Meta-heuristic algorithms in car engine design: a literature survey
Meta-heuristic algorithms are often inspired by natural phenomena, including the evolution of species in Darwinian natural selection theory, ant behaviors in biology, flock behaviors of some birds, and annealing in metallurgy. Due to their great potential in solving difficult optimization problems, meta-heuristic algorithms have found their way into automobile engine design. There are different optimization problems arising in different areas of car engine management including calibration, control system, fault diagnosis, and modeling. In this paper we review the state-of-the-art applications of different meta-heuristic algorithms in engine management systems. The review covers a wide range of research, including the application of meta-heuristic algorithms in engine calibration, optimizing engine control systems, engine fault diagnosis, and optimizing different parts of engines and modeling. The meta-heuristic algorithms reviewed in this paper include evolutionary algorithms, evolution strategy, evolutionary programming, genetic programming, differential evolution, estimation of distribution algorithm, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, memetic algorithms, and artificial immune system
Application of a new multi-agent Hybrid Co-evolution based Particle Swarm Optimisation methodology in ship design
In this paper, a multiple objective 'Hybrid Co-evolution based Particle Swarm Optimisation' methodology (HCPSO) is proposed. This methodology is able to handle multiple objective optimisation problems in the area of ship design, where the simultaneous optimisation of several conflicting objectives is considered. The proposed method is a hybrid technique that merges the features of co-evolution and Nash equilibrium with a Ξ΅-disturbance technique to eliminate the stagnation. The method also offers a way to identify an efficient set of Pareto (conflicting) designs and to select a preferred solution amongst these designs. The combination of co-evolution approach and Nash-optima contributes to HCPSO by utilising faster search and evolution characteristics. The design search is performed within a multi-agent design framework to facilitate distributed synchronous cooperation. The most widely used test functions from the formal literature of multiple objectives optimisation are utilised to test the HCPSO. In addition, a real case study, the internal subdivision problem of a ROPAX vessel, is provided to exemplify the applicability of the developed method
Secure Authentication Mechanism for Cluster based Vehicular Adhoc Network (VANET): A Survey
Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) play a crucial role in Intelligent
Transportation Systems (ITS) by facilitating communication between vehicles and
infrastructure. This communication aims to enhance road safety, improve traffic
efficiency, and enhance passenger comfort. The secure and reliable exchange of
information is paramount to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of data,
while the authentication of vehicles and messages is essential to prevent
unauthorized access and malicious activities. This survey paper presents a
comprehensive analysis of existing authentication mechanisms proposed for
cluster-based VANETs. The strengths, weaknesses, and suitability of these
mechanisms for various scenarios are carefully examined. Additionally, the
integration of secure key management techniques is discussed to enhance the
overall authentication process. Cluster-based VANETs are formed by dividing the
network into smaller groups or clusters, with designated cluster heads
comprising one or more vehicles. Furthermore, this paper identifies gaps in the
existing literature through an exploration of previous surveys. Several schemes
based on different methods are critically evaluated, considering factors such
as throughput, detection rate, security, packet delivery ratio, and end-to-end
delay. To provide optimal solutions for authentication in cluster-based VANETs,
this paper highlights AI- and ML-based routing-based schemes. These approaches
leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to enhance
authentication within the cluster-based VANET network. Finally, this paper
explores the open research challenges that exist in the realm of authentication
for cluster-based Vehicular Adhoc Networks, shedding light on areas that
require further investigation and development
A bi-level model of dynamic traffic signal control with continuum approximation
This paper proposes a bi-level model for traffic network signal control, which is formulated as a dynamic Stackelberg game and solved as a mathematical program with equilibrium constraints (MPEC). The lower-level problem is a dynamic user equilibrium (DUE) with embedded dynamic network loading (DNL) sub-problem based on the LWR model (Lighthill and Whitham, 1955; Richards, 1956). The upper-level decision variables are (time-varying) signal green splits with the objective of minimizing network-wide travel cost. Unlike most existing literature which mainly use an on-and-off (binary) representation of the signal controls, we employ a continuum signal model recently proposed and analyzed in Han et al. (2014), which aims at describing and predicting the aggregate behavior that exists at signalized intersections without relying on distinct signal phases. Advantages of this continuum signal model include fewer integer variables, less restrictive constraints on the time steps, and higher decision resolution. It simplifies the modeling representation of large-scale urban traffic networks with the benefit of improved computational efficiency in simulation or optimization. We present, for the LWR-based DNL model that explicitly captures vehicle spillback, an in-depth study on the implementation of the continuum signal model, as its approximation accuracy depends on a number of factors and may deteriorate greatly under certain conditions. The proposed MPEC is solved on two test networks with three metaheuristic methods. Parallel computing is employed to significantly accelerate the solution procedure
Uncertain Multi-Criteria Optimization Problems
Most real-world search and optimization problems naturally involve multiple criteria as objectives. Generally, symmetry, asymmetry, and anti-symmetry are basic characteristics of binary relationships used when modeling optimization problems. Moreover, the notion of symmetry has appeared in many articles about uncertainty theories that are employed in multi-criteria problems. Different solutions may produce trade-offs (conflicting scenarios) among different objectives. A better solution with respect to one objective may compromise other objectives. There are various factors that need to be considered to address the problems in multidisciplinary research, which is critical for the overall sustainability of human development and activity. In this regard, in recent decades, decision-making theory has been the subject of intense research activities due to its wide applications in different areas. The decision-making theory approach has become an important means to provide real-time solutions to uncertainty problems. Theories such as probability theory, fuzzy set theory, type-2 fuzzy set theory, rough set, and uncertainty theory, available in the existing literature, deal with such uncertainties. Nevertheless, the uncertain multi-criteria characteristics in such problems have not yet been explored in depth, and there is much left to be achieved in this direction. Hence, different mathematical models of real-life multi-criteria optimization problems can be developed in various uncertain frameworks with special emphasis on optimization problems
A Comprehensive Survey on Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm and Its Applications
Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a heuristic global optimization method, proposed originally by Kennedy and Eberhart in 1995. It is now one of the most commonly used optimization techniques. This survey presented a comprehensive investigation of PSO. On one hand, we provided advances with PSO, including its modifications (including quantum-behaved PSO, bare-bones PSO, chaotic PSO, and fuzzy PSO), population topology (as fully connected, von Neumann, ring, star, random, etc.), hybridization (with genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, Tabu search, artificial immune system, ant colony algorithm, artificial bee colony, differential evolution, harmonic search, and biogeography-based optimization), extensions (to multiobjective, constrained, discrete, and binary optimization), theoretical analysis (parameter selection and tuning, and convergence analysis), and parallel implementation (in multicore, multiprocessor, GPU, and cloud computing forms). On the other hand, we offered a survey on applications of PSO to the following eight fields: electrical and electronic engineering, automation control systems, communication theory, operations research, mechanical engineering, fuel and energy, medicine, chemistry, and biology. It is hoped that this survey would be beneficial for the researchers studying PSO algorithms

A review of asset management literature on multi-asset systems
This article gives an overview of the literature on asset management for multi-unit systems with an emphasis on two multi-asset categories: fleet (a system of homogeneous assets) and portfolio (a system of heterogeneous assets). As asset systems become more complicated, researchers have employed different terms to refer to their specific problems. With an
objective to facilitate readers in searching conducive studies to their interests, this paper establishes a novel classification scheme for multi-unit systems in accordance with essential features such as diversity of assets and intervention options. Moreover, discerning differences in characteristics between cross-component and cross-asset interactions, we select three types of potential multi-component dependencies (performance, stochastic, and resource) and extend their notions to be applicable to multi-asset systems. The investigation into these dependencies enables the identification of problems that could exist in real industrial settings
but are yet to be determined in academia. Ultimately, we delve into modelling approaches adopted by previous researchers. This comprehensive information allows us to offer the insights into the current trends in multi-asset maintenance. We expect that the output of this review paper will not only stress research gaps on multi-asset systems, but more importantly
help systematise future studies on this aspect
Automatic object classification for surveillance videos.
PhDThe recent popularity of surveillance video systems, specially located in urban
scenarios, demands the development of visual techniques for monitoring purposes.
A primary step towards intelligent surveillance video systems consists on automatic
object classification, which still remains an open research problem and the keystone
for the development of more specific applications.
Typically, object representation is based on the inherent visual features. However,
psychological studies have demonstrated that human beings can routinely categorise
objects according to their behaviour. The existing gap in the understanding
between the features automatically extracted by a computer, such as appearance-based
features, and the concepts unconsciously perceived by human beings but
unattainable for machines, or the behaviour features, is most commonly known
as semantic gap. Consequently, this thesis proposes to narrow the semantic gap
and bring together machine and human understanding towards object classification.
Thus, a Surveillance Media Management is proposed to automatically detect and
classify objects by analysing the physical properties inherent in their appearance
(machine understanding) and the behaviour patterns which require a higher level of
understanding (human understanding). Finally, a probabilistic multimodal fusion
algorithm bridges the gap performing an automatic classification considering both
machine and human understanding.
The performance of the proposed Surveillance Media Management framework
has been thoroughly evaluated on outdoor surveillance datasets. The experiments
conducted demonstrated that the combination of machine and human understanding
substantially enhanced the object classification performance. Finally, the inclusion
of human reasoning and understanding provides the essential information to bridge
the semantic gap towards smart surveillance video systems
