    Reviewing agent-based modelling of socio-ecosystems: a methodology for the analysis of climate change adaptation and sustainability

    The integrated - environmental, economic and social - analysis of climate change calls for a paradigm shift as it is fundamentally a problem of complex, bottom-up and multi-agent human behaviour. There is a growing awareness that global environmental change dynamics and the related socio-economic implications involve a degree of complexity that requires an innovative modelling of combined social and ecological systems. Climate change policy can no longer be addressed separately from a broader context of adaptation and sustainability strategies. A vast body of literature on agent-based modelling (ABM) shows its potential to couple social and environmental models, to incorporate the influence of micro-level decision making in the system dynamics and to study the emergence of collective responses to policies. However, there are few publications which concretely apply this methodology to the study of climate change related issues. The analysis of the state of the art reported in this paper supports the idea that today ABM is an appropriate methodology for the bottom-up exploration of climate policies, especially because it can take into account adaptive behaviour and heterogeneity of the system's components.Review, Agent-Based Modelling, Socio-Ecosystems, Climate Change, Adaptation, Complexity.

This methodology provides present-day agent-based models with a sound and proper insight as to the behavior of social agents — an insight that statistical data often fall short of providing at least at a micro level and for hidden and sensitive populations.     Does Empirical Embeddedness Matter? Methodological Issues on Agent-Based Models for Analytical Social Science

    The paper deals with the use of empirical data in social science agent-based models. Agent-based models are too often viewed just as highly abstract thought experiments conducted in artificial worlds, in which the purpose is to generate and not to test theoretical hypotheses in an empirical way. On the contrary, they should be viewed as models that need to be embedded into empirical data both to allow the calibration and the validation of their findings. As a consequence, the search for strategies to find and extract data from reality, and integrate agent-based models with other traditional empirical social science methods, such as qualitative, quantitative, experimental and participatory methods, becomes a fundamental step of the modelling process. The paper argues that the characteristics of the empirical target matter. According to characteristics of the target, ABMs can be differentiated into case-based models, typifications and theoretical abstractions.     Agent-based Computational Economics: a Methodological Appraisal

    This paper is an overview of "Agent-based Computational Economics (ACE)", an emerging approach to the study of decentralized market economies, in methodological perspective. It summarizes similarities and differences with respect to conventional economic models, outlines the unique methodological characteristics of this approach, and discusses its implications for economic methodology as a whole. While ACE rejoins the reflection on the unintended social consequences of purposeful individual action which is constitutive of economics as a discipline, the paper shows that it complements state-of the-art research in experimental and behavioral economics. In particular, the methods and techniques of ACE have reinforced the laboratory finding that fundamental economic results rely less on rational choice theory than is usually assumed, and have provided insight into the importance of market structures and rules in addition to individual choice. In addition, ACE has enlarged the range of inter-individual interactions that are of interest for economists. In this perspective, ACE provides the economist‘s toolbox with valuable supplements to existing economic techniques rather than proposing a radical alternative.     Sustainability assessment of housing developments : a new methodology

    Afin de combattre la dégradation rapide des écosystèmes mondiaux ainsi que l'épuisement des ressources naturelles, les gouvernements et les autorités de planification recherchent des formes de développement plus durables. La nécessité d'évaluer la «soutenabilité» des propositions de développement est ainsi de grande importance pour la politique et les décideurs. Cependant, des méthodes efficaces pour évaluer la durabilité globale des développements de logement (proposés ou existants) ne sont pas encore établies. Les objectifs de ces recherches adressent ce problème en présentant une nouvelle méthodologie conçue pour évaluer la durabilité des systèmes complexes de développement de logement. Une méthode pour évaluer des indicateurs de durabilité sur une «échelle de soutenabilité», basée sur des centiles d'une population avec l'utilisation de ressource audessus d'un seuil soutenable, a été développée. Cette méthode a été couplée à une technique pour modéliser les systèmes de développement complexes de logement en utilisant la simulation multi-agent. La méthodologie a été mise en pratique dans un cas d'étude du groupe de logements, Christie Walk, situé au centre-ville d'Adélaïde en Australie. Les résultats de cette évaluation ont demontré que Christie Walk est plus soutenable que la plupart de la zone métropolitaine d'Adélaïde. Les resultats des analyses de scénario montrent aussi l'importance d'une bonne infrastructure et conception des développements pour réduire les impacts du comportement humain sur la durabilité des logements. On envisage que cette nouvelle méthodologie, qui couple l'évaluation de la durabilité avec une technique de modélisation integrée, fournira une base fondementale pour résoudre plusieurs des défis auxquels font actuellement face les chercheurs en développement durable, les décideurs et les autorités de planification des environnements urbains en Australie et dans le reste du monde. / In order to combat the rapid degradation of the world's ecosystems and depletion of natural resources, governments and planning authorities are searching for more sustainable forms of development. The need to assess the sustainability of development proposals is thus of great importance to policy and decision makers. However, effective methods of assessing the overall sustainability of housing developments (proposed or existing) have yet to be established. This research aims to address this problem by presenting a new methodology to assess the sustainability of housing development systems. The methodology uses indicators with a common Sustainability Scale which is derived from percentiles of a population with resource use above a predetermined sustainable level, and has been coupled with a technique for modelling complex housing development systems using multiagent based simulation. The methodology was shown to be operational in the case study application of the Christie Walk housing development in inner-city Adelaide, Australia. The results of the assessment showed that the development compared favourably to the rest of the Adelaide metropolitan area. The case study also highlighted, through behavioural scenario analyses, the importance of good infrastructure and design in reducing the impacts of human behaviour on housing development sustainability. It is envisaged that this new methodology of combining sustainability assessment with an integrated modelling technique will provide the basis for a solution to many of the challenges currently facing sustainability researchers, policy makers and planning authorities of urban environments both in Australia and world wide

    Traditional (i.e. analytical) modelling practices in the social sciences rely on a very well established, although implicit, methodological protocol, both with respect to the way models are presented and to the kinds of analysis that are performed. Unfortunately, computer-simulated models often lack such a reference to an accepted methodological standard. This is one of the main reasons for the scepticism among mainstream social scientists that results in low acceptance of papers with agent-based methodology in the top journals. We identify some methodological pitfalls that, according to us, are common in papers employing agent-based simulations, and propose appropriate solutions. We discuss each issue with reference to a general characterization of dynamic micro models, which encompasses both analytical and simulation models. In the way, we also clarify some confusing terminology.
