Growing a Tree in the Forest: Constructing Folksonomies by Integrating Structured Metadata
Many social Web sites allow users to annotate the content with descriptive
metadata, such as tags, and more recently to organize content hierarchically.
These types of structured metadata provide valuable evidence for learning how a
community organizes knowledge. For instance, we can aggregate many personal
hierarchies into a common taxonomy, also known as a folksonomy, that will aid
users in visualizing and browsing social content, and also to help them in
organizing their own content. However, learning from social metadata presents
several challenges, since it is sparse, shallow, ambiguous, noisy, and
inconsistent. We describe an approach to folksonomy learning based on
relational clustering, which exploits structured metadata contained in personal
hierarchies. Our approach clusters similar hierarchies using their structure
and tag statistics, then incrementally weaves them into a deeper, bushier tree.
We study folksonomy learning using social metadata extracted from the
photo-sharing site Flickr, and demonstrate that the proposed approach addresses
the challenges. Moreover, comparing to previous work, the approach produces

Knowledge Base Enrichment by Relation Learning from Social Tagging Data
There has been considerable interest in transforming unstructured social tagging data into structured knowledge for semantic-based retrieval and recommendation. Research in this line mostly exploits data co-occurrence and often overlooks the complex and ambiguous meanings of tags. Furthermore, there have been few comprehensive evaluation studies regarding the quality of the discovered knowledge. We propose a supervised learning method to discover subsumption relations from tags. The key to this method is quantifying the probabilistic association among tags to better characterise their relations. We further develop an algorithm to organise tags into hierarchies based on the learned relations. Experiments were conducted using a large, publicly available dataset, Bibsonomy, and three popular, human-engineered or data-driven knowledge bases: DBpedia, Microsoft Concept Graph, and ACM Computing Classification System. We performed a comprehensive evaluation using different strategies: relation-level, ontology-level, and knowledge base enrichment based evaluation. The results clearly show that the proposed method can extract knowledge of better quality than the existing methods against the gold standard knowledge bases. The proposed approach can also enrich knowledge bases with new subsumption relations, having the potential to significantly reduce time and human effort for knowledge base maintenance and ontology evolution
Comparing the hierarchy of author given tags and repository given tags in a large document archive
Folksonomies - large databases arising from collaborative tagging of items by
independent users - are becoming an increasingly important way of categorizing
information. In these systems users can tag items with free words, resulting in
a tripartite item-tag-user network. Although there are no prescribed relations
between tags, the way users think about the different categories presumably has
some built in hierarchy, in which more special concepts are descendants of some
more general categories. Several applications would benefit from the knowledge
of this hierarchy. Here we apply a recent method to check the differences and
similarities of hierarchies resulting from tags given by independent
individuals and from tags given by a centrally managed repository system. The
results from out method showed substantial differences between the lower part
of the hierarchies, and in contrast, a relatively high similarity at the top of
the hierarchies.Comment: 10 page
TiFi: Taxonomy Induction for Fictional Domains [Extended version]
Taxonomies are important building blocks of structured knowledge bases, and their construction from text sources and Wikipedia has received much attention. In this paper we focus on the construction of taxonomies for fictional domains, using noisy category systems from fan wikis or text extraction as input. Such fictional domains are archetypes of entity universes that are poorly covered by Wikipedia, such as also enterprise-specific knowledge bases or highly specialized verticals. Our fiction-targeted approach, called TiFi, consists of three phases: (i) category cleaning, by identifying candidate categories that truly represent classes in the domain of interest, (ii) edge cleaning, by selecting subcategory relationships that correspond to class subsumption, and (iii) top-level construction, by mapping classes onto a subset of high-level WordNet categories. A comprehensive evaluation shows that TiFi is able to construct taxonomies for a diverse range of fictional domains such as Lord of the Rings, The Simpsons or Greek Mythology with very high precision and that it outperforms state-of-the-art baselines for taxonomy induction by a substantial margin
A Call to Arms: Revisiting Database Design
Good database design is crucial to obtain a sound, consistent database, and -
in turn - good database design methodologies are the best way to achieve the
right design. These methodologies are taught to most Computer Science
undergraduates, as part of any Introduction to Database class. They can be
considered part of the "canon", and indeed, the overall approach to database
design has been unchanged for years. Moreover, none of the major database
research assessments identify database design as a strategic research
direction.
Should we conclude that database design is a solved problem?
Our thesis is that database design remains a critical unsolved problem.
Hence, it should be the subject of more research. Our starting point is the
observation that traditional database design is not used in practice - and if
it were used it would result in designs that are not well adapted to current
environments. In short, database design has failed to keep up with the times.
In this paper, we put forth arguments to support our viewpoint, analyze the

Word Sense Disambiguation for Ontology Learning
Ontology learning aims to automatically extract ontological concepts and relationships from related text repositories and is expected to be more efficient and scalable than manual ontology development. One of the challenging issues associated with ontology learning is word sense disambiguation (WSD). Most WSD research employs resources such as WordNet, text corpora, or a hybrid approach. Motivated by the large volume and richness of user-generated content in social media, this research explores the role of social media in ontology learning. Specifically, our approach exploits social media as a dynamic context rich data source for WSD. This paper presents a method and preliminary evidence for the efficacy of our proposed method for WSD. The research is in progress toward conducting a formal evaluation of the social media based method for WSD, and plans to incorporate the WSD routine into an ontology learning system in the future

Improving tag recommendation using social networks
In this paper we address the task of recommending additional tags to partially annotated media objects, in our case images. We propose an extendable framework that can recommend tags using a combination of different personalised and collective contexts. We combine information from four contexts: (1) all the photos in the system, (2) a user's own photos, (3) the photos of a user's social contacts, and (4) the photos posted in the groups of which a user is a member. Variants of methods (1) and (2) have been proposed in previous work, but the use of (3) and (4) is novel.
For each of the contexts we use the same probabilistic model and Borda Count based aggregation approach to generate recommendations from different contexts into a unified ranking of recommended tags. We evaluate our system using a large set of real-world data from Flickr. We show that by using personalised contexts we can significantly improve tag recommendation compared to using collective knowledge alone. We also analyse our experimental results to explore the capabilities of our system with respect to a user's social behaviour
