
introduce an optimization scheme for the problem. Our main conclusion, which
has been corroborated by exhaustive numerical simulations, is that for a given
large random network of Kuramoto oscillators, with random natural frequencies
, such that a fraction of them is subject to an external periodic
force with frequency , the best global synchronization properties
correspond to the case where the fraction of the forced oscillators is chosen
to be those ones such that is maximal. Our results might
shed some light on the structure and evolution of natural systems for which the
presence or the absence of global synchronization are desired properties. Some
properties of the optimal forced networks and its relation to recent results in

Open TURNS: An industrial software for uncertainty quantification in simulation
The needs to assess robust performances for complex systems and to answer
tighter regulatory processes (security, safety, environmental control, and
health impacts, etc.) have led to the emergence of a new industrial simulation
challenge: to take uncertainties into account when dealing with complex
numerical simulation frameworks. Therefore, a generic methodology has emerged
from the joint effort of several industrial companies and academic
institutions. EDF R&D, Airbus Group and Phimeca Engineering started a
collaboration at the beginning of 2005, joined by IMACS in 2014, for the
development of an Open Source software platform dedicated to uncertainty
propagation by probabilistic methods, named OpenTURNS for Open source Treatment
of Uncertainty, Risk 'N Statistics. OpenTURNS addresses the specific industrial
challenges attached to uncertainties, which are transparency, genericity,
modularity and multi-accessibility. This paper focuses on OpenTURNS and
presents its main features: openTURNS is an open source software under the LGPL
license, that presents itself as a C++ library and a Python TUI, and which
works under Linux and Windows environment. All the methodological tools are
described in the different sections of this paper: uncertainty quantification,
uncertainty propagation, sensitivity analysis and metamodeling. A section also
explains the generic wrappers way to link openTURNS to any external code. The
paper illustrates as much as possible the methodological tools on an
educational example that simulates the height of a river and compares it to the
height of a dyke that protects industrial facilities. At last, it gives an
overview of the main developments planned for the next few years
