    Integration of decision support systems to improve decision support performance

    Decision support system (DSS) is a well-established research and development area. Traditional isolated, stand-alone DSS has been recently facing new challenges. In order to improve the performance of DSS to meet the challenges, research has been actively carried out to develop integrated decision support systems (IDSS). This paper reviews the current research efforts with regard to the development of IDSS. The focus of the paper is on the integration aspect for IDSS through multiple perspectives, and the technologies that support this integration. More than 100 papers and software systems are discussed. Current research efforts and the development status of IDSS are explained, compared and classified. In addition, future trends and challenges in integration are outlined. The paper concludes that by addressing integration, better support will be provided to decision makers, with the expectation of both better decisions and improved decision making processes

    Integration of Data Mining and Data Warehousing: a practical methodology

    The ever growing repository of data in all fields poses new challenges to the modern analytical systems. Real-world datasets, with mixed numeric and nominal variables, are difficult to analyze and require effective visual exploration that conveys semantic relationships of data. Traditional data mining techniques such as clustering clusters only the numeric data. Little research has been carried out in tackling the problem of clustering high cardinality nominal variables to get better insight of underlying dataset. Several works in the literature proved the likelihood of integrating data mining with warehousing to discover knowledge from data. For the seamless integration, the mined data has to be modeled in form of a data warehouse schema. Schema generation process is complex manual task and requires domain and warehousing familiarity. Automated techniques are required to generate warehouse schema to overcome the existing dependencies. To fulfill the growing analytical needs and to overcome the existing limitations, we propose a novel methodology in this paper that permits efficient analysis of mixed numeric and nominal data, effective visual data exploration, automatic warehouse schema generation and integration of data mining and warehousing. The proposed methodology is evaluated by performing case study on real-world data set. Results show that multidimensional analysis can be performed in an easier and flexible way to discover meaningful knowledge from large datasets

    A Semantic Grid Oriented to E-Tourism

    With increasing complexity of tourism business models and tasks, there is a clear need of the next generation e-Tourism infrastructure to support flexible automation, integration, computation, storage, and collaboration. Currently several enabling technologies such as semantic Web, Web service, agent and grid computing have been applied in the different e-Tourism applications, however there is no a unified framework to be able to integrate all of them. So this paper presents a promising e-Tourism framework based on emerging semantic grid, in which a number of key design issues are discussed including architecture, ontologies structure, semantic reconciliation, service and resource discovery, role based authorization and intelligent agent.     IC-Service: A Service-Oriented Approach to the Development of Recommendation Systems

    Recommendation systems have proven to be useful in various application domains. However, current solutions are usually ad-hoc systems which are tightly-coupled with the application domain. We present the IC-Service, a recommendation service that can be included in any system in a loosely coupled way. The implementation follows the principles of service oriented computing and provides a solution to various problems arising in recommendation systems, e.g. to the problem of meta-recommendation systems development. Moreover, when properly configured, the IC-Service can be used by different applications (clients), and several independent instances of the IC-Service can collaborate to produce better recommendations. Service architecture and communication protocols are presented. The paper describes also ongoing work and applications based on the IC-Service

    A novel multipath-transmission supported software defined wireless network architecture

    The inflexible management and operation of today\u27s wireless access networks cannot meet the increasingly growing specific requirements, such as high mobility and throughput, service differentiation, and high-level programmability. In this paper, we put forward a novel multipath-transmission supported software-defined wireless network architecture (MP-SDWN), with the aim of achieving seamless handover, throughput enhancement, and flow-level wireless transmission control as well as programmable interfaces. In particular, this research addresses the following issues: 1) for high mobility and throughput, multi-connection virtual access point is proposed to enable multiple transmission paths simultaneously over a set of access points for users and 2) wireless flow transmission rules and programmable interfaces are implemented into mac80211 subsystem to enable service differentiation and flow-level wireless transmission control. Moreover, the efficiency and flexibility of MP-SDWN are demonstrated in the performance evaluations conducted on a 802.11 based-testbed, and the experimental results show that compared to regular WiFi, our proposed MP-SDWN architecture achieves seamless handover and multifold throughput improvement, and supports flow-level wireless transmission control for different applications

    The Semantic Grid: A future e-Science infrastructure

    e-Science offers a promising vision of how computer and communication technology can support and enhance the scientific process. It does this by enabling scientists to generate, analyse, share and discuss their insights, experiments and results in an effective manner. The underlying computer infrastructure that provides these facilities is commonly referred to as the Grid. At this time, there are a number of grid applications being developed and there is a whole raft of computer technologies that provide fragments of the necessary functionality. However there is currently a major gap between these endeavours and the vision of e-Science in which there is a high degree of easy-to-use and seamless automation and in which there are flexible collaborations and computations on a global scale. To bridge this practice–aspiration divide, this paper presents a research agenda whose aim is to move from the current state of the art in e-Science infrastructure, to the future infrastructure that is needed to support the full richness of the e-Science vision. Here the future e-Science research infrastructure is termed the Semantic Grid (Semantic Grid to Grid is meant to connote a similar relationship to the one that exists between the Semantic Web and the Web). In particular, we present a conceptual architecture for the Semantic Grid. This architecture adopts a service-oriented perspective in which distinct stakeholders in the scientific process, represented as software agents, provide services to one another, under various service level agreements, in various forms of marketplace. We then focus predominantly on the issues concerned with the way that knowledge is acquired and used in such environments since we believe this is the key differentiator between current grid endeavours and those envisioned for the Semantic Grid

    Improving Customer Relationship Management through Integrated Mining of Heterogeneous Data

    The volume of information available on the Internet and corporate intranets continues to increase along with the corresponding increase in the data (structured and unstructured) stored by many organizations. In customer relationship management, information is the raw material for decision making. For this to be effective, there is need to discover knowledge from the seamless integration of structured and unstructured data for completeness and comprehensiveness which is the main focus of this paper. In the integration process, the structured component is selected based on the resulting keywords from the unstructured text preprocessing process, and association rules is generated based on the modified GARW (Generating Association Rules Based on Weighting Scheme) Algorithm. The main contribution of this technique is that the unstructured component of the integration is based on Information retrieval technique which is based on content similarity of XML (Extensible Markup Language) document. This similarity is based on the combination of syntactic and semantic relevance. Experiments carried out revealed that the extracted association rules contain important features which form a worthy platform for making effective decisions as regards customer relationship management. The performance of the integration approach is also compared with a similar approach which uses just syntactic relevance in its information extraction process to reveal a significant reduction in the large itemsets and execution time. This leads to reduction in rules generated to more interesting ones due to the semantic clustering of XML documents introduced into the improved integrated mining technique
