    High Speed Dim Air Target Detection Using Airborne Radar under Clutter and Jamming Effects

    The challenging potential problems associated with using airborne radar in detection of high Speed Maneuvering Dim Target (HSMDT) are the highly noise, jamming and clutter effects. The problem is not only how to remove clutter and jamming as well as the range migration and Doppler ambiguity estimation problems due to high relative speed between the targets and airborne radar. Some of the recently published works ignored the range migration problems, while the others ignored the Doppler ambiguity estimation. In this paper a new hybrid technique using Optimum Space Time Adaptive Processing (OSTAP), Second Order Keystone Transform (SOKT), and the Improved Fractional Radon Transform (IFrRT) was proposed. The OSTAP was applied as anti-jamming and clutter rejection method, the SOKT corrects the range curvature and part of the range walk, then the IFrRT estimates the target’ radial acceleration and corrects the residual range walk. The simulation demonstrates the validity and effectiveness of the proposed technique, and its advantages over the previous researches by comparing its probability of detection with the traditional methods. The new approach increases the probability of detection, and also overcomes the limitation of Doppler frequency ambiguity

    Information inference for cyber-physical systems with application to aviation safety and space situational awareness

    Due to the rapid advancement of technologies on sensors and processors, engineering systems have become more complex and highly automated to meet ever stringent performance and safety requirements. These systems are usually composed of physical plants (e.g., aircraft, spacecraft, ground vehicles, etc.) and cyber components (e.g., sensing, communication, and computing units), and thus called as Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs). For safe, efficient, and sustainable operation of a CPS, the states and physical characteristics of the system need to be effectively estimated or inferred from sensing data by proper information inference algorithms. However, due to the complex nature of the interacting multiple-heterogeneous elements of the CPS, the information inference of the CPS is a challenging task, where exiting methods designed for a single-element dynamic system (or for even dynamic systems with multiple-homogenous elements) could not be applicable. Moreover, the increasing number of sensor resources in CPSs makes the task even more challenging as meaningful information needs to be accurately and effectively inferred from huge amount of data, which is usually noise corrupted. Many aerospace systems such as air traffic control systems, pilot-automation integrated systems, networked unmanned aircraft systems, and space surveillance systems are good examples of CPSs and thus have the aforementioned challenging problems. The goals of this research are to 1) overcome the challenges in complex CPSs by developing new information inference methodologies based on control, estimation, hybrid systems and information theories, and 2) successfully apply them to various complex and safety-critical aerospace systems such as air transportation systems, space surveillance systems, and integrated human-machine systems, to promote their efficiency and safety

    Moving Target Parameters Estimation in Non-Coherent MIMO Radar Systems

    The problem of estimating the parameters of a moving target in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is considered and a new approach for estimating the moving target parameters by making use of the phase information associated with each transmit-receive path is introduced. It is required for this technique that different receive antennas have the same time reference, but no synchronization of initial phases of the receive antennas is needed and, therefore, the estimation process is non-coherent. We model the target motion within a certain processing interval as a polynomial of general order. The first three coefficients of such a polynomial correspond to the initial location, velocity, and acceleration of the target, respectively. A new maximum likelihood (ML) technique for estimating the target motion coefficients is developed. It is shown that the considered ML problem can be interpreted as the classic "overdetermined" nonlinear least-squares problem. The proposed ML estimator requires multi-dimensional search over the unknown polynomial coefficients. The Cram\'er-Rao Bound (CRB) for the proposed parameter estimation problem is derived.     Inertial Measurement Unit based Virtual Antenna Arrays - DoA Estimation and Positioning in Wireless Networks

    Today we have different location based services available in a mobile phone or mobile station (MS). These services include: direction finding to nearby ATMs, locating favorite food restaurants, or finding any target destination. Similarly, we see different applications of the positioning and navigation systems in firefighting or other rescue operations. The common factor in almost all of the location based services is the system's ability to determine the user's current position, with reference to a floor plan or a navigation map. Current technologies are using sensor data measurements from one or more sensors, available to the positioning device, for positioning and navigation. Typical examples are radio based positioning such as global positioning system, inertial sensors based inertial navigation system, or camera based positioning systems. Different accuracy and availability conditions of the positioning and navigation solution can be obtained depending on the positioning algorithms and the available sensor information.Nowadays, the focus of research in positioning and navigation has been mostly on the use of existing hardware infrastructure and low-cost solutions, such that the proposed technique can be deployed with ease and without extra infrastructure requirements as well as without any expensive sensor equipment. In this work, we investigate a novel idea for positioning using existing wireless networks and low-cost inertial sensor measurements available at the MS. We propose to use received baseband radio signal along with inertial sensor data, such as accelerometer and rate gyroscope measurements, for direction of arrival (DoA) estimation and positioning. The DoA information from different base stations or access points can be used to estimate the MS position using triangulation technique. Furthermore, due to size and cost restrictions it is difficult to have real antenna arrays at the MS, the idea of DoA estimation and positioning is proposed to be used with single antenna devices by using the so-called virtual antenna arrays.We have presented our research results in three different papers. We provide measurement based results to perform a quantitative evaluation of DoA estimation using arbitrary virtual antenna arrays in 3-D; where a state-of-the-art high-resolution algorithm has been used for radio signal parameter estimation. Furthermore, we provide an extended Kalman filter framework to investigate the performance of unaided inertial navigation systems with 3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis rate gyroscope measurements, from a six-degrees-of-freedom inertial measurement unit. Using the extended Kalman filter framework, we provide results for position estimation error standard deviation with respect to integration time for an unaided inertial navigation system; where the effect of different stochastic errors noise sources in the inertial sensors measurements such as white Gaussian noise and bias instability noise is investigated. Also, we derive a closed form expression for Cramér-Rao lower bound to investigate DoA estimation accuracy for a far-field source using random antenna arrays in 3-D. The Cramér-Rao lower bound is obtained using known antenna coordinates as well as using estimated antenna coordinates, where the antenna coordinates are estimated with an uncertainty whose standard deviation is known. Furthermore, using Monte-Carlo simulations for random antenna arrays, we provide Cramér-Rao lower bound based performance evaluation of random 3-D antenna arrays for DoA estimation

    Approximate Gaussian conjugacy: parametric recursive filtering under nonlinearity, multimodality, uncertainty, and constraint, and beyond

    Since the landmark work of R. E. Kalman in the 1960s, considerable efforts have been devoted to time series state space models for a large variety of dynamic estimation problems. In particular, parametric filters that seek analytical estimates based on a closed-form Markov–Bayes recursion, e.g., recursion from a Gaussian or Gaussian mixture (GM) prior to a Gaussian/GM posterior (termed ‘Gaussian conjugacy’ in this paper), form the backbone for a general time series filter design. Due to challenges arising from nonlinearity, multimodality (including target maneuver), intractable uncertainties (such as unknown inputs and/or non-Gaussian noises) and constraints (including circular quantities), etc., new theories, algorithms, and technologies have been developed continuously to maintain such a conjugacy, or to approximate it as close as possible. They had contributed in large part to the prospective developments of time series parametric filters in the last six decades. In this paper, we review the state of the art in distinctive categories and highlight some insights that may otherwise be easily overlooked. In particular, specific attention is paid to nonlinear systems with an informative observation, multimodal systems including Gaussian mixture posterior and maneuvers, and intractable unknown inputs and constraints, to fill some gaps in existing reviews and surveys. In addition, we provide some new thoughts on alternatives to the first-order Markov transition model and on filter evaluation with regard to computing complexity

    Tracking of Noncooperative Airborne Targets Using ADS-B Signal and Radar Sensing

    As the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system has gained wide acceptance, additional exploitations of the radioed satellite-based information are topics of current interest. One such opportunity includes the augmentation of the communication ADS-B signal with a random biphase modulation for concurrent use as a radar signal. This paper addresses the formulation and analysis of a suitable noncooperative multitarget tracking method for the ADS-B radar system using radar ranging techniques and particle filter algorithms. In addition, the low-update-rate measurement due to the ADS-B system specification is discussed in order to provide acceptable estimation results. Simulation results show satisfactory tracking capability up to several kilometers with acceptable accuracy

    Human Motion Trajectory Prediction: A Survey

    With growing numbers of intelligent autonomous systems in human environments, the ability of such systems to perceive, understand and anticipate human behavior becomes increasingly important. Specifically, predicting future positions of dynamic agents and planning considering such predictions are key tasks for self-driving vehicles, service robots and advanced surveillance systems. This paper provides a survey of human motion trajectory prediction. We review, analyze and structure a large selection of work from different communities and propose a taxonomy that categorizes existing methods based on the motion modeling approach and level of contextual information used. We provide an overview of the existing datasets and performance metrics.
