Visualizations for an Explainable Planning Agent
In this paper, we report on the visualization capabilities of an Explainable
AI Planning (XAIP) agent that can support human in the loop decision making.
Imposing transparency and explainability requirements on such agents is
especially important in order to establish trust and common ground with the
end-to-end automated planning system. Visualizing the agent's internal
decision-making processes is a crucial step towards achieving this. This may
include externalizing the "brain" of the agent -- starting from its sensory
inputs, to progressively higher order decisions made by it in order to drive
its planning components. We also show how the planner can bootstrap on the
latest techniques in explainable planning to cast plan visualization as a plan
explanation problem, and thus provide concise model-based visualization of its
plans. We demonstrate these functionalities in the context of the automated

Measuring and Managing Answer Quality for Online Data-Intensive Services
Online data-intensive services parallelize query execution across distributed
software components. Interactive response time is a priority, so online query
executions return answers without waiting for slow running components to
finish. However, data from these slow components could lead to better answers.
We propose Ubora, an approach to measure the effect of slow running components
on the quality of answers. Ubora randomly samples online queries and executes
them twice. The first execution elides data from slow components and provides
fast online answers; the second execution waits for all components to complete.
Ubora uses memoization to speed up mature executions by replaying network
messages exchanged between components. Our systems-level implementation works
for a wide range of platforms, including Hadoop/Yarn, Apache Lucene, the
EasyRec Recommendation Engine, and the OpenEphyra question answering system.
Ubora computes answer quality much faster than competing approaches that do not
use memoization. With Ubora, we show that answer quality can and should be used
to guide online admission control. Our adaptive controller processed 37% more
queries than a competing controller guided by the rate of timeouts.Comment: Technical Repor
Towards adaptive multi-robot systems: self-organization and self-adaptation

The reason for this is that system designers are not able to fully specify the system during specification and development and before it is being deployed. Natural swarm systems enjoy similar characteristics, yet, being self-adaptive and being able to self-organize, these systems show beneficial emergent behaviour. Similar concepts can be extremely helpful for artificial systems, especially when it comes to multi-robot scenarios, which require such solution in order to be applicable to highly uncertain real world application. In this article, we present a comprehensive overview over state-of-the-art solutions in emergent systems, self-organization, self-adaptation, and robotics. We discuss these approaches in the light of a framework for multi-robot systems and identify similarities, differences missing links and open gaps that have to be addressed in order to make this framework possible
A Closed-Loop Perspective on Symbiotic Human-Computer Interaction
This paper is concerned with how people interact with an emergent form of technology that is capable of both monitoring and affecting the psychology and behaviour of the user. The current relationship between people and computer is characterised as asymmetrical and static. The closed-loop dynamic of physiological computing systems is used as an example of a symmetrical and symbiotic HCI, where the central nervous system of the user and an adaptive software controller are engaged in constant dialogue. This emergent technology offers several benefits such as: intelligent adaptation, a capacity to learn and an ability to personalise software to the individual. This paper argues that such benefits can only be obtained at the cost of a strategic reconfiguration of the relationship between people and technology - specifically users must cede a degree of control over their interaction with technology in order to create an interaction that is active, dynamic and capable of responding in a stochastic fashion. The capacity of the system to successfully translate human goals and values into adaptive responses that are appropriate and effective at the interface represents a particular challenge. It is concluded that technology can develop lifelike qualities (e.g. complexity, sentience, freedom) through sustained and symbiotic interaction with human beings. However, there are a number of risks associated with this strategy as interaction with this category of technology can subvert skills, self-knowledge and the autonomy of human user
A survey of self-awareness and its application in computing systems
Novel computing systems are increasingly being composed of large numbers of heterogeneous components, each with potentially different goals or local perspectives, and connected in networks which change over time. Management of such systems quickly becomes infeasible for humans. As such, future computing systems should be able to achieve advanced levels of autonomous behaviour. In this context, the system's ability to be self-aware and be able to self-express becomes important. This paper surveys definitions and current understanding of self-awareness and self-expression in biology and cognitive science. Subsequently, previous efforts to apply these concepts to computing systems are described. This has enabled the development of novel working definitions for self-awareness and self-expression within the context of computing systems
MoCog1: A computer simulation of recognition-primed human decision making
The results of the first stage of a research effort to develop a 'sophisticated' computer model of human cognitive behavior are described. Most human decision making is an experience-based, relatively straight-forward, largely automatic response to internal goals and drives, utilizing cues and opportunities perceived from the current environment. The development of the architecture and computer program (MoCog1) associated with such 'recognition-primed' decision making is discussed. The resultant computer program was successfully utilized as a vehicle to simulate earlier findings that relate how an individual's implicit theories orient the individual toward particular goals, with resultant cognitions, affects, and behavior in response to their environment
