    A Survey of Fault-Tolerance and Fault-Recovery Techniques in Parallel Systems

    Supercomputing systems today often come in the form of large numbers of commodity systems linked together into a computing cluster. These systems, like any distributed system, can have large numbers of independent hardware components cooperating or collaborating on a computation. Unfortunately, any of this vast number of components can fail at any time, resulting in potentially erroneous output. In order to improve the robustness of supercomputing applications in the presence of failures, many techniques have been developed to provide resilience to these kinds of system faults.     A new approach to reversible computing with applications to speculative parallel simulation

    In this thesis, we propose an innovative approach to reversible computing that shifts the focus from the operations to the memory outcome of a generic program. This choice allows us to overcome some typical challenges of "plain" reversible computing. Our methodology is to instrument a generic application with the help of an instrumentation tool, namely Hijacker, which we have redesigned and developed for the purpose. Through compile-time instrumentation, we enhance the program's code to keep track of the memory trace it produces until the end. Regardless of the complexity behind the generation of each computational step of the program, we can build inverse machine instructions just by inspecting the instruction that is attempting to write some value to memory. Therefore from this information, we craft an ad-hoc instruction that conveys this old value and the knowledge of where to replace it. This instruction will become part of a more comprehensive structure, namely the reverse window. Through this structure, we have sufficient information to cancel all the updates done by the generic program during its execution. In this writing, we will discuss the structure of the reverse window, as the building block for the whole reversing framework we designed and finally realized. Albeit we settle our solution in the specific context of the parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) adopting the Time Warp synchronization protocol, this framework paves the way for further general-purpose development and employment. We also present two additional innovative contributions coming from our innovative reversibility approach, both of them still embrace traditional state saving-based rollback strategy. The first contribution aims to harness the advantages of both the possible approaches. We implement the rollback operation combining state saving together with our reversible support through a mathematical model. This model enables the system to choose in autonomicity the best rollback strategy, by the mutable runtime dynamics of programs. The second contribution explores an orthogonal direction, still related to reversible computing aspects. In particular, we will address the problem of reversing shared libraries. Indeed, leading from their nature, shared objects are visible to the whole system and so does every possible external modification of their code. As a consequence, it is not possible to instrument them without affecting other unaware applications. We propose a different method to deal with the instrumentation of shared objects. All our innovative proposals have been assessed using the last generation of the open source ROOT-Sim PDES platform, where we integrated our solutions.     Manetho: Transparent Rollback-Recovery with Low Overhead, Limited Rollback, and Fast Output Commit

    Manetho is a new transparent rollback_recovery protocol for long-running distributed computations. It uses a novel combination of antecedence graph maintenance, uncoordinated check pointing, and sender-based message logging. Manetho simultaneously achieves the advantages of pessimistic message logging, namely limited rollback and fast output commit, and the advantage of optimistic message logging, namely low failure-free overhead. These advantages come at the expense of a complex recovery schem

    Speculation in Parallel and Distributed Event Processing Systems

    Event stream processing (ESP) applications enable the real-time processing of continuous flows of data. Algorithmic trading, network monitoring, and processing data from sensor networks are good examples of applications that traditionally rely upon ESP systems. In addition, technological advances are resulting in an increasing number of devices that are network enabled, producing information that can be automatically collected and processed. This increasing availability of on-line data motivates the development of new and more sophisticated applications that require low-latency processing of large volumes of data. ESP applications are composed of an acyclic graph of operators that is traversed by the data. Inside each operator, the events can be transformed, aggregated, enriched, or filtered out. Some of these operations depend only on the current input events, such operations are called stateless. Other operations, however, depend not only on the current event, but also on a state built during the processing of previous events. Such operations are, therefore, named stateful. As the number of ESP applications grows, there are increasingly strong requirements, which are often difficult to satisfy. In this dissertation, we address two challenges created by the use of stateful operations in a ESP application: (i) stateful operators can be bottlenecks because they are sensitive to the order of events and cannot be trivially parallelized by replication; and (ii), if failures are to be tolerated, the accumulated state of an stateful operator needs to be saved, saving this state traditionally imposes considerable performance costs. Our approach is to evaluate the use of speculation to address these two issues. For handling ordering and parallelization issues in a stateful operator, we propose a speculative approach that both reduces latency when the operator must wait for the correct ordering of the events and improves throughput when the operation in hand is parallelizable. In addition, our approach does not require that user understand concurrent programming or that he or she needs to consider out-of-order execution when writing the operations. For fault-tolerant applications, traditional approaches have imposed prohibitive performance costs due to pessimistic schemes.     A survey of checkpointing algorithms for parallel and distributed computers

    Checkpoint is defined as a designated place in a program at which normal processing is interrupted specifically to preserve the status information necessary to allow resumption of processing at a later time. Checkpointing is the process of saving the status information. This paper surveys the algorithms which have been reported in the literature for checkpointing parallel/distributed systems. It has been observed that most of the algorithms published for checkpointing in message passing systems are based on the seminal article by Chandy and Lamport. A large number of articles have been published in this area by relaxing the assumptions made in this paper and by extending it to minimise the overheads of coordination and context saving. Checkpointing for shared memory systems primarily extend cache coherence protocols to maintain a consistent memory. All of them assume that the main memory is safe for storing the context. Recently algorithms have been published for distributed shared memory systems, which extend the cache coherence protocols used in shared memory systems. They however also include methods for storing the status of distributed memory in stable storage. Most of the algorithms assume that there is no knowledge about the programs being executed. It is however felt that in development of parallel programs the user has to do a fair amount of work in distributing tasks and this information can be effectively used to simplify checkpointing and rollback recovery
