    RGIM: An Integrated Approach to Improve QoS in AODV, DSR and DSDV Routing Protocols for FANETS Using the Chain Mobility Model

    Flying ad hoc networks (FANETs) are a collection of unmanned aerial vehicles that communicate without any predefined infrastructure. FANET, being one of the most researched topics nowadays, finds its scope in many complex applications like drones used for military applications, border surveillance systems and other systems like civil applications in traffic monitoring and disaster management. Quality of service (QoS) performance parameters for routing e.g. delay, packet delivery ratio, jitter and throughput in FANETs are quite difficult to improve. Mobility models play an important role in evaluating the performance of the routing protocols. In this paper, the integration of two selected mobility models, i.e. random waypoint and Gauss–Markov model, is implemented. As a result, the random Gauss integrated model is proposed for evaluating the performance of AODV (ad hoc on-demand distance vector), DSR (dynamic source routing) and DSDV (destination-Sequenced distance vector) routing protocols. The simulation is done with an NS2 simulator for various scenarios by varying the number of nodes and taking low- and high-node speeds of 50 and 500, respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed model improves the QoS performance parameters of AODV, DSR and DSDV protocol

    Flying ad-hoc network application scenarios and mobility models

    [EN] Flying ad-hoc networks are becoming a promising solution for different application scenarios involving unmanned aerial vehicles, like urban surveillance or search and rescue missions. However, such networks present various and very specific communication issues. As a consequence, there are several research studies focused on analyzing their performance via simulation. Correctly modeling mobility is crucial in this context and although many mobility models are already available to reproduce the behavior of mobile nodes in an ad-hoc network, most of these models cannot be used to reliably simulate the motion of unmanned aerial vehicles.     Implementation and Comparison of Mobility Models in NS-2

    In the performance evaluation of a protocol for an ad hoc network, the protocol should be tested under realistic conditions including, but not limited to, a sensible transmission range, limited buffer space for the storage of messages, representative data traffic models, and realistic movements of the mobile users (i.e., a mobility model). Simulation is universally considered the most effective method of designing and evaluating new network protocols. When developing protocols for mobile networking, the chosen mobility model is one of the key determinants in the success of an accurate simulation. The main role of a mobility model is to mimic the movement behaviors of actual users. Given the critical role of the mobility model in supporting realistic and accurate protocol simulations, its correct design and selection is essential .We have described 3 mobility models that represent mobile nodes whose movements are independent of each other (i.e., entity mobility models). Lastly, we present simulation results that illustrate the importance of choosing a mobility model in the simulation of an ad hoc network protocol.     Impacts of Mobility Models on RPL-Based Mobile IoT Infrastructures: An Evaluative Comparison and Survey

    With the widespread use of IoT applications and the increasing trend in the number of connected smart devices, the concept of routing has become very challenging. In this regard, the IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-power and Lossy Networks (PRL) was standardized to be adopted in IoT networks. Nevertheless, while mobile IoT domains have gained significant popularity in recent years, since RPL was fundamentally designed for stationary IoT applications, it could not well adjust with the dynamic fluctuations in mobile applications. While there have been a number of studies on tuning RPL for mobile IoT applications, but still there is a high demand for more efforts to reach a standard version of this protocol for such applications. Accordingly, in this survey, we try to conduct a precise and comprehensive experimental study on the impact of various mobility models on the performance of a mobility-aware RPL to help this process. In this regard, a complete and scrutinized survey of the mobility models has been presented to be able to fairly justify and compare the outcome results. A significant set of evaluations has been conducted via precise IoT simulation tools to monitor and compare the performance of the network and its IoT devices in mobile RPL-based IoT applications under the presence of different mobility models from different perspectives including power consumption, reliability, latency, and control packet overhead. This will pave the way for researchers in both academia and industry to be able to compare the impact of various mobility models on the functionality of RPL, and consequently to design and implement application-specific and even a standard version of this protocol, which is capable of being employed in mobile IoT applications

    Correlated Node Behavior Model based on Semi Markov Process for MANETS

    This paper introduces a new model for node behavior namely Correlated Node Behavior Model which is an extension of Node Behavior Model. The model adopts semi Markov process in continuous time which clusters the node that has correlation. The key parameter of the process is determined by five probabilistic parameters based on the Markovian model. Computed from the transition probabilities of the semi-Markov process, the node correlation impact on network survivability and resilience can be measure quantitatively. From the result, the quantitative analysis of correlated node behavior on the survivability is obtained through mathematical description, and the effectiveness and rationality of the proposed model are verified through numerical analysis. The analytical results show that the effect from correlated failure nodes on network survivability is much severer than other misbehaviors.Comment: IJCSI Volume 9, Issue 1, January 201

    IoT System Integrating Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and LoRa Technology: A Performance Evaluation Study

    Nowadays, the popularity of the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is high, and it is expected that, in the next years, the implementation of UAVs in day-to-day service will be even greater. These new implementations make use of novel technologies encompassed under the term Internet of Things (IoT). One example of these technologies is Long-Range (LoRa), classified as a Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) with low-cost, low-power consumption, large coverage area, and the possibility of a high number of connected devices. One fundamental part of a proper UAV-based IoT service deployment is performance evaluation. However, there is no standardized methodology for assessing the performance in these scenarios. This article presents a case study of an integrated UAV-LoRa system employed for air-quality monitoring. Each UAV is equipped with a set of sensors to measure several indicators of air pollution. In addition, each UAV also incorporates an embedded LoRa node for communication purposes. Given that mobility is key when evaluating the performance of these types of systems, we study eight different mobility models, focusing on the effect that the number of UAVs and their flying speed have on system performance. Through extensive simulations, performance is evaluated via multiple quality dimensions, encompassing the whole process from data acquisition to user experience. Results show that our performance evaluation methodology allows a complete understanding of the operation, and for this specific case study, the mobility model with the best performance is Pathway because the LoRa nodes are distributed and move orderly throughout the coverage area.This work was supported by the AEI/FEDER-UE Project grant (TEC2016-76465.C2-1-R) (AIM)
