    Developing augmented reality systems involves several challenges, that prevent end users and experts from non-technical domains, such as education, to experiment with this technology. In this research we introduce ISAR, an authoring system for augmented reality tabletops targeting users from non-technical domains. ISAR allows non-technical users to create their own interactive tabletop applications and experiment with the use of this technology in domains such as educations, industrial training, and medical rehabilitation.Die Entwicklung von Augmented-Reality-Systemen ist mit mehreren Herausforderungen verbunden, die Endbenutzer und Experten aus nicht-technischen Bereichen, wie z.B. dem Bildungswesen, daran hindern, mit dieser Technologie zu experimentieren. In dieser Forschung stellen wir ISAR vor, ein Autorensystem für Augmented-Reality-Tabletops, das sich an Benutzer aus nicht-technischen Bereichen richtet. ISAR ermöglicht es nicht-technischen Anwendern, ihre eigenen interaktiven Tabletop-Anwendungen zu erstellen und mit dem Einsatz dieser Technologie in Bereichen wie Bildung, industrieller Ausbildung und medizinischer Rehabilitation zu experimentieren

    Adaptive Layout for Interactive Documents

    This thesis presents a novel approach to create automated layouts for rich illustrative material that could adapt according to the screen size and contextual requirements. The adaption not only considers global layout but also deals with the content and layout adaptation of individual illustrations in the layout. An unique solution has been developed that integrates constraint-based and force-directed techniques to create adaptive grid-based and non-grid layouts. A set of annotation layouts are developed which adapt the annotated illustrations to match the contextual requirements over time

    In the scenario of social bookmarking, a user browsing the Web bookmarks web pages and assigns free-text labels (i.e., tags) to them according to their personal preferences. In this technical report, we approach one of the practical aspects when it comes to represent users' interests from their tagging activity, namely the categorization of tags into high-level categories of interest. The reason is that the representation of user profiles on the basis of the myriad of tags available on the Web is certainly unfeasible from various practical perspectives; mainly concerning the unavailability of data to reliably, accurately measure interests across such fine-grained categorisation, and, should the data be available, its overwhelming computational intractability. Motivated by this, our study presents the results of a categorization process whereby a collection of tags posted at Delicious #http://delicious.com# are classified into 200 subcategories of interest.Preprin

    Development of an intranet website

    Established in 1 990, Logical Design Solutions Incorporated (LDS) was among the first to recognize the World Wide Web (Web) as a platform for deploying serious enterprise solutions. LDS provides Global 2000 companies, such as AT&T Corporation (AT&T), with Internet, extranet, and intranet applications that solve real-world business problems. A leader in Web consulting, LDS offers a comprehensive set of solutions and services, from design to development, tailored to organizations with complex enterprise technology needs. In late 1997, AT&T requested LDS to begin developing an intranet strategy that would support AT&T\u27s Cash Balance Pension Plan. AT&T, formerly known as the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, is the largest telecommunications company in the United States, and a worldwide leader in communications services. The objective of this thesis project was for the author to learn, create, and document the Analysis and Design, Development and Implementation, and Quality Assurance Testing phases of AT&T\u27s Pension Update Information Center Intranet Website. The author, the HTML developer, was a key team member of LDS\u27s project team. The LDS project team acted as an extension of AT&T\u27s internal management team providing industry-specific knowledge and Web expertise throughout the development of Pension Update Information Center. While the primary business objective of Pension Update Information Center was to maximize internal communications and at the same time, reduce the rollout cost of AT&T\u27s pension benefit program that impacts 72,600 employees, the LDS project team also had to meet the following secondary business objectives: e To reduce call and work volume at AT&T\u27s Customer Care Center (CCC). e Support AT&T\u27s overall pension communication strategy. Establish the intranet Website as a credible, reliable, and engaging source of information. In order for the LDS project team to meet these business objectives, the following three evolutionary phases of Pension Update Information Center had to be achieved: 1 . Analysis and Design during this phase, the LDS project team worked closely with AT&T\u27s management team and formulated Web strategies and requirements that mirrored the business objectives. 2. Implementation and Development during this phase, the LDS project team integrated the formulated business requirements with leading edge technology, a usable interface design, creative look and feel design, and optimized content. 3. Quality Assurance Testing during this phase, the LDS project team thoroughly tested the implemented the Website until all erroneous information was fixed and business objectives were met. After the above three phases were implemented and approved, the LDS project team delivered a Website that contained a viable, successful Web strategy that balanced AT&T\u27s business and enterprise objectives for user needs and competitive market challenges. The documentation that follows discusses the lifecycle approach that the LDS project team used to meet AT&T\u27s objectives and that the author used to gain an understanding of intranet methodology

    An authoring tool for generalised scenario creation for SignSupport

    Magister Scientiae - MSc (Computer Science)This thesis describes the development cycles of an authoring tool that generalises scenario creation for SignSupport. SignSupport is a mobile communication tool for Deaf people that currently runs on an Android smartphone. The authoring tool is computer-based software that helps a domain expert, with little or no programming skills, design and populate a limited domain conversation scenario between a Deaf person and a hearing person, e.g., when a Deaf patient collects medication at a hospital pharmacy or when a Deaf learner is taking a computer literacy course. SignSupport provides instructions to the Deaf person in signed language videos on a mobile device. The authoring tool enables the creation and population of such scenarios on a computer for subsequent 'playback' on a mobile device. The output of this authoring tool is an XML script, alongside a repository of media les that can be used to render the SignSupport mobile app on any platform. Our concern was to iteratively develop the user interface for the authoring tool, focusing on the domain experts who create the overall flow and content for a given scenario. We had four development iterations, where the rst three were evaluated for usability; for both pharmacy and ICDL course scenarios with purposive sampling. The fourth iteration focused on using the authoring tool to design an ICDL practise mobile app, recording the necessary SASL videos and using an XML parser to render the designs XML script into an Android app. The research conducted herein leveraged multiple approaches to content authoring and generalisation; and further that software generalisation can improve accessibility and a ordability for the ultimate end users. The thesis concludes with a summary of recommendations and lessons learnt

    Authoring knowledge based tutors: ‘tools for content, instructional strategy, student model, and interface design

    Abstract While intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs), also called knowledge based tutors, are becoming more common and proving to be increasingly effective, each one must still be built from scratch at a significant cost. We have developed domain independent tools for authoring all aspects of a knowledge based tutor: the domain model, the teaching strategies, the student model, and the learning environment. In this paper we describe these tools, discuss a number of design issues and design tradeoffs that are involved in building ITS authoring tools, and discuss knowledge acquisition and representation issues encountered in our work. We also describe how we plan to use these tools (collectively called Eon), including "ontology objects," as a meta-authoring tool for designing special purpose authoring tools tailored for specific domain types

The benefits of social tagging are clear – tags enhance Web content browsing and search. However, since these tags may be publicly available to any Internet user, a privacy attacker may collect this information and extract an accurate snapshot of users’ interests or user profiles, containing sensitive information, such as health-related information, political preferences, salary or religion. In order to hinder attackers in their efforts to profile users, this report focuses on the practical aspects of capturing user interests from their tagging activity.
