    Joint detection and localization of vessels at sea with a GNSS-Based multistatic radar

    This paper addresses the exploitation of global navigation satellite systems as opportunistic sources for the joint detection and localization of vessels at sea in a passive multistatic radar system. A single receiver mounted on a proper platform (e.g., a moored buoy) can collect the signals emitted by multiple navigation satellites and reflected from ship targets of interest. This paper puts forward a single-stage approach to jointly detect and localize the ship targets by making use of long integration times (tens of seconds) and properly exploiting the spatial diversity offered by such a configuration. A proper strategy is defined to form a long-time and multistatic range and Doppler (RD) map, where the total target power can be reinforced with respect to, in turn, the case in which the RD map is obtained over a short dwell and the case in which a single transmitter is employed. The exploitation of both the long integration time and the multiple transmitters can greatly enhance the performance of the system, allowing counteracting the low-power budget provided by the considered sources representing the main bottleneck of this technology. Moreover, the proposed single-stage approach can reach superior detection performance than a conventional two-stage process where peripheral decisions are taken at each bistatic link and subsequently the localization is achieved by multilateration methods. Theoretical and simulated performance analysis is proposed and also validated by means of experimental results considering Galileo transmitters and different types of targets of opportunity in different scenarios. Obtained results prove the effectiveness of the proposed method to provide detection and localization of ship targets of interest

    Experimental demonstration of ship target detection in GNSS-based passive radar combining target motion compensation and track-before-detect strategies

    This work discusses methods and experimental results on passive radar detection of moving ships using navigation satellites as transmitters of opportunity. The reported study highlights as the adoption of proper strategies combining target motion compensation and track-before-detect methods to achieve long time integration can be fruitfully exploited in GNSS-based passive radar for the detection of maritime targets. The proposed detection strategy reduces the sensitivity of long-time integration methods to the adopted motion models and can save the computational complexity, making it appealing for real-time implementations. Experimental results obtained in three different scenarios (port operations, navigation in open area, and river shipping) comprising maritime targets belonging to different classes show as this combined approach can be employed with success in several operative scenarios of practical interest for this technology

    Parametric Estimation Techniques for Space-Time Adaptive Processing with Applications for Airborne Bistatic Radar Systems

    This thesis considers parametric scenario based methods for Space-Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) in airborne bistatic radar systems. STAP is a multidimensional filtering technique used to mitigate the influence of interference and noise in a target detector. To be able to perform the mitigation, an accurate estimate is required of the associated space-time covariance matrix to the interference and noise distribution. In an airborne bistatic radar system geometry-induced effects due to the bistatic configuration introduces variations in the angle-Doppler domain over the range dimension. As a consequence of this, clutter observations of such systems may not follow the same distribution over the range dimension. This phenomena may affect the estimator of the space-time covariance matrix.\ua0In this thesis, we study a parametric scenario based approach to alleviate the geometry-induced effects. Thus, the considered framework is based on so called radar scenarios. A radar scenario is a description of the current state of the bistatic configuration, and is thus dependent on a few parameters connected to the two radar platforms which comprise the configuration. The scenario description can via a parametric model be used to represent the geometry-induced effects present in the system. In the first topic of this thesis, an investigation is conducted of the effects on scenario parameter residuals on the performance of a detector. Moreover, two methods are presented which estimate unknown scenario parameters from secondary observations. In the first estimation method, a maximum likelihood estimate is calculated for the scenario parameters using the most recent set of secondary data. In the second estimation method, a density is formed by combination of the likelihood associated with the most recent set of radar observations with a prior density obtained by propagation of previously considered scenario parameter estimates through a dynamical model of the scenario platforms motion over time. From the formed density a maximum a posteriori estimate of the scenario parameters can be derived. Thus, in the second estimation method, the radar scenario is tracked over time. Consequently, in the first topic of the thesis, the sensitivity between scenario parameters and detector performance is evaluated in various aspects, and two methods are investigated to estimate unknown scenario parameters from different radar scenarios.\ua0In the second part of the thesis, the scenario description is used to estimate a space-time covariance matrix and to derive a generalized likelihood ratio test for the airborne bistatic radar configuration. Consequently, for the covariance matrix estimate, the scenario description is used to derive a transformation matrix framework which aims to limit the non-stationary behavior of the secondary data observed by a bistatic radar system. Using the scenario based transformation framework, a set of non-stationary secondary data can be transformed to become more stationarily distributed after the transformation. A transformed set of secondary data can then be used in a conventional estimator to estimate the space-time covariance matrix. Furthermore, as the scenario description provides a representation of the geometry-induced effects in a bistatic configuration, the scenario description can be used to incorporate these effects into the design of a detector. Thus, a generalized likelihood ratio test is derived for an airborne bistatic radar configuration. Moreover, the presented detector is adaptive towards the strength of both the clutter interference and the thermal noise

    Spatial sampling of the thermospheric vertical wind field at auroral latitudes

    Results are presented from two nights of bistatic Doppler measurements of neutral thermospheric winds using Fabry!Perot spectrometers at Mawson and Davis stations in Antarctica. A scanning Doppler imager (SDI) at Mawson and a narrow-field Fabry-Perot spectrometer (FPS) at Davis have been used to estimate the vertical wind at three locations along the great circle joining the two stations, in addition to the vertical wind routinely observed above each station. These data were obtained from observations of the 630.0 nm airglow line of atomic oxygen, at a nominal altitude of 240 km. Low!resolution all-sky images produced by the Mawson SDI have been used to relate disturbances in the measured vertical wind field to auroral activity and divergence in the horizontal wind field. Correlated vertical wind responses were observed on a range of horizontal scales from ~150 to 480 km. In general, the behavior of the vertical wind was in agreement with earlier studies, with strong upward winds observed poleward of the optical aurora and sustained, though weak, downward winds observed early in the night. The relation between vertical wind and horizontal divergence was seen to follow the general trend predicted by Burnside et al. (1981), whereby upward vertical winds were associated with positive divergence and vice versa; however, a scale height approximately 3–4 times greater than that modeled by NRLMSISE-00 was required to best fit the data using this relation

    GNSS-based passive radar techniques for maritime surveillance

    The improvement of maritime traffic safety and security is a subject of growing interest, since the traffic is constantly increasing. In fact, a large number of human activities take place in maritime domain, varying from cruise and trading ships up to vessels involved in nefarious activities such as piracy, human smuggling or terrorist actions. The systems based on Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponder cannot cope with non-cooperative or non-equipped vessels that instead can be detected, tracked and identified by means of radar system. In particular, passive bistatic radar (PBR) systems can perform these tasks without a dedicated transmitter, since they exploit illuminators of opportunity as transmitters. The lack of a dedicated transmitter makes such systems low cost and suitable to be employed in areas where active sensors cannot be placed such as, for example, marine protected areas. Innovative solutions based on terrestrial transmitters have been considered in order to increase maritime safety and security, but these kinds of sources cannot guarantee a global coverage, such as in open sea. To overcome this problem, the exploitation of global navigation satellites system (GNSS) as transmitters of opportunity is a prospective solution. The global, reliable and persistent nature of these sources makes them potentially able to guarantee the permanent monitoring of both coastal and open sea areas. To this aim, this thesis addresses the exploitation of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) as transmitters of opportunity in passive bistatic radar (PBR) systems for maritime surveillance. The main limitation of this technology is the restricted power budget provided by navigation satellites, which makes it necessary to define innovative moving target detection techniques specifically tailored for the system under consideration. For this reason, this thesis puts forward long integration time techniques able to collect the signal energy over long time intervals (tens of seconds), allowing the retrieval of suitable levels of signal-to-disturbance ratios for detection purposes. The feasibility of this novel application is firstly investigated in a bistatic system configuration. A long integration time moving target detection technique working in bistatic range&Doppler plane is proposed and its effectiveness is proved against synthetic and experimental datasets. Subsequently the exploitation of multiple transmitters for the joint detection and localization of vessels at sea is also investigated. A single-stage approach to jointly detect and localize the ship targets by making use of long integration times (tens of seconds) and properly exploiting the spatial diversity offered by such a configuration is proposed. Furthermore, the potential of the system to extract information concerning the detected target characteristics for further target classification is assessed

    A Novel General Imaging Formation Algorithm for GNSS-Based Bistatic SAR.

    Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based bistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) recently plays a more and more significant role in remote sensing applications for its low-cost and real-time global coverage capability. In this paper, a general imaging formation algorithm was proposed for accurately and efficiently focusing GNSS-based bistatic SAR data, which avoids the interpolation processing in traditional back projection algorithms (BPAs). A two-dimensional point target spectrum model was firstly presented, and the bulk range cell migration correction (RCMC) was consequently derived for reducing range cell migration (RCM) and coarse focusing. As the bulk RCMC seriously changes the range history of the radar signal, a modified and much more efficient hybrid correlation operation was introduced for compensating residual phase errors. Simulation results were presented based on a general geometric topology with non-parallel trajectories and unequal velocities for both transmitter and receiver platforms, showing a satisfactory performance by the proposed method

    Space-time adaptive processing techniques for multichannel mobile passive radar

    Passive radar technology has reached a level of maturity for stationary sensor operations, widely proving the ability to detect, localize and track targets, by exploiting different kinds of illuminators of opportunity. In recent years, a renewed interest from both the scientific community and the industry has opened new perspectives and research areas. One of the most interesting and challenging ones is the use of passive radar sensors onboard moving platforms. This may offer a number of strategic advantages and extend the functionalities of passive radar to applications like synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging and ground moving target indication (GMTI). However, these benefits are paid in terms of motion-induced Doppler distortions of the received signals, which can adversely affect the system performance. In the case of surveillance applications, the detection of slowly moving targets is hindered by the Doppler-spread clutter returns, due to platform motion, and requires the use of space-time processing techniques, applied on signals collected by multiple receiving channels. Although in recent technical literature the feasibility of this concept has been preliminarily demonstrated, mobile passive radar is still far from being a mature technology and several issues still need to be addressed, mostly connected to the peculiar characteristics of the passive bistatic scenario. Specifically, significant limitations may come from the continuous and time-varying nature of the typical waveforms of opportunity, not suitable for conventional space-time processing techniques. Moreover, the low directivity of the practical receiving antennas, paired with a bistatic omni-directional illumination, further increases the clutter Doppler bandwidth and results in the simultaneous reception of non-negligible clutter contributions from a very wide angular sector. Such contributions are likely to undergo an angle-dependent imbalance across the receiving channels, exacerbated by the use of low-cost hardware. This thesis takes research on mobile passive radar for surveillance applications one step further, finding solutions to tackle the main limitations deriving from the passive bistatic framework, while preserving the paradigm of a simple system architecture. Attention is devoted to the development of signal processing algorithms and operational strategies for multichannel mobile passive radar, focusing on space-time processing techniques aimed at clutter cancellation and slowly moving target detection and localization. First, a processing scheme based on the displaced phase centre antenna (DPCA) approach is considered, for dual-channel systems. The scheme offers a simple and effective solution for passive radar GMTI, but its cancellation performance can be severely compromised by the presence of angle-dependent imbalances affecting the receiving channels. Therefore, it is paired with adaptive clutter-based calibration techniques, specifically devised for mobile passive radar. By exploiting the fine Doppler resolution offered by the typical long integration times and the one-to-one relationship between angle of arrival and Doppler frequency of the stationary scatterers, the devised techniques compensate for the angle-dependent imbalances and prove largely necessary to guarantee an effective clutter cancellation. Then, the attention is focused on space-time adaptive processing (STAP) techniques for multichannel mobile passive radar. In this case, the clutter cancellation capability relies on the adaptivity of the space-time filter, by resorting to an adjacent-bin post-Doppler (ABPD) approach. This allows to significantly reduce the size of the adaptive problem and intrinsically compensate for potential angle-dependent channel errors, by operating on a clutter subspace accounting for a limited angular sector. Therefore, ad hoc strategies are devised to counteract the effects of channel imbalance on the moving target detection and localization performance. By exploiting the clutter echoes to correct the spatial steering vector mismatch, the proposed STAP scheme is shown to enable an accurate estimation of target direction of arrival (DOA), which represents a critical task in system featuring few wide beam antennas. Finally, a dual cancelled channel STAP scheme is proposed, aimed at further reducing the system computational complexity and the number of required training data, compared to a conventional full-array solution. The proposed scheme simplifies the DOA estimation process and proves to be robust against the adaptivity losses commonly arising in a real bistatic clutter scenario, allowing effective operation even in the case of a limited sample support. The effectiveness of the techniques proposed in this work is validated by means of extensive simulated analyses and applications to real data, collected by an experimental multichannel passive radar installed on a moving platform and based on DVB-T transmission
