Alfvén waves underlying ionospheric destabilization: ground-based observations
During geomagnetic storms, terawatts of power in the million mile-per-hour solar wind pierce the Earth’s magnetosphere. Geomagnetic storms and substorms create transverse magnetic waves known as Alfvén waves. In the auroral acceleration region, Alfvén waves accelerate electrons up to one-tenth the speed of light via wave-particle interactions. These inertial Alfvén wave (IAW) accelerated electrons are imbued with sub-100 meter structure perpendicular to geomagnetic field B. The IAW electric field parallel to B accelerates electrons up to about 10 keV along B. The IAW dispersion relation quantifies the precipitating electron striation observed with high-speed cameras as spatiotemporally dynamic fine structured aurora.
A network of tightly synchronized tomographic auroral observatories using model based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) techniques were developed in this dissertation. The TRANSCAR electron penetration model creates a basis set of monoenergetic electron beam eigenprofiles of auroral volume emission rate for the given location and ionospheric conditions. Each eigenprofile consists of nearly 200 broadband line spectra modulated by atmospheric attenuation, bandstop filter and imager quantum efficiency. The L-BFGS-B minimization routine combined with sub-pixel registered electron multiplying CCD video stream at order 10 ms cadence yields estimates of electron differential number flux at the top of the ionosphere.
Our automatic data curation algorithm reduces one terabyte/camera/day into accurate MBIR-processed estimates of IAW-driven electron precipitation microstructure. This computer vision structured auroral discrimination algorithm was developed using a multiscale dual-camera system observing a 175 km and 14 km swath of sky simultaneously. This collective behavior algorithm exploits the “swarm” behavior of aurora, detectable even as video SNR approaches zero. A modified version of the algorithm is applied to topside ionospheric radar at Mars and broadcast FM passive radar. The fusion of data from coherent radar backscatter and optical data at order 10 ms cadence confirms and further quantifies the relation of strong Langmuir turbulence and streaming plasma upflows in the ionosphere with the finest spatiotemporal auroral dynamics associated with IAW acceleration. The software programs developed in this dissertation solve the century-old problem of automatically discriminating finely structured aurora from other forms and pushes the observational wave-particle science frontiers forward

Techniques are discussed in the following areas: astrometry, photometry, infrared observations, radio observations, spectroscopy, imaging of coma and tail, image processing of observation. The determination of the chemical composition and physical structure of comets is highlighted
Remote Sensing
This dual conception of remote sensing brought us to the idea of preparing two different books; in addition to the first book which displays recent advances in remote sensing applications, this book is devoted to new techniques for data processing, sensors and platforms. We do not intend this book to cover all aspects of remote sensing techniques and platforms, since it would be an impossible task for a single volume. Instead, we have collected a number of high-quality, original and representative contributions in those areas
Deciphering Lyman blob 1 with deep MUSE observations
Context: Lyman blobs (LABs) are large-scale radio-quiet Lyman
(Ly) nebula at high- that occur predominantly in overdense
proto-cluster regions. Especially the prototypical SSA22a-LAB1 at has
become an observational reference for LABs across the electromagnetic spectrum.
Aims: We want to understand the powering mechanisms that drive the LAB to
gain empirical insights into galaxy formation processes within a rare dense
environment at high-.
Methods: LAB 1 was observed for 17.5h with the VLT/MUSE integral-field
spectrograph. We produced optimally extracted narrow band images in Ly
and HeII . By using a moment based analysis we
mapped the kinematics of the blob.
Results: We detect Ly emission to surface-brightness limits of
erg scmarcsec. At this depth we reveal a bridge
between LAB 1 and its northern neighbour LAB 8, as well as a shell-like
filament towards the south of LAB 1. We find a coherent large scale east-west
1000 km s velocity gradient that is aligned perpendicular to the
major axis of the blob. We detect HeII emission in three distinct regions, but
we can only provide upper limits for CIV.
Conclusions: Various gas excitation mechanisms are at play in LAB 1: Ionising
radiation and feedback effects dominate near the embedded galaxies, while
Ly scattering is contributing at larger distances. However,
HeII/Ly ratios combined with upper limits on CIV/Ly can not
discriminate between AGN ionisation and feedback driven shocks. The alignment
of the angular momentum vector parallel to the morphological principal axis
appears odds with the predicted norm for high-mass halos, but likely reflects
that LAB\,1 resides at a node of multiple intersecting filaments of the cosmic
web.

Printed Organic Photodiodes with Enhanced Performance and Simplified Processing

Searches for Neutrinos from Supernovae Using Cherenkov In-Ice Detectors
Supernovae mark the violent death of massive stars. They are among the most energetic processes known to exist in the Universe. Neutrinos play crucial roles in supernova processes. Besides the low-energy neutrinos emitted during the core-collapse process of the supernova, there may be neutrinos of much higher energies that are generated after the core-collapse. In this work, a new detector embedded in Antarctic glacier ice is studied, with sensitivity to extra-galactic supernova low-energy neutrino bursts. It is demonstrated that the development of optical sensors with large effective area and low noise rate is a requirement. For the proposed detector, several extra-galactic supernova neutrino detections per year are feasible. In addition, a multi-messenger data analysis program is carried out, which registers high-energy neutrino bursts with the IceCube detector and triggers follow-up observations with optical telescopes. No significant excess of neutrino bursts is found. Therefore, upper limits on the jet supernova model are derived. For model values of the jet Lorentz factor Γjet = 10 and the jet kinetic energy Ejet = 3 × 1051 erg, only about 8% of all core-collapse supernovae hosting a jet are consistent with the data.
