    A Survey on Semantic Processing Techniques

    Semantic processing is a fundamental research domain in computational linguistics. In the era of powerful pre-trained language models and large language models, the advancement of research in this domain appears to be decelerating. However, the study of semantics is multi-dimensional in linguistics. The research depth and breadth of computational semantic processing can be largely improved with new technologies. In this survey, we analyzed five semantic processing tasks, e.g., word sense disambiguation, anaphora resolution, named entity recognition, concept extraction, and subjectivity detection. We study relevant theoretical research in these fields, advanced methods, and downstream applications. We connect the surveyed tasks with downstream applications because this may inspire future scholars to fuse these low-level semantic processing tasks with high-level natural language processing tasks. The review of theoretical research may also inspire new tasks and technologies in the semantic processing domain.     Hybrid deep learning model for sarcasm detection in Indian indigenous language using word-emoji embeddings

    Automated sarcasm detection is deemed as a complex natural language processing task and extending it to a morphologically-rich and free-order dominant indigenous Indian language Hindi is another challenge in itself. The scarcity of resources and tools such as annotated corpora, lexicons, dependency parser, Part-of-Speech tagger and benchmark datasets engorge the linguistic challenges of sarcasm detection in low-resource languages like Hindi. Furthermore, as context incongruity is imperative to detect sarcasm, various linguistic, aural and visual cues can be used to predict target utterance as sarcastic. While pre-trained word embeddings capture the meanings, semantic relationships and different types of contexts in the form of word representations, emojis can also render useful contextual information, analogous to human facial expressions, for gauging sarcasm. Thus, the goal of this research is to demonstrate the use of a hybrid deep learning model trained using two embeddings, namely word and emoji embeddings to detect sarcasm. The model is validated on a Hindi tweets dataset, Sarc-H, manually annotated with sarcastic and non-sarcastic labels. The preliminary results clearly depict the importance of using emojis for sarcasm detection, with our model attaining an accuracy of 97.35% with an F-score of 0.9708. The research validates that automated feature engineering facilitates efficient and repeatable predictive model for detecting sarcasm in indigenous, low-resource languages

    NATIONAL IDENTITY AND NATIONALISM IN TAIWAN

    Relations between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of China are of critical importance to the national interests and security of the United States. Periods of increased tension have coincided with political transitions in Taiwan and are tied to relative levels of support for Taiwanese national self-determination and independence. This thesis examines the changing nature of national identity in Taiwan, from the Japanese occupation to the present. The thesis reviews historical events, policy initiatives, political rhetoric, and survey data to identify both ethnic and civic forms of nationalism present in Taiwan; ethnic nationalism is tied to a distinct common culture and heritage whereas civic nationalism is tied to shared political ideals that transcend ethnicity. The research finds that an ethnic Taiwanese identity emerged under Japanese colonial rule (1895–1945) and coalesced under the administration of the authoritarian Kuomintang (KMT) that fled the mainland in 1949. This rendered a divide between those who identified as Taiwanese and those who identified with the people of mainland China. However, following a period of rapid democratization, Taiwanese identity is becoming increasingly civic in nature, based on a shared respect for democratic ideals. This has significant implications for the prospect of reunification with the mainland where democracy is antithetical to the Chinese Communist Party.Major, United States Marine CorpsApproved for public release.     A generative framework for computer-based interactive art in mass transport systems.

    Over the course of the past decade the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) stations in Taiwan have become open air art galleries: with more prominent and frequent display of various artistic creations in stations, including interactive artworks. However, unlike the audiences in more meticulously choreographed exhibition contexts, those in stations are usually involuntary. New criteria for the creation and evaluation of artworks in these context are necessary to enhance the connection between the audience and the artwork, and to elicit meaningful experience via interactivity. This research aims to uncover the critical factors that can turn an indifferent passenger into an explorative participant, subsequently leading them to obtain meaningful experiences through interaction with computer-based interactive artwork. This research focuses on artworks that are permanently installed in the stations, with three case studies conducted in MRT stations forming the backbone of the research. Field observation was the first step in each case study, conducted in order to understand the fundamentals of the interactivity between the passengers and the artworks. This was followed by in-depth interviews with the passengers and three professional interview groups. A critical Analytical Framework was formed throughout the course of the research, identifying five engaging characteristics: Incentive, Transfer, Accessibility, Play, and Challenge. These five characteristics were eventually reapplied to re-examine the case studies and the content of the interviews with the professionals. The findings of this research articulate how the Analytical Framework can be adopted in future research intended to create the conditions for more meaningful art-interactions. This Analytical Framework will assist artists, designers and researchers in their pre-planning and follow up evaluations of the degree of engagement generated by computer-based interactive artworks displayed in transport hubs. The interest that the outcomes of this research has attracted in the field suggests that the framework could be extended to the examination of various computer-based interactive artworks in similar public contexts. In this context, the framework would play a valuable role in uncovering a more dynamic paradigm used to illustrate how meaningful experiences can evolve in similar public spaces
