    Protection system architecture for all-electric aircraft

    To reduce emissions from the aviation industry and meet the targets set by different countries, research has been focused on investigating all-electric aircraft. To make this vision practical, superconducting machines are expected to power the propellers, as they are half the size and a third the weight of conventional machines. The main purpose of this paper is to do a higher-level study of a reliable holistic protection system for all-electric aircraft; that can reduce heat leakage and be able to detect faults reliably. Thus, three main protection systems were investigated; 1) cryogenic voltage source converter superconducting magnetic energy storage system (VSC-SMES), 2) cryogenic dc breaker integrated with superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL), and 3) machine learning algorithm for fault detection. By immersing the protection system at cryogenic temperature, the paper has shown that passive leakage can be eliminated, and thus more energy can be saved for the fuel cell. The paper has also demonstrated that using machine learning for the SFCL-dc-breaker system can consistently eliminate faults and protect the system

    A multi-terminal HVdc grid topology proposal for offshore wind farms

Although various topologies of multi-terminal high voltage direct current (MT-HVdc) transmission systems are available in the literature, most of them are prone to loss of flexibility, reliability, stability, and redundancy in the events of grid contingencies. In this research, two new wind farms and substation ring topology (2WF-SSRT) are designed and proposed to address the aforementioned shortcomings. The objective of this paper is to investigate MT-HVdc grid topologies for integrating large offshore wind farms with an emphasis on power loss in the event of a dc grid fault or mainland alternating current (ac)grid abnormality. Standards and control of voltage source converter (VSC) based MT-HVdc grids are defined and discussed. High voltage dc switch-gear and dc circuit topologies are appraised based on the necessity of dc cables, HVdc circuit breakers, and extra offshore platforms. In this paper, the proposed topology is analyzed and compared with the formers for number and ratings of offshore substations, dc breakers, ultra-fast mechanical actuators, dc circuits, cost, flexibility, utilization, and redundancy of HVdc links. Coordinated operation of various topologies is assessed and compared with respect to the designed control scheme via a developed EMTDC/PSCAD simulation platform considering three fault scenarios: dc fault on transmission link connecting the wind farm to mainland power converters, dc fault within substation ring of VSC-HVdc stations, and ultimate disconnection of grid side VSC station. Results show that 2WF-SSRT is a promising topology for future MT-HVdc grids

    HVDC transmission : technology review, market trends and future outlook

    HVDC systems are playing an increasingly significant role in energy transmission due to their technical and economic superiority over HVAC systems for long distance transmission. HVDC is preferable beyond 300–800 km for overhead point-to-point transmission projects and for the cable based interconnection or the grid integration of remote offshore wind farms beyond 50–100 km. Several HVDC review papers exist in literature but often focus on specific geographic locations or system components. In contrast, this paper presents a detailed, up-to-date, analysis and assessment of HVDC transmission systems on a global scale, targeting expert and general audience alike. The paper covers the following aspects: technical and economic comparison of HVAC and HVDC systems; investigation of international HVDC market size, conditions, geographic sparsity of the technology adoption, as well as the main suppliers landscape; and high-level comparisons and analysis of HVDC system components such as Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) and Line Commutated Converters (LCCs), etc. The presented analysis are supported by practical case studies from existing projects in an effort to reveal the complex technical and economic considerations, factors and rationale involved in the evaluation and selection of transmission system technology for a given project. The contemporary operational challenges such as the ownership of Multi-Terminal DC (MTDC) networks are also discussed. Subsequently, the required development factors, both technically and regulatory, for proper MTDC networks operation are highlighted, including a future outlook of different HVDC system components. Collectively, the role of HVDC transmission in achieving national renewable energy targets in light of the Paris agreement commitments is highlighted with relevant examples of potential HVDC corridors
