Functional design for operational earth resources ground data processing
The author has identified the following significant results. Study emphasis was on developing a unified concept for the required ground system, capable of handling data from all viable acquisition platforms and sensor groupings envisaged as supporting operational earth survey programs. The platforms considered include both manned and unmanned spacecraft in near earth orbit, and continued use of low and high altitude aircraft. The sensor systems include both imaging and nonimaging devices, operated both passively and actively, from the ultraviolet to the microwave regions of the electromagnetic spectrum
Using film cutting in interface design
It has been suggested that computer interfaces could be made more usable if their designers utilized cinematography techniques, which have evolved to guide
the viewer through a narrative despite frequent discontinuities in the presented scene (i.e., cuts between shots). Because of differences between the domains of
film and interface design, it is not straightforward to understand how such techniques can be transferred. May and Barnard (1995) argued that a psychological
model of watching film could support such a transference. This article presents an extended account of this model, which allows identification of the practice of collocation
of objects of interest in the same screen position before and after a cut. To verify that filmmakers do, in fact, use such techniques successfully, eye movements
were measured while participants watched the entirety of a commerciall
The Multimodal Experience of Art
The aim of this paper is to argue that our experience of artworks is normally multimodal. It is the
result of perceptual processing in more than one sense modality. In other words, multimodal experience
of art is not the exception; it is the rule. I use the example of music in order to demonstrate the various
ways in which the visual sense modality influences the auditory processing of music and conclude that
this should make us look more closely at our practices of engaging with artworks
Space-modulated Stability and Averaged Dynamics
In this brief note we give a brief overview of the comprehensive theory,
recently obtained by the author jointly with Johnson, Noble and Zumbrun, that
describes the nonlinear dynamics about spectrally stable periodic waves of
parabolic systems and announce parallel results for the linearized dynamics
near cnoidal waves of the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The latter are expected

Max '91: Flare research at the next solar maximum
To address the central scientific questions surrounding solar flares, coordinated observations of electromagnetic radiation and energetic particles must be made from spacecraft, balloons, rockets, and ground-based observatories. A program to enhance capabilities in these areas in preparation for the next solar maximum in 1991 is recommended. The major scientific issues are described, and required observations and coordination of observations and analyses are detailed. A program plan and conceptual budgets are provided
Remote sensing application to regional activities
Two agencies within the State of Tennessee were identified whereby the transfer of aerospace technology, namely remote sensing, could be applied to their stated problem areas. Their stated problem areas are wetland and land classification and strip mining studies. In both studies, LANDSAT data was analyzed with the UTSI video-input analog/digital automatic analysis and classification facility. In the West Tennessee area three land-use classifications could be distinguished; cropland, wetland, and forest. In the East Tennessee study area, measurements were submitted to statistical tests which verified the significant differences due to natural terrain, stripped areas, various stages of reclamation, water, etc. Classifications for both studies were output in the form of maps of symbols and varying shades of gray
