Robust Model Predictive Control for Linear Parameter Varying Systems along with Exploration of its Application in Medical Mobile Robots
This thesis seeks to develop a robust model predictive controller (MPC) for Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) systems. LPV models based on input-output display are employed. We aim to improve robust MPC methods for LPV systems with an input-output display. This improvement will be examined from two perspectives. First, the system must be stable in conditions of uncertainty (in signal scheduling or due to disturbance) and perform well in both tracking and regulation problems. Secondly, the proposed method should be practical, i.e., it should have a reasonable computational load and not be conservative.
Firstly, an interpolation approach is utilized to minimize the conservativeness of the MPC. The controller is calculated as a linear combination of a set of offline predefined control laws. The coefficients of these offline controllers are derived from a real-time optimization problem. The control gains are determined to ensure stability and increase the terminal set.
Secondly, in order to test the system's robustness to external disturbances, a free control move was added to the control law. Also, a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) algorithm is applied for online optimization, showing that this optimization method has better speed and accuracy than traditional algorithms. The proposed controller was compared with two methods (robust MPC and MPC with LPV model based on input-output) in reference tracking and disturbance rejection scenarios. It was shown that the proposed method works well in both parts. However, two other methods could not deal with the disturbance.
Thirdly, a support vector machine was introduced to identify the input-output LPV model to estimate the output. The estimated model was compared with the actual nonlinear system outputs, and the identification was shown to be effective. As a consequence, the controller can accurately follow the reference.
Finally, an interpolation-based MPC with free control moves is implemented for a wheeled mobile robot in a hospital setting, where an RNN solves the online optimization problem. The controller was compared with a robust MPC and MPC-LPV in reference tracking, disturbance rejection, online computational load, and region of attraction. The results indicate that our proposed method surpasses and can navigate quickly and reliably while avoiding obstacles
Direct data-driven control of constrained linear parameter-varying systems: A hierarchical approach
In many nonlinear control problems, the plant can be accurately described by
a linear model whose operating point depends on some measurable variables,
called scheduling signals. When such a linear parameter-varying (LPV) model of
the open-loop plant needs to be derived from a set of data, several issues
arise in terms of parameterization, estimation, and validation of the model
before designing the controller. Moreover, the way modeling errors affect the
closed-loop performance is still largely unknown in the LPV context. In this
paper, a direct data-driven control method is proposed to design LPV
controllers directly from data without deriving a model of the plant. The main
idea of the approach is to use a hierarchical control architecture, where the
inner controller is designed to match a simple and a-priori specified
closed-loop behavior. Then, an outer model predictive controller is synthesized
to handle input/output constraints and to enhance the performance of the inner
loop. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated by means of a simulation
and an experimental example. Practical implementation issues are also

Model predictive control based on LPV models with parameter-varying delays

The proposed control approach allows the controller to accommodate the scheduling parameters and delay change. By computing the prediction of the state variables and delay along a prediction time horizon, the system model can be modified according to the evaluation of the estimated state and delay at each time instant. Moreover, the solution of the optimization problem associated with the MPC design is achieved by solving a series of Quadratic Programming (QP) problem at each time instant. This iterative approach reduces the computational burden compared to the solution of a non-linear optimization problem. A review of convex approaches for control, observation and safety of linear parameter varying and Takagi-Sugeno systems
This paper provides a review about the concept of convex systems based on Takagi-Sugeno, linear parameter varying (LPV) and quasi-LPV modeling. These paradigms are capable of hiding the nonlinearities by means of an equivalent description which uses a set of linear models interpolated by appropriately defined weighing functions. Convex systems have become very popular since they allow applying extended linear techniques based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to complex nonlinear systems. This survey aims at providing the reader with a significant overview of the existing LMI-based techniques for convex systems in the fields of control, observation and safety. Firstly, a detailed review of stability, feedback, tracking and model predictive control (MPC) convex controllers is considered. Secondly, the problem of state estimation is addressed through the design of proportional, proportional-integral, unknown input and descriptor observers. Robust nonlinear control of vectored thrust aircraft
An interdisciplinary program in robust control for nonlinear systems with applications to a variety of engineering problems is outlined. Major emphasis will be placed on flight control, with both experimental and analytical studies. This program builds on recent new results in control theory for stability, stabilization, robust stability, robust performance, synthesis, and model reduction in a unified framework using Linear Fractional Transformations (LFT's), Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI's), and the structured singular value micron. Most of these new advances have been accomplished by the Caltech controls group independently or in collaboration with researchers in other institutions. These recent results offer a new and remarkably unified framework for all aspects of robust control, but what is particularly important for this program is that they also have important implications for system identification and control of nonlinear systems. This combines well with Caltech's expertise in nonlinear control theory, both in geometric methods and methods for systems with constraints and saturations
From Nonlinear Identification to Linear Parameter Varying Models: Benchmark Examples
Linear parameter-varying (LPV) models form a powerful model class to analyze
and control a (nonlinear) system of interest. Identifying a LPV model of a
nonlinear system can be challenging due to the difficulty of selecting the
scheduling variable(s) a priori, which is quite challenging in case a first
principles based understanding of the system is unavailable.
This paper presents a systematic LPV embedding approach starting from
nonlinear fractional representation models. A nonlinear system is identified
first using a nonlinear block-oriented linear fractional representation (LFR)
model. This nonlinear LFR model class is embedded into the LPV model class by
factorization of the static nonlinear block present in the model. As a result
of the factorization a LPV-LFR or a LPV state-space model with an affine
dependency results. This approach facilitates the selection of the scheduling
variable from a data-driven perspective. Furthermore the estimation is not
affected by measurement noise on the scheduling variables, which is often left
untreated by LPV model identification methods.
The proposed approach is illustrated on two well-established nonlinear

A Comparison of LPV Gain Scheduling and Control Contraction Metrics for Nonlinear Control
Gain-scheduled control based on linear parameter-varying (LPV) models derived
from local linearizations is a widespread nonlinear technique for tracking
time-varying setpoints. Recently, a nonlinear control scheme based on Control
Contraction Metrics (CCMs) has been developed to track arbitrary admissible
trajectories. This paper presents a comparison study of these two approaches.
We show that the CCM based approach is an extended gain-scheduled control
scheme which achieves global reference-independent stability and performance
through an exact control realization which integrates a series of local LPV
controllers on a particular path between the current and reference states.Comment: IFAC LPVS 201
Real-time predictive control for SI engines using linear parameter-varying models
As a response to the ever more stringent emission standards, automotive engines have become more complex with more actuators. The traditional approach of using many single-input single output controllers has become more difficult to design, due to complex system interactions and constraints. Model predictive control offers an attractive solution to this problem because of its ability to handle multi-input multi-output systems with constraints on inputs and outputs. The application of model based predictive control to automotive engines is explored below and a multivariable engine torque and air-fuel ratio controller is described using a quasi-LPV model predictive control methodology. Compared with the traditional approach of using SISO controllers to control air fuel ratio and torque separately, an advantage is that the interactions between the air and fuel paths are handled explicitly. Furthermore, the quasi-LPV model-based approach is capable of capturing the model nonlinearities within a tractable linear structure, and it has the potential of handling hard actuator constraints. The control design approach was applied to a 2010 Chevy Equinox with a 2.4L gasoline engine and simulation results are presented. Since computational complexity has been the main limiting factor for fast real time applications of MPC, we present various simplifications to reduce computational requirements.
