Establishment of a novel predictive reliability assessment strategy for ship machinery
There is no doubt that recent years, maritime industry is moving forward to novel and sophisticated inspection and maintenance practices. Nowadays maintenance is encountered as an operational method, which can be employed both as a profit generating process and a cost reduction budget centre through an enhanced Operation and Maintenance (O&M) strategy. In the first place, a flexible framework to be applicable on complex system level of machinery can be introduced towards ship maintenance scheduling of systems, subsystems and components.;This holistic inspection and maintenance notion should be implemented by integrating different strategies, methodologies, technologies and tools, suitably selected by fulfilling the requirements of the selected ship systems. In this thesis, an innovative maintenance strategy for ship machinery is proposed, namely the Probabilistic Machinery Reliability Assessment (PMRA) strategy focusing towards the reliability and safety enhancement of main systems, subsystems and maintainable units and components.;In this respect, the combination of a data mining method (k-means), the manufacturer safety aspects, the dynamic state modelling (Markov Chains), the probabilistic predictive reliability assessment (Bayesian Belief Networks) and the qualitative decision making (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) is employed encompassing the benefits of qualitative and quantitative reliability assessment. PMRA has been clearly demonstrated in two case studies applied on offshore platform oil and gas and selected ship machinery.;The results are used to identify the most unreliability systems, subsystems and components, while advising suitable practical inspection and maintenance activities. Circuits and Systems Advances in Near Threshold Computing
Modern society is witnessing a sea change in ubiquitous computing, in which people have embraced computing systems as an indispensable part of day-to-day existence. Computation, storage, and communication abilities of smartphones, for example, have undergone monumental changes over the past decade. However, global emphasis on creating and sustaining green environments is leading to a rapid and ongoing proliferation of edge computing systems and applications. As a broad spectrum of healthcare, home, and transport applications shift to the edge of the network, near-threshold computing (NTC) is emerging as one of the promising low-power computing platforms. An NTC device sets its supply voltage close to its threshold voltage, dramatically reducing the energy consumption. Despite showing substantial promise in terms of energy efficiency, NTC is yet to see widescale commercial adoption. This is because circuits and systems operating with NTC suffer from several problems, including increased sensitivity to process variation, reliability problems, performance degradation, and security vulnerabilities, to name a few. To realize its potential, we need designs, techniques, and solutions to overcome these challenges associated with NTC circuits and systems. A Process to Implement an Artificial Neural Network and Association Rules Techniques to Improve Asset Performance and Energy Efficiency
In this paper, we address the problem of asset performance monitoring, with the intention
of both detecting any potential reliability problem and predicting any loss of energy consumption
e ciency. This is an important concern for many industries and utilities with very intensive
capitalization in very long-lasting assets. To overcome this problem, in this paper we propose an
approach to combine an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) with Data Mining (DM) tools, specifically
with Association Rule (AR) Mining. The combination of these two techniques can now be done
using software which can handle large volumes of data (big data), but the process still needs to
ensure that the required amount of data will be available during the assets’ life cycle and that its
quality is acceptable. The combination of these two techniques in the proposed sequence di ers
from previous works found in the literature, giving researchers new options to face the problem.
Practical implementation of the proposed approach may lead to novel predictive maintenance models
(emerging predictive analytics) that may detect with unprecedented precision any asset’s lack of
performance and help manage assets’ O&M accordingly. The approach is illustrated using specific

Automatic Construction of Predictive Neuron Models through Large Scale Assimilation of Electrophysiological Data.
We report on the construction of neuron models by assimilating electrophysiological data with large-scale constrained nonlinear optimization. The method implements interior point line parameter search to determine parameters from the responses to intracellular current injections of zebra finch HVC neurons. We incorporated these parameters into a nine ionic channel conductance model to obtain completed models which we then use to predict the state of the neuron under arbitrary current stimulation. Each model was validated by successfully predicting the dynamics of the membrane potential induced by 20-50 different current protocols. The dispersion of parameters extracted from different assimilation windows was studied. Differences in constraints from current protocols, stochastic variability in neuron output, and noise behave as a residual temperature which broadens the global minimum of the objective function to an ellipsoid domain whose principal axes follow an exponentially decaying distribution. The maximum likelihood expectation of extracted parameters was found to provide an excellent approximation of the global minimum and yields highly consistent kinetics for both neurons studied. Large scale assimilation absorbs the intrinsic variability of electrophysiological data over wide assimilation windows. It builds models in an automatic manner treating all data as equal quantities and requiring minimal additional insight
A study and experiment plan for digital mobile communication via satellite
The viability of mobile communications is examined within the context of a frequency division multiple access, single channel per carrier satellite system emphasizing digital techniques to serve a large population of users. The intent is to provide the mobile users with a grade of service consistant with the requirements for remote, rural (perhaps emergency) voice communications, but which approaches toll quality speech. A traffic model is derived on which to base the determination of the required maximum number of satellite channels to provide the anticipated level of service. Various voice digitalization and digital modulation schemes are reviewed along with a general link analysis of the mobile system. Demand assignment multiple access considerations and analysis tradeoffs are presented. Finally, a completed configuration is described

Predictive power management for multi-core processors
textEnergy consumption by computing systems is rapidly increasing due to the growth of data centers and pervasive computing. In 2006 data center energy usage in the United States reached 61 billion kilowatt-hours (KWh) at an annual cost of 4.5 billion USD [Pl08]. It is projected to reach 100 billion KWh by 2011 at a cost of 7.4 billion USD. The nature of energy usage in these systems provides an opportunity to reduce consumption.
Specifically, the power and performance demand of computing systems vary widely in time and across workloads. This has led to the design of dynamically adaptive or power managed systems. At runtime, these systems can be reconfigured to provide optimal performance and power capacity to match workload demand. This causes the system to frequently be over or under provisioned. Similarly, the power demand of the system is difficult to account for. The aggregate power consumption of a system is composed of many heterogeneous systems, each with a unique power consumption characteristic.
This research addresses the problem of when to apply dynamic power management in multi-core processors by accounting for and predicting power and performance demand at the core-level. By tracking performance events at the processor core or thread-level, power consumption can be accounted for at each of the major components of the computing system through empirical, power models. This also provides accounting for individual components within a shared resource such as a power plane or top-level cache. This view of the system exposes the fundamental performance and power phase behavior, thus making prediction possible.
This dissertation also presents an extensive analysis of complete system power accounting for systems and workloads ranging from servers to desktops and laptops. The analysis leads to the development of a simple, effective prediction scheme for controlling power adaptations. The proposed Periodic Power Phase Predictor (PPPP) identifies patterns of activity in multi-core systems and predicts transitions between activity levels. This predictor is shown to increase performance and reduce power consumption compared to reactive, commercial power management schemes by achieving higher average frequency in active phases and lower average frequency in idle phases.Electrical and Computer Engineerin
Energy challenges for ICT
The energy consumption from the expanding use of information and communications technology (ICT) is unsustainable with present drivers, and it will impact heavily on the future climate change. However, ICT devices have the potential to contribute signi - cantly to the reduction of CO2 emission and enhance resource e ciency in other sectors, e.g., transportation (through intelligent transportation and advanced driver assistance systems and self-driving vehicles), heating (through smart building control), and manu- facturing (through digital automation based on smart autonomous sensors). To address the energy sustainability of ICT and capture the full potential of ICT in resource e - ciency, a multidisciplinary ICT-energy community needs to be brought together cover- ing devices, microarchitectures, ultra large-scale integration (ULSI), high-performance computing (HPC), energy harvesting, energy storage, system design, embedded sys- tems, e cient electronics, static analysis, and computation. Volume 2 – Conference
We are pleased to present the conference proceedings for the 12th edition of the International Fluid Power Conference (IFK). The IFK is one of the world’s most significant scientific conferences on fluid power control technology and systems. It offers a common platform for the presentation and discussion of trends and innovations to manufacturers, users and scientists. The Chair of Fluid-Mechatronic Systems at the TU Dresden is organizing and hosting the IFK for the sixth time. Supporting hosts are the Fluid Power Association of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA), Dresdner Verein zur Förderung der Fluidtechnik e. V. (DVF) and GWT-TUD GmbH. The organization and the conference location alternates every two years between the Chair of Fluid-Mechatronic Systems in Dresden and the Institute for Fluid Power Drives and Systems in Aachen. The symposium on the first day is dedicated to presentations focused on methodology and fundamental research. The two following conference days offer a wide variety of application and technology orientated papers about the latest state of the art in fluid power. It is this combination that makes the IFK a unique and excellent forum for the exchange of academic research and industrial application experience. A simultaneously ongoing exhibition offers the possibility to get product information and to have individual talks with manufacturers. The theme of the 12th IFK is “Fluid Power – Future Technology”, covering topics that enable the development of 5G-ready, cost-efficient and demand-driven structures, as well as individual decentralized drives. Another topic is the real-time data exchange that allows the application of numerous predictive maintenance strategies, which will significantly increase the availability of fluid power systems and their elements and ensure their improved lifetime performance. We create an atmosphere for casual exchange by offering a vast frame and cultural program.
