The design of medium access control (MAC) protocols has been traditionally an intense area of research due to their high impact on the overall performance of wireless communications. The majority of research activities in this field deal with different variations of protocols somehow based on ALOHA, either with or without listen before talk, i.e., carrier sensing multiple access. These protocols operate well under low traffic loads and low number of simultaneous devices. However, they suffer from congestion as the traffic load and the number of devices increase. For this reason, unless revisited, the MAC layer can become a bottleneck for the success of the IoT. In this paper, we provide an overview of the existing MAC solutions for the IoT, describing current limitations and envisioned challenges for the near future. Motivated by those, we identify a family of simple algorithms based on distributed queueing (DQ), which can operate for an infinite number of devices generating any traffic load and pattern. A description of the DQ mechanism is provided and most relevant existing studies of DQ applied in different scenarios are described in this paper. In addition, we provide a novel performance evaluation of DQ when applied for the IoT.     On channel-adaptive fair multiple access control

    Multiple access control (MAC) of the uplink in a wireless mobile computing system is one of the most important resource allocation problems in that the response time and throughput of user applications (e.g., wireless Web surfing) are critically affected by the efficiency of the MAC protocol. Compared with a traditional MAC problem (e.g., the wireline Ethernet), there are two important new challenges in a modern wireless network: (1) multimedia data with diverse traffic requirements are involved; and (2) the wireless channel has a time-varying quality for each user. Furthermore, a more prominent user requirement is fairness among different users, possibly with different traffic demands. While some protocols have been suggested to handle multimedia data and/or tackling the time-varying channel, there are a number of drawbacks in these existing protocols. The most notable drawback is that the channel model is rather unrealistic - just using a two state Markov chain instead of relying on accurate models of multipath fading and shadowing effects. Another common deficiency is that fairness is ignored. In this paper, we propose to use a new notion of fairness that can capture a realistic channel model, and to integrate a fair queueing scheduling algorithm in a MAC protocol to optimize performance while maintaing fairness among users regardless of their channel states and data types.published_or_final_versio

    Vehicular Dynamic Spectrum Access: Using Cognitive Radio for Automobile Networks

    Vehicular Dynamic Spectrum Access (VDSA) combines the advantages of dynamic spectrum access to achieve higher spectrum efficiency and the special mobility pattern of vehicle fleets. This dissertation presents several noval contributions with respect to vehicular communications, especially vehicle-to-vehicle communications. Starting from a system engineering aspect, this dissertation will present several promising future directions for vehicle communications, taking into consideration both the theoretical and practical aspects of wireless communication deployment. This dissertation starts with presenting a feasibility analysis using queueing theory to model and estimate the performance of VDSA within a TV whitespace environment. The analytical tool uses spectrum measurement data and vehicle density to find upper bounds of several performance metrics for a VDSA scenario in TVWS. Then, a framework for optimizing VDSA via artificial intelligence and learning, as well as simulation testbeds that reflect realistic spectrum sharing scenarios between vehicle networks and heterogeneous wireless networks including wireless local area networks and wireless regional area networks. Detailed experimental results justify the testbed for emulating a mobile dynamic spectrum access environment composed of heterogeneous networks with four dimensional mutual interference. Vehicular cooperative communication is the other proposed technique that combines the cooperative communication technology and vehicle platooning, an emerging concept that is expected to both increase highway utilization and enhance both driver experience and safety. This dissertation will focus on the coexistence of multiple vehicle groups in shared spectrum, where intra-group cooperation and inter-group competition are investigated in the aspect of channel access. Finally, a testbed implementation VDSA is presented and a few applications are developed within a VDSA environment, demonstrating the feasibility and benefits of some features in a future transportation system

    Performance Modelling and Resource Allocation of the Emerging Network Architectures for Future Internet

    With the rapid development of information and communications technologies, the traditional network architecture has approached to its performance limit, and thus is unable to meet the requirements of various resource-hungry applications. Significant infrastructure improvements to the network domain are urgently needed to guarantee the continuous network evolution and innovation. To address this important challenge, tremendous research efforts have been made to foster the evolution to Future Internet. Long-term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A), Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualisation (NFV) have been proposed as the key promising network architectures for Future Internet and attract significant attentions in the network and telecom community. This research mainly focuses on the performance modelling and resource allocations of these three architectures. The major contributions are three-fold: 1) LTE-A has been proposed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) as a promising candidate for the evolution of LTE wireless communication. One of the major features of LTE-A is the concept of Carrier Aggregation (CA). CA enables the network operators to exploit the fragmented spectrum and increase the peak transmission data rate, however, this technical innovation introduces serious unbalanced loads among in the radio resource allocation of LTE-A. To alleviate this problem, a novel QoS-aware resource allocation scheme, termed as Cross-CC User Migration (CUM) scheme, is proposed in this research to support real-time services, taking into consideration the system throughput, user fairness and QoS constraints. 2) SDN is an emerging technology towards next-generation Internet. In order to improve the performance of the SDN network, a preemption-based packet-scheduling scheme is firstly proposed in this research to improve the global fairness and reduce the packet loss rate in SDN data plane. Furthermore, in order to achieve a comprehensive and deeper understanding of the performance behaviour of SDN network, this work develops two analytical models to investigate the performance of SDN in the presence of Poisson Process and Markov Modulated Poisson Process (MMPP) respectively. 3) NFV is regarded as a disruptive technology for telecommunication service providers to reduce the Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) and Operational Expenditure (OPEX) through decoupling individual network functions from the underlying hardware devices. While NFV faces a significant challenging problem of Service-Level-Agreement (SLA) guarantee during service provisioning. In order to bridge this gap, a novel comprehensive analytical model based on stochastic network calculus is proposed in this research to investigate end-to-end performance of NFV network. The resource allocation strategies proposed in this study significantly improve the network performance in terms of packet loss probability, global allocation fairness and throughput per user in LTE-A and SDN networks; the analytical models designed in this study can accurately predict the network performances of SDN and NFV networks. Both theoretical analysis and simulation experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and the accuracy of the designed models. In addition, the models are used as practical and cost-effective tools to pinpoint the performance bottlenecks of SDN and NFV networks under various network conditions
