    Public Safety Radio System

    The goal of this project was to create a Public Safety Integration Center (PSIC). The PSIC is a radio laboratory whose goal is to encourage the betterment of public safety communications and interoperability. It allows students to perform radio related projects, hardware manufacturers to demonstrate their equipment, and radio equipment to be tested with respect to integration and interoperability. In order to achieve this goal, equipment donated by SAIC was studied, reverse engineered, and reconfigured to suit the needs of the PSIC

    Adaptive DS-CDMA multiuser detection for time variant frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel

    The current digital wireless mobile system such as IS-95, which is based on direct sequence Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA) technology, will not be able to meet the growing demands for multimedia service due to low information exchanging rate. Its capacity is also limited by multiple accessed interference (MAI) signals. This work focuses on the development of adaptive algorithms for multiuser detection (MUD) and interference suppression for wideband direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems over time-variant frequency selective fading channels. In addition, channel acquisition and delay estimation techniques are developed to combat the uncertainty introduced by the wireless propagation channel. This work emphasizes fast and simple techniques that can meet practical needs for high data rate signal detection. Most existing literature is not suitable for the large delay spread in wideband systems due to high computational/ hardware complexity. A de-biasing decorrelator is developed whose computational complexity is greatly reduced without sacrificing performance. An adaptive bootstrap symbolbased signal separator is also proposed for a time-variant channel. These detectors achieve MUD for asynchronous, large delay spread, fading channels without training sequences. To achieve high data rate communication, a finite impulse response (FIR) filter based detector is presented for M-ary QAM modulated signals in a multipath Rayleigh fading channel. It is shown that the proposed detector provides a stable performance for QAM signal detection with unknown fading and phase shift. It is also shown that this detector can be easily extended to the reception of any M-ary quadrature modulated signal. A minimum variance decorrelating (MVD) receiver with adaptive channel estimator is presented in this dissertation. It provides comparable performance to a linear MMSE receiver even in a deep fading environment and can be implemented blindly. Using the MVD receiver as a building-block, an adaptive multistage parallel interference cancellation (PIC) scheme and a successive interference cancellation (SIC) scheme were developed. The total number of stages is kept at a minimum as a result of the accurate estimating of the interfering users at the earliest stages, which reduces the implementation complexity, as well as the processing delay. Jointly with the MVD receiver, a new transmit diversity (TD) scheme, called TD-MVD, is proposed. This scheme improves the performance without increasing the bandwidth. Unlike other TD techniques, this TDMVD scheme has the inherent advantage to overcome asynchronous multipath transmission. It brings flexibility in the design of TD antenna systems without restrict signal coordination among those multiple transmissions, and applicable for both existing and next generation of CDMA systems. A maximum likelihood based delay and channel estimation algorithm with reduced computational complexity is proposed. This algorithm uses a diagonal simplicity technique as well as the asymptotically uncorrelated property of the received signal in the frequency domain. In combination with oversampling, this scheme does not suffer from a singularity problem and the performance quickly approaches the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) while maintaining a computational complexity that is as low as the order of the signal dimension

    Design of implicit routing protocols for large scale mobile wireless sensor networks

Schemes developed to manage mobility in other mobile networking implementations do not translate effectively to WSNs as the system design parameters are markedly different. Thus this research focuses on the issues of mobility and scalability in order to enable the full potential of WSNs to self-organise and co-operate and in so doing, meet the requirements of a rich mix of applications. In the goal of designing efficient, reliable routing protocols for large scale mobile WSN applications, this work lays the foundation by firstly presenting a strong case supported by extensive simulations, for the use of implicit connections. Then two novel implicit routing protocols - Virtual Grid Paging (VGP) and Virtual Zone Registration and Paging (VZRP) - that treat packet routing from node mobility and network scalability viewpoints are designed and analysed. Implicit routing exploits the connection availability and diversity in the underlying network to provide benefits such as fault tolerance, overhead control and improvement in QoS (Quality of Service) such as delay.     Design and Analysis of Forward Error Control Coding and Signaling for Guaranteeing QoS in Wireless Broadcast Systems

    Broadcasting systems are networks where the transmission is received by several terminals. Generally broadcast receivers are passive devices in the network, meaning that they do not interact with the transmitter. Providing a certain Quality of Service (QoS) for the receivers in heterogeneous reception environment with no feedback is not an easy task. Forward error control coding can be used for protection against transmission errors to enhance the QoS for broadcast services. For good performance in terrestrial wireless networks, diversity should be utilized. The diversity is utilized by application of interleaving together with the forward error correction codes. In this dissertation the design and analysis of forward error control and control signalling for providing QoS in wireless broadcasting systems are studied. Control signaling is used in broadcasting networks to give the receiver necessary information on how to connect to the network itself and how to receive the services that are being transmitted. Usually control signalling is considered to be transmitted through a dedicated path in the systems. Therefore, the relationship of the signaling and service data paths should be considered early in the design phase. Modeling and simulations are used in the case studies of this dissertation to study this relationship. This dissertation begins with a survey on the broadcasting environment and mechanisms for providing QoS therein. Then case studies present analysis and design of such mechanisms in real systems. The mechanisms for providing QoS considering signaling and service data paths and their relationship at the DVB-H link layer are analyzed as the first case study. In particular the performance of different service data decoding mechanisms and optimal signaling transmission parameter selection are presented. The second case study investigates the design of signaling and service data paths for the more modern DVB-T2 physical layer. Furthermore, by comparing the performances of the signaling and service data paths by simulations, configuration guidelines for the DVB-T2 physical layer signaling are given. The presented guidelines can prove useful when configuring DVB-T2 transmission networks. Finally, recommendations for the design of data and signalling paths are given based on findings from the case studies. The requirements for the signaling design should be derived from the requirements for the main services. Generally, these requirements for signaling should be more demanding as the signaling is the enabler for service reception.Siirretty Doriast

    Spatial diversity in MIMO communication systems with distributed or co-located antennas

    The use of multiple antennas in wireless communication systems has gained much attention during the last decade. It was shown that such multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems offer huge advantages over single-antenna systems. Typically, quite restrictive assumptions are made concerning the spacing of the individual antenna elements. On the one hand, it is typically assumed that the antenna elements at transmitter and receiver are co-located, i.e., they belong to some sort of antenna array. On the other hand, it is often assumed that the antenna spacings are sufficiently large, so as to justify the assumption of independent fading. In this thesis, the above assumptions are relaxed. In the first part, it is shown that MIMO systems with distributed antennas and MIMO systems with co-located antennas can be treated in a single, unifying framework. In the second part this fact is utilized, in order to develop appropriate transmit power allocation strategies for co-located and distributed MIMO systems. Finally, the third part focuses on specific synchronization problems that are of interest for distributed MIMO systems

    Structured film-viewing preferences and practices : a quantitative analysis of hierarchies in screen and content selection amongst young people in Flanders

    Aleit Veenstra, Philippe Meers and Daniel Biltereyst address a specific segment of a typical small-market audience—Flemish youth film viewers. Their study “Structured Film Viewing Preferences and Practices: A Quantitative Analysis of Hierarchies in Screen and Content Selection among Young People in Flanders” deals with one of the symptomatic problems of the era of convergent audiences, the multiplication of screens used for domestic consumption of audiovisual content. Building an intriguing empirical design, Veenstra and her colleagues aim to identify patterns of screen selection and their relation to the perceived value of Hollywood, European and domestic Flemish films. Their conclusion is that there are well-articulated hierarchies applied by the audience members in the selection of both film titles and reception screens and that, to put it simply, in the case of screens, size matters
