Prognosis may be understood as the generation of long-term predictions describing the evolution in time of a particular signal of interest or fault indicator, with the purpose of estimating the remaining useful life (RUL) of a failing component/subsystem.     Application of deterministic resampling particle filter to fatigue prognosis

    The method based on a particle filter for a fatigue crack growth prognosis has proved to be a powerful and effective tool for developing prognostics and health management (PHM) technology. However, the widely used basic particle filter have the unavoidable particle impoverishment problem, which will make particles unable to approximate the true posterior probability density function of the system state and lead to a prognosis result with a large error. This paper proposes a fatigue crack growth prognosis method based on a deterministic resampling particle filter. The active structural health monitoring based on the Lamb wave is used for on-line crack length monitoring with piezoelectric transducers. With the on-line crack measurement, the crack state and crack growth model parameters are estimated for a fatigue crack growth prognosis. In addition, the deterministic resampling procedure is employed to overcome the particle impoverishment problem. The result shows the proposed crack growth prognosis method based on deterministic resampling particle filter can provide more satisfactory results than the basic particle filter

    An Integrated Approach for Gear Health Prognostics

    In this paper, an integrated approach for gear health prognostics using particle filters is presented. The presented method effectively addresses the issues in applying particle filters to gear health prognostics by integrating several new components into a particle filter: (1) data mining based techniques to effectively define the degradation state transition and measurement functions using a one-dimensional health index obtained by whitening transform; (2) an unbiased l-step ahead RUL estimator updated with measurement errors. The feasibility of the presented prognostics method is validated using data from a spiral bevel gear case study

    Remaining useful life prediction of rolling bearings by the particle filter method based on degradation rate tracking

    There is no doubt that remaining useful life prediction is important to the health management of modern mechanical equipment. But in most cases, the useful operational information of equipment we can get are limited, one of them is vibration signal. Particle filter is a hybrid prediction method combined with data-driven and model-based two kinds of methods. It can solve prognosis problem with the fitted prediction model only by historical data, and allow the uncertainty management. However, the prediction performance of the method is largely dependent on the prediction model and very sensitive to the initial distribution of the model parameters. These flaws limit the further development of particle filter methods in the prediction. Aiming at the shortcomings of the basic particle filter prediction method, a general prediction framework of particle filter based on degradation rate tracking is proposed in this paper. It turned away from the fitted model, and utilized the statistical rule of degradation rate of historical data to estimate and predict the degradation process of system. The effectiveness of the method proposed is validated with useful life prediction case of rolling bearings

    Towards a hybrid approach for diagnostics and prognostics of planetary gearboxes

    The reliable operation of planetary gearboxes is critical for the sustained operation of many machines such as wind turbines and helicopter transmissions. Hybrid methods that make use of the respective advantages of physics-based and data-driven models can be valuable in addressing the unique challenges associated with the condition monitoring of planetary gearboxes. In this dissertation, a hybrid framework for diagnostics and prognostics of planetary gearboxes is proposed. The proposed framework aims to diagnose and predict the root crack length in a planet gear tooth from accelerometer measurements. Physics-based and data-driven models are combined to exploit their respective advantages, and it is assumed that no failure data is available for training these models. Components required for the implementation of the proposed framework are studied separately and challenges associated with each component are discussed. The proposed hybrid framework comprises a health state estimation and health state prediction part. In the health state estimation part of the proposed framework, the crack length is diagnosed from the measured vibration response. To do this, the following model components are implemented: A first finite element model is used to simulate the crack growth path in the planet gear tooth. Thereafter, a second finite element model is used to establish a relationship between the gearbox time varying mesh stiffness, and the crack length in the planet gear tooth. A lumped mass model is then used to model the vibration response of the gearbox housing subject to the gearbox time varying mesh stiffness excitation. The measurements from an accelerometer mounted on the gearbox housing are processed by computing the synchronous average. Finally, these model components are combined with an additional data-driven model for diagnosing the crack length from the measured vibration response through the solution of an inverse problem. After the crack length is diagnosed through the health state estimation model, the Paris crack propagation law and Bayesian state estimation techniques are used to predict the remaining useful life of the gearbox. To validate the proposed hybrid framework, an experimental setup is developed. The experimental setup allows for the measurement of the vibration response of a planetary gearbox with different tooth root crack lengths in the planet gear. However, challenges in reliably detecting the damage in the experimental setup lead to the use of simulated data for studying the respective components of the hybrid method.     Advanced Algorithms for Automatic Wind Turbine Condition Monitoring

    Reliable and efficient condition monitoring (CM) techniques play a crucial role in minimising wind turbine (WT) operations and maintenance (O&M) costs for a competitive development of wind energy, especially offshore. Although all new turbines are now fitted with some form of condition monitoring system (CMS), very few operators make use of the available monitoring information for maintenance purposes because of the volume and the complexity of the data. This Thesis is concerned with the development of advanced automatic fault detection techniques so that high on-line diagnostic accuracy for important WT drive train mechanical and electrical CM signals is achieved. Experimental work on small scale WT test rigs is described. Seeded fault tests were performed to investigate gear tooth damage, rotor electrical asymmetry and generator bearing failures. Test rig data were processed by using commercial WT CMSs. Based on the experimental evidence, three algorithms were proposed to aid in the automatic damage detection and diagnosis during WT non-stationary load and speed operating conditions. Uncertainty involved in analysing CM signals with field fitted equipment was reduced, and enhanced detection sensitivity was achieved, by identifying and collating characteristic fault frequencies in CM signals which could be tracked as the WT speed varies. The performance of the gearbox algorithm was validated against datasets of a full-size WT gearbox, that had sustained gear damage, from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) WT Gearbox Condition Monitoring Round Robin project. The fault detection sensitivity of the proposed algorithms was assessed and quantified leading to conclusions about their applicability to operating WTs

    A new improved Kurtogram and its application to planetary gearbox degradation feature analysis

    Because of various advantages of planetary transmission system, it has been widely used in modern industry. And study on planetary gearbox degradation feature analysis method has important significance for mechanical system prognostics and health management (PHM). In order to analysis the degradation characteristic of planetary gearbox, Energram is proposed in this paper based on Kurtogram. Kurtogram is used for finding the optimal frequency band to rotating machinery fault diagnosis by calculating kurtosis. Similarly, Energram is used to show the energy trend of each frequency band by calculating energy, and arithmetic Energram is used to show the change of frequency band energy. The principle and application of Energram and arithmetic Energram are described by experimental data examples in this paper. A detailed study of planetary gearbox degradation characteristics is expressed in case study, which including Energram, arithmetic Energram and four particular comparative analyses. And the conclusions of each comparative analysis are given

    Remaining useful life prediction of the ball screw system based on weighted Mahalanobis distance and an exponential model

    The ball screw system is one of the crucial components of machine tools and predicting its remaining useful life (RUL) can enhance the reliability and safety of the entire machine tool and reduce maintenance costs. Although quite a few techniques have been developed for the fault diagnosis of the ball screw system, forecasting the RUL of the ball screw system is a remaining challenge. To make up for this deficiency, we present a model-based method to predict the RUL of the ball screw system, which consists of two parts: health indicator (HI) construction and RUL prediction. First, we develop a novel HI, weighted Mahalanobis distance (WDMD). Unlike the Mahalanobis distance (MD), which is constructed by fusing original features directly, the WDMD is formed with some selected features only, and the features are weighted before integration. Second, an exponential model is developed to describe the degradation path of the ball screw system. Then, the particle filtering algorithm is employed to combine the WDMD and the degradation model for state estimation and RUL prediction. The proposed approach is verified by a dataset obtained from an experimental system designed for accelerated life tests of the ball screw system. The results show that the WDMD has a more apparent deterioration trend than the MD and the proposed exponential model performs better than both the linear model and the nonlinear model in RUL prediction
