From 4D medical images (CT, MRI, and Ultrasound) to 4D structured mesh models of the left ventricular endocardium for patient-specific simulations
With cardiovascular disease (CVD) remaining the primary cause of death worldwide, early detection of CVDs becomes essential. The intracardiac flow is an important component of ventricular function, motion kinetics, wash-out of ventricular chambers, and ventricular energetics. Coupling between Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and medical images can play a fundamental role in terms of patient-specific diagnostic tools. From a technical perspective, CFD simulations with moving boundaries could easily lead to negative volumes errors and the sudden failure of the simulation. The generation of high-quality 4D meshes (3D in space + time) with 1-to-l vertex becomes essential to perform a CFD simulation with moving boundaries. In this context, we developed a semiautomatic morphing tool able to create 4D high-quality structured meshes starting from a segmented 4D dataset. To prove the versatility and efficiency, the method was tested on three different 4D datasets (Ultrasound, MRI, and CT) by evaluating the quality and accuracy of the resulting 4D meshes. Furthermore, an estimation of some physiological quantities is accomplished for the 4D CT reconstruction. Future research will aim at extending the region of interest, further automation of the meshing algorithm, and generating structured hexahedral mesh models both for the blood and myocardial volume
Constructing IGA-suitable planar parameterization from complex CAD boundary by domain partition and global/local optimization
In this paper, we propose a general framework for constructing IGA-suitable
planar B-spline parameterizations from given complex CAD boundaries consisting
of a set of B-spline curves. Instead of forming the computational domain by a
simple boundary, planar domains with high genus and more complex boundary
curves are considered. Firstly, some pre-processing operations including
B\'ezier extraction and subdivision are performed on each boundary curve in
order to generate a high-quality planar parameterization; then a robust planar
domain partition framework is proposed to construct high-quality patch-meshing
results with few singularities from the discrete boundary formed by connecting
the end points of the resulting boundary segments. After the topology
information generation of quadrilateral decomposition, the optimal placement of
interior B\'ezier curves corresponding to the interior edges of the
quadrangulation is constructed by a global optimization method to achieve a
patch-partition with high quality. Finally, after the imposition of
C1=G1-continuity constraints on the interface of neighboring B\'ezier patches
with respect to each quad in the quadrangulation, the high-quality B\'ezier
patch parameterization is obtained by a C1-constrained local optimization
method to achieve uniform and orthogonal iso-parametric structures while
keeping the continuity conditions between patches. The efficiency and
robustness of the proposed method are demonstrated by several examples which
are compared to results obtained by the skeleton-based parameterization
approach
Image segmentation with adaptive region growing based on a polynomial surface model
A new method for segmenting intensity images into smooth surface segments is presented. The main idea is to divide the image into flat, planar, convex, concave, and saddle patches that coincide as well as possible with meaningful object features in the image. Therefore, we propose an adaptive region growing algorithm based on low-degree polynomial fitting. The algorithm uses a new adaptive thresholding technique with the L∞ fitting cost as a segmentation criterion. The polynomial degree and the fitting error are automatically adapted during the region growing process. The main contribution is that the algorithm detects outliers and edges, distinguishes between strong and smooth intensity transitions and finds surface segments that are bent in a certain way. As a result, the surface segments corresponding to meaningful object features and the contours separating the surface segments coincide with real-image object edges. Moreover, the curvature-based surface shape information facilitates many tasks in image analysis, such as object recognition performed on the polynomial representation. The polynomial representation provides good image approximation while preserving all the necessary details of the objects in the reconstructed images. The method outperforms existing techniques when segmenting images of objects with diffuse reflecting surfaces
Map-Guided Curriculum Domain Adaptation and Uncertainty-Aware Evaluation for Semantic Nighttime Image Segmentation
We address the problem of semantic nighttime image segmentation and improve
the state-of-the-art, by adapting daytime models to nighttime without using
nighttime annotations. Moreover, we design a new evaluation framework to
address the substantial uncertainty of semantics in nighttime images. Our
central contributions are: 1) a curriculum framework to gradually adapt
semantic segmentation models from day to night through progressively darker
times of day, exploiting cross-time-of-day correspondences between daytime
images from a reference map and dark images to guide the label inference in the
dark domains; 2) a novel uncertainty-aware annotation and evaluation framework
and metric for semantic segmentation, including image regions beyond human
recognition capability in the evaluation in a principled fashion; 3) the Dark
Zurich dataset, comprising 2416 unlabeled nighttime and 2920 unlabeled twilight
images with correspondences to their daytime counterparts plus a set of 201
nighttime images with fine pixel-level annotations created with our protocol,
which serves as a first benchmark for our novel evaluation. Experiments show
that our map-guided curriculum adaptation significantly outperforms
state-of-the-art methods on nighttime sets both for standard metrics and our
uncertainty-aware metric. Furthermore, our uncertainty-aware evaluation reveals
that selective invalidation of predictions can improve results on data with
ambiguous content such as our benchmark and profit safety-oriented applications
involving invalid inputs.Comment: IEEE T-PAMI 202
Composing quadrilateral meshes for animation
The modeling-by-composition paradigm can be a powerful tool in modern animation pipelines. We propose two novel interactive techniques to compose 3D assets that enable the artists to freely remove, detach and combine components of organic models. The idea behind our methods is to preserve most of the original information in the input characters and blend accordingly where necessary.
The first method, QuadMixer, provides a robust tool to compose the quad layouts of watertight pure quadrilateral meshes, exploiting the boolean operations defined on triangles. Quad Layout is a crucial property for many applications since it conveys important information that would otherwise be destroyed by techniques that aim only at preserving the shape. Our technique keeps untouched all the quads in the patches which are not involved in the blending. The resulting meshes preserve the originally designed edge flows that, by construction, are captured and incorporated into the new quads.
SkinMixer extends this approach to compose skinned models, taking into account not only the surface but also the data structures for animating the character. We propose a new operation-based technique that preserves and smoothly merges meshes, skeletons, and skinning weights. The retopology approach of QuadMixer is extended to work on quad-dominant and arbitrary complex surfaces. Instead of relying on boolean operations on triangle meshes, we manipulate signed distance fields to generate an implicit surface. The results preserve most of the information in the input assets, blending accordingly in the intersection regions. The resulting characters are ready to be used in animation pipelines.
Given the high quality of the results generated, we believe that our methods could have a huge impact on the entertainment industry. Integrated into current software for 3D modeling, they would certainly provide a powerful tool for the artists. Allowing them to automatically reuse parts of their well-designed characters could lead to a new approach for creating models, which would significantly reduce the cost of the process
Automatic and topology-preserving gradient mesh generation for image vectorization
Demonic faith is not strictly associated with infidelity itself, but rather exists beyond it. This work aims to present the main postulates of the most crucial elements of the theological faith in order to show, using F. Hadjadj's philosophical thesis, the main characteristics associated with evil demons, which are of the spiritual nature and present great danger for man and his faith. Despite various interpretations, Hadjadj wishes to point out that evil demons do not dwel lonly within atheists, agnostics and other movements which, in a way, negate the existence of God, but that these evil demons actually do believe, and therefore he uses as a starting point the line from the Epistle of Jacob that states that demons „believe and tremble”. In the end, this work presented the importance of the body-soul synthesis, which is the incarnation in Christianity, since the mistery of the Catholic faith is the mistery of the incarnation, and it is impossible to discard corporeality, which is the case in various spiritual dimensions
