    Fully-Dynamic Bin Packing with Little Repacking

    We study the classic bin packing problem in a fully-dynamic setting, where new items can arrive and old items may depart. We want algorithms with low asymptotic competitive ratio while repacking items sparingly between updates. Formally, each item i has a movement cost c_i >= 0, and we want to use alpha * OPT bins and incur a movement cost gamma * c_i, either in the worst case, or in an amortized sense, for alpha, gamma as small as possible. We call gamma the recourse of the algorithm. This is motivated by cloud storage applications, where fully-dynamic bin packing models the problem of data backup to minimize the number of disks used, as well as communication incurred in moving file backups between disks. Since the set of files changes over time, we could recompute a solution periodically from scratch, but this would give a high number of disk rewrites, incurring a high energy cost and possible wear and tear of the disks. In this work, we present optimal tradeoffs between number of bins used and number of items repacked, as well as natural extensions of the latter measure

    Physics of Microswimmers - Single Particle Motion and Collective Behavior

    Locomotion and transport of microorganisms in fluids is an essential aspect of life. Search for food, orientation toward light, spreading of off-spring, and the formation of colonies are only possible due to locomotion. Swimming at the microscale occurs at low Reynolds numbers, where fluid friction and viscosity dominates over inertia. Here, evolution achieved propulsion mechanisms, which overcome and even exploit drag. Prominent propulsion mechanisms are rotating helical flagella, exploited by many bacteria, and snake-like or whip-like motion of eukaryotic flagella, utilized by sperm and algae. For artificial microswimmers, alternative concepts to convert chemical energy or heat into directed motion can be employed, which are potentially more efficient. The dynamics of microswimmers comprises many facets, which are all required to achieve locomotion. In this article, we review the physics of locomotion of biological and synthetic microswimmers, and the collective behavior of their assemblies. Starting from individual microswimmers, we describe the various propulsion mechanism of biological and synthetic systems and address the hydrodynamic aspects of swimming. This comprises synchronization and the concerted beating of flagella and cilia. In addition, the swimming behavior next to surfaces is examined.     Instantaneous multi-sensor task allocation in static and dynamic environments

    A sensor network often consists of a large number of sensing devices of different types. Upon deployment in the field, these sensing devices form an ad hoc network using wireless links or cables to communicate with each other. Sensor networks are increasingly used to support emergency responders in the field usually requiring many sensing tasks to be supported at the same time. By a sensing task we mean any job that requires some amount of sensing resources to be accomplished such as localizing persons in need of help or detecting an event. Tasks might share the usage of a sensor, but more often compete to exclusively control it because of the limited number of sensors and overlapping needs with other tasks. Sensors are in fact scarce and in high demand. In such cases, it might not be possible to satisfy the requirements of all tasks using available sensors. Therefore, the fundamental question to answer is: “Which sensor should be allocated to which task?", which summarizes the Multi-Sensor Task Allocation (MSTA) problem. We focus on a particular MSTA instance where the environment does not provide enough information to plan for future allocations constraining us to perform instantaneous allocation. We look at this problem in both static setting, where all task requests from emergency responders arrive at once, and dynamic setting, where tasks arrive and depart over time. We provide novel solutions based on centralized and distributed approaches. We evaluate their performance using mainly simulations on randomly generated problem instances; moreover, for the dynamic setting, we consider also feasibility of deploying part of the distributed allocation system on user mobile devices.     Dynamic, data-driven decision-making in revenue management

In the first module, we consider a personalized RM setting, where items with limited inventories are recommended to heterogeneous customers sequentially visiting an e-commerce platform. We take the perspective of worst-case competitive ratio analysis, and aim to develop algorithms whose performance guarantees do not depend on the customer arrival process. We provide the first solution to this problem when there are both multiple items and multiple prices at which they could be sold, framing it as a general online resource allocation problem and developing a system of forecast-independent bid prices (Chapter 2). Second, we study a related assortment planning problem faced by Walmart Online Grocery, where before checkout, customers are recommended "add-on" items that are complementary to their current shopping cart (Chapter 3). Third, we derive inventory-dependent priceskimming policies for the single-leg RM problem, which extends existing competitive ratio results to non-independent demand (Chapter 4). In this module, we test our algorithms using a publicly-available data set from a major hotel chain. In the second module, we study bundling, which is the practice of selling different items together, and show how to learn and price using bundles. First, we introduce bundling as a new, alternate method for learning the price elasticities of items, which does not require any changing of prices; we validate our method on data from a large online retailer (Chapter 5). Second, we show how to sell bundles of goods profitably even when the goods have high production costs, and derive both distribution-dependent and distribution-free guarantees on the profitability (Chapter 6). In the final module, we study the Markovian multi-armed bandit problem under an undiscounted finite time horizon (Chapter 7). We improve existing approximation algorithms using LP rounding and random sampling techniques, which result in a (1/2 - eps)- approximation for the correlated stochastic knapsack problem that is tight relative to the LP.
