A Hybrid Knowledge Discovery System Based on Items and Tags
Exponentially increasing knowledge in a management system is the main cause of the overload problem. Development of a recommender service embedded in the management system is challenging. This paper proposes a hybrid approach by combining an item-based recommendation technique (collaborative filtering technique) with a tag-based recommendation technique (content based filtering technique). In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed hybrid approach, a group of knowledge management system users are invited as participants in the research. Participants are asked to use the prototype of a management system embedded within the knowledge recommender service for four months, which guarantees that each interaction by participants with knowledge items are recorded. A confusion matrix is used to compute accuracy of the proposed hybrid approach. The results of the experiments reveal that the hybrid approach outperforms both item-based and tag-based approaches. The hybrid approach seems to be a promising technique for a recommender service in the knowledge management system
Leveraging tagging data for recommender systems
The goal of recommender systems is to provide personalized recommendations of products or services to users facing the problem of information overload on the Web. They provide personalized recommendations that best suit a customer's taste, preferences, and individual needs. Especially on large-scale Web sites where millions of items such as books or movies are offered to the users, recommender system technologies play an increasingly important role. One of their main advantages is that they reduce a user's decision-making effort. However, recommender systems are also of high importance from the service provider or system perspective. For instance, they can convince a customer to buy something or develop trust in the system as a whole which ensures customer loyalty and repeat sales gains. With the advent of the Social Web, user generated content has enriched the social dimension of the Web. New types of Web applications have emerged which emphasize content sharing and collaboration. These so-called Social Web platforms turned users from passive recipients of information into active and engaged contributors. As a result, the amount of user contributed information provided by the Social Web poses both new possibilities and challenges for recommender system research. This work deals with the question of how user-provided tagging data can be used to improve the quality of recommender systems. Tag-based recommendations and explanations are the two main areas of contribution in this work. The area of tag-based recommendations deals mainly with the topic of recommending items by exploiting tagging data. A tag recommender algorithm is proposed which can generate highly-accurate tag recommendations in real-time. Furthermore, the concept of user- and item-specific tag preferences is introduced in this work. By attaching feelings to tags users are provided a powerful means to express in detail which features of an item they particularly like or dislike. Additionally, new recommendation schemes are presented that can exploit tag preference data to improve recommendation accuracy. The area of tag-based explanations, on the other hand, deals with questions of how explanations for recommendations should be communicated to the user in the best possible way. New explanation methods based on personalized and non-personalized tag clouds are introduced. The personalized tag cloud interface makes use of the idea of user- and item-specific tag preferences. Furthermore, a first set of possible guidelines for designing or choosing an explanation interface for a recommender system is provided
Visualizing recommendations to support exploration, transparency and controllability
Research on recommender systems has traditionally focused on the development of algorithms to improve accuracy of recommendations. So far, little research has been done to enable user interaction with such systems as a basis to support exploration and control by end users. In this paper, we present our research on the use of information visualization techniques to interact with recommender systems. We investigated how information visualization can improve user understanding of the typically black-box rationale behind recommendations in order to increase their perceived relevance and meaning and to support exploration and user involvement in the recommendation process. Our study has been performed using TalkExplorer, an interactive visualization tool developed for attendees of academic conferences. The results of user studies performed at two conferences allowed us to obtain interesting insights to enhance user interfaces that integrate recommendation technology. More specifically, effectiveness and probability of item selection both increase when users are able to explore and interrelate multiple entities - i.e. items bookmarked by users, recommendations and tags. Tag-Aware Recommender Systems: A State-of-the-art Survey
In the past decade, Social Tagging Systems have attracted increasing
attention from both physical and computer science communities. Besides the
underlying structure and dynamics of tagging systems, many efforts have been
addressed to unify tagging information to reveal user behaviors and
preferences, extract the latent semantic relations among items, make
recommendations, and so on. Specifically, this article summarizes recent
progress about tag-aware recommender systems, emphasizing on the contributions
from three mainstream perspectives and approaches: network-based methods,
tensor-based methods, and the topic-based methods. Finally, we outline some
other tag-related works and future challenges of tag-aware recommendation

Using Posters to Recommend Anime and Mangas in a Cold-Start Scenario
Item cold-start is a classical issue in recommender systems that affects
anime and manga recommendations as well. This problem can be framed as follows:
how to predict whether a user will like a manga that received few ratings from
the community? Content-based techniques can alleviate this issue but require
extra information, that is usually expensive to gather. In this paper, we use a
deep learning technique, Illustration2Vec, to easily extract tag information
from the manga and anime posters (e.g., sword, or ponytail). We propose BALSE
(Blended Alternate Least Squares with Explanation), a new model for
collaborative filtering, that benefits from this extra information to recommend
mangas. We show, using real data from an online manga recommender system called
Mangaki, that our model improves substantially the quality of recommendations,
especially for less-known manga, and is able to provide an interpretation of

Recommending Items in Social Tagging Systems Using Tag and Time Information
In this work we present a novel item recommendation approach that aims at
improving Collaborative Filtering (CF) in social tagging systems using the
information about tags and time. Our algorithm follows a two-step approach,
where in the first step a potentially interesting candidate item-set is found
using user-based CF and in the second step this candidate item-set is ranked
using item-based CF. Within this ranking step we integrate the information of
tag usage and time using the Base-Level Learning (BLL) equation coming from
human memory theory that is used to determine the reuse-probability of words
and tags using a power-law forgetting function.
As the results of our extensive evaluation conducted on data-sets gathered
from three social tagging systems (BibSonomy, CiteULike and MovieLens) show,
the usage of tag-based and time information via the BLL equation also helps to
improve the ranking and recommendation process of items and thus, can be used
to realize an effective item recommender that outperforms two alternative

The state-of-the-art in personalized recommender systems for social networking
With the explosion of Web 2.0 application such as blogs, social and professional networks, and various other types of social media, the rich online information and various new sources of knowledge flood users and hence pose a great challenge in terms of information overload. It is critical to use intelligent agent software systems to assist users in finding the right information from an abundance of Web data. Recommender systems can help users deal with information overload problem efficiently by suggesting items (e.g., information and products) that match users’ personal interests. The recommender technology has been successfully employed in many applications such as recommending films, music, books, etc. The purpose of this report is to give an overview of existing technologies for building personalized recommender systems in social networking environment, to propose a research direction for addressing user profiling and cold start problems by exploiting user-generated content newly available in Web 2.0
Hybrid group recommendations for a travel service
Recommendation techniques have proven their usefulness as a tool to cope with the information overload problem in many classical domains such as movies, books, and music. Additional challenges for recommender systems emerge in the domain of tourism such as acquiring metadata and feedback, the sparsity of the rating matrix, user constraints, and the fact that traveling is often a group activity. This paper proposes a recommender system that offers personalized recommendations for travel destinations to individuals and groups. These recommendations are based on the users' rating profile, personal interests, and specific demands for their next destination. The recommendation algorithm is a hybrid approach combining a content-based, collaborative filtering, and knowledge-based solution. For groups of users, such as families or friends, individual recommendations are aggregated into group recommendations, with an additional opportunity for users to give feedback on these group recommendations. A group of test users evaluated the recommender system using a prototype web application. The results prove the usefulness of individual and group recommendations and show that users prefer the hybrid algorithm over each individual technique. This paper demonstrates the added value of various recommendation algorithms in terms of different quality aspects, compared to an unpersonalized list of the most-popular destinations
