    Fast Information Retrieval in the Open Grid Service Architecture

    Information retrieval offers resource discovery mechanisms for unstructured information and has thus been identified as a standardization goal by the open grid forum. We argue that an integration of information retrieval into the infrastructure is not only an interesting prospect for grid users, but is in fact necessary because the batch processing approach supported by the open grid service architecture is at odds with the requirements of online query processing. The cost of staging the search indices to an allocated compute node to answer sporadic but frequent search queries is prohibitive. We advocate the use of web services as a cross site messaging mechanism and discuss the alternatives. To investigate, we have designed and built a prototype system for grid image retrieval. Unfortunately, the statelessness and isolation of web services proved problematic for our purposes, but we present a software architecture that can efficiently overcome these issues

    An adaptive agent-based system for deregulated smart grids

    The power grid is undergoing a major change due mainly to the increased penetration of renewables and novel digital instruments in the hands of the end users that help to monitor and shift their loads. Such transformation is only possible with the coupling of an information and communication technology infrastructure to the existing power distribution grid. Given the scale and the interoperability requirements of such future system, service-oriented architectures (SOAs) are seen as one of the reference models and are considered already in many of the proposed standards for the smart grid (e.g., IEC-62325 and OASIS eMIX). Beyond the technical issues of what the service-oriented architectures of the smart grid will look like, there is a pressing question about what the added value for the end user could be. Clearly, the operators need to guarantee availability and security of supply, but why should the end users care? In this paper, we explore a scenario in which the end users can both consume and produce small quantities of energy and can trade these quantities in an open and deregulated market. For the trading, they delegate software agents that can fully interoperate and interact with one another thus taking advantage of the SOA. In particular, the agents have strategies, inspired from game theory, to take advantage of a service-oriented smart grid market and give profit to their delegators, while implicitly helping balancing the power grid. The proposal is implemented with simulated agents and interaction with existing Web services. To show the advantage of the agent with strategies, we compare our approach with the “base” agent one by means of simulations, highlighting the advantages of the proposal

    Today Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide several tools for studying and analyzing varied human and natural phenomena, therefore GIS and geospatial data has grown so much in both public and private organizations. A Challenge is the integration of these data to get innovative and exhaustive knowledge about topics of interest. In this paper we describe the design of a Web Map Service (WMS) OGC-compliant, through the use of grid computing technology and demonstrate how this approach can improve, w.r.t. security, performance, efficiency and scalability, the integration of geospatial multi-source data. End users, with a single sign-on, securely and transparently, gets maps whose data are distributed on heterogeneous data sources belonging to one o more Virtual Organizations via distributed queries in a grid computing environment

    PolyOrBAC: a security framework for critical infrastructures

    International audienceDue to physical and logical vulnerabilities, a critical infrastructure (CI) can encounter failures of various degrees of severity, and since there are many interdependencies between CIs, simple failures can have dramatic consequences on the users. In this paper, we mainly focus on malicious threats that might affect the information and communication system that controls the Critical Infrastructure, i.e., the Critical Information Infrastructure (CII). To address the security challenges that are specific of CIIs, we propose a collaborative access control framework called PolyOrBAC. This approach offers each organization taking part in the CII the capacity of collaborating with the other ones, while maintaining a control on its resources and on its internal security policy. The interactions between organizations participating in the CII are implemented through web services (WS), and for each WS a contract is signed between the service-provider organization and the service-user organization. The contract describes the WS functions and parameters, the liability of each party and the security rules controlling the interactions. At runtime, the compliance of all interactions with these security rules is checked. Every deviation from the signed contracts triggers an alarm, the concerned parties are notified and audits can be used as evidence for sanctioning the party responsible for the deviation. Our approach is illustrated by a practical scenario, based on real emergency actions in an electric power grid infrastructure, and a simulation test bed has been implemented to animate this scenario and experiment with its security issues

    A flexible service selection for executing virtual services

    [EN] With the adoption of a service-oriented paradigm on the Web, many software services are likely to fulfil similar functional needs for end-users. We propose to aggregate functionally equivalent software services within one single virtual service, that is, to associate a functionality, a graphical user interface (GUI), and a set of selection rules. When an end user invokes such a virtual service through its GUI to answer his/her functional need, the software service that best responds to the end-user s selection policy is selected and executed and the result is then rendered to the end-user through the GUI of the virtual service. A key innovation in this paper is the flexibility of our proposed service selection policy. First, each selection policy can refer to heterogeneous parameters (e.g., service price, end-user location, and QoS). Second, additional parameters can be added to an existing or new policy with little investment. Third, the end users themselves define a selection policy to apply during the selection process, thanks to the GUI element added as part of the virtual service design.     Resource Discovery Services for Grid Computing Training

    Resource discovery is a core function of e-learning. While initially confined to library environments, it has become pervasive, partly due to the advent of web-based searching and also service-oriented approach. The latter is the focus of this paper as resource discovery (web) services enable existing resources to be identified from a source (library) and re-purposed for educational purposes in other systems such as virtual learning environments. This paper describes the development of such resource discovery services developed as part of an initiative to pilot e-learning and a shared digital library infrastructure for Grid Computing training projects in Europe. The development is also related to a project funded by the UK Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) on publisher metadata interoperability. The resource discovery services correspond to an emerging international service-oriented framework for developing e-learning. This paper also provides an overview of the framework and the use-scenarios in which the resource discovery services have been deployed

    New Product Development based on Web Technology – Case Studies in Brazilian Companies

    The advent of new information and rapid-communication technologies such as extremely powerful desktop computers, the Internet, and the World Wide Web (web) are leading to new and exciting methods of concept evaluation. This paper aims to analyze how companies are exploring Web (Internet) technology for developing new products, based on the concepts of interactivity and connectivity. The adopted methodological approach was case study.Two service companies were studied, selected according to their previous (and preliminary) classification in the Strategic Grid. A plan was developed based on the theoretical background in order to carry out this research. Interviews were made with at least three different professionals (from different areas and hierarchical positions) of each company. Information was collected through semi-structured interviews. The choice of companies of different classification in the Grid is important to analyze the differences and similarities in the new product development process and to allow a comparison among these enterprises. The preliminary results allowed the identification of enablers and tools for supporting the development of a new product as well as the identification of the components that are used during the innovation cycle of creation of a product based on the web

    Utility-Based Mechanism for Structural Self-Organization in Service-Oriented MAS

    Structural relations established among agents influence the performance of decentralized service discovery process in multiagent systems. Moreover, distributed systems should be able to adapt their structural relations to changes in environmental conditions. In this article, we present a service-oriented multiagent systems, where agents initially self-organize their structural relations based on the similarity of their services. During the service discovery process, agents integrate a mechanism that facilitates the self-organization of their structural relations to adapt the structure of the system to the service demand. This mechanism facilitates the task of decentralized service discovery and improves its performance. Each agent has local knowledge about its direct neighbors and the queries received during discovery processes. With this information, an agent is able to analyze its structural relations and decide when it is more appropriate to modify its direct neighbors and select the most suitable acquaintances to replace them.
