From carbon nanotubes and silicate layers to graphene platelets for polymer nanocomposites
In spite of extensive studies conducted on carbon nanotubes and silicate layers for their polymer-based nanocomposites, the rise of graphene now provides a more promising candidate due to its exceptionally high mechanical performance and electrical and thermal conductivities. The present study developed a facile approach to fabricate epoxy–graphene nanocomposites by thermally expanding a commercial product followed by ultrasonication and solution-compounding with epoxy, and investigated their morphologies, mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and thermal mechanical behaviour. Simulation and Performance Analysis of MP-OLSR for Mobile Ad hoc Networks
Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) consist of a collection of wireless mobile
nodes which dynamically exchange data without reliance on a fixed base station
or a wired backbone network, which makes routing a crucial issue for the design
of a ad hoc networks. In this paper we discussed a hybrid multipath routing
protocol named MP-OLSR. It is based on the link state algorithm and employs
periodic exchange of messages to maintain topology information of the networks.
In the mean time, it updates the routing table in an on-demand scheme and
forwards the packets in multiple paths which have been determined at the
source. If a link failure is detected, the algorithm recovers the route
automatically. Concerning the instability of the wireless networks, the
redundancy coding is used to improve the delivery ratio. The simulation in NS2
shows that the new protocol can effectively improve the performance of the
networks
Analysis of Multiple Flows using Different High Speed TCP protocols on a General Network
We develop analytical tools for performance analysis of multiple TCP flows
(which could be using TCP CUBIC, TCP Compound, TCP New Reno) passing through a
multi-hop network. We first compute average window size for a single TCP
connection (using CUBIC or Compound TCP) under random losses. We then consider
two techniques to compute steady state throughput for different TCP flows in a
multi-hop network. In the first technique, we approximate the queues as M/G/1
queues. In the second technique, we use an optimization program whose solution
approximates the steady state throughput of the different flows. Our results

ATP: a Datacenter Approximate Transmission Protocol
Many datacenter applications such as machine learning and streaming systems
do not need the complete set of data to perform their computation. Current
approximate applications in datacenters run on a reliable network layer like
TCP. To improve performance, they either let sender select a subset of data and
transmit them to the receiver or transmit all the data and let receiver drop
some of them. These approaches are network oblivious and unnecessarily transmit
more data, affecting both application runtime and network bandwidth usage. On
the other hand, running approximate application on a lossy network with UDP
cannot guarantee the accuracy of application computation. We propose to run
approximate applications on a lossy network and to allow packet loss in a
controlled manner. Specifically, we designed a new network protocol called
Approximate Transmission Protocol, or ATP, for datacenter approximate
applications. ATP opportunistically exploits available network bandwidth as
much as possible, while performing a loss-based rate control algorithm to avoid
bandwidth waste and re-transmission. It also ensures bandwidth fair sharing
across flows and improves accurate applications' performance by leaving more
switch buffer space to accurate flows. We evaluated ATP with both simulation
and real implementation using two macro-benchmarks and two real applications,
Apache Kafka and Flink. Our evaluation results show that ATP reduces
application runtime by 13.9% to 74.6% compared to a TCP-based solution that
drops packets at sender, and it improves accuracy by up to 94.0% compared to
UDP
Streaming Complexity of Spanning Tree Computation
The semi-streaming model is a variant of the streaming model frequently used for the computation of graph problems. It allows the edges of an n-node input graph to be read sequentially in p passes using Õ(n) space. If the list of edges includes deletions, then the model is called the turnstile model; otherwise it is called the insertion-only model. In both models, some graph problems, such as spanning trees, k-connectivity, densest subgraph, degeneracy, cut-sparsifier, and (Δ+1)-coloring, can be exactly solved or (1+ε)-approximated in a single pass; while other graph problems, such as triangle detection and unweighted all-pairs shortest paths, are known to require Ω̃(n) passes to compute. For many fundamental graph problems, the tractability in these models is open. In this paper, we study the tractability of computing some standard spanning trees, including BFS, DFS, and maximum-leaf spanning trees. Our results, in both the insertion-only and the turnstile models, are as follows.
Maximum-Leaf Spanning Trees: This problem is known to be APX-complete with inapproximability constant ρ ∈ [245/244, 2). By constructing an ε-MLST sparsifier, we show that for every constant ε > 0, MLST can be approximated in a single pass to within a factor of 1+ε w.h.p. (albeit in super-polynomial time for ε ≤ ρ-1 assuming P ≠ NP) and can be approximated in polynomial time in a single pass to within a factor of ρ_n+ε w.h.p., where ρ_n is the supremum constant that MLST cannot be approximated to within using polynomial time and Õ(n) space. In the insertion-only model, these algorithms can be deterministic.
BFS Trees: It is known that BFS trees require ω(1) passes to compute, but the naïve approach needs O(n) passes. We devise a new randomized algorithm that reduces the pass complexity to O(√n), and it offers a smooth tradeoff between pass complexity and space usage. This gives a polynomial separation between single-source and all-pairs shortest paths for unweighted graphs.
DFS Trees: It is unknown whether DFS trees require more than one pass. The current best algorithm by Khan and Mehta [STACS 2019] takes Õ(h) passes, where h is the height of computed DFS trees. Note that h can be as large as Ω(m/n) for n-node m-edge graphs. Our contribution is twofold. First, we provide a simple alternative proof of this result, via a new connection to sparse certificates for k-node-connectivity. Second, we present a randomized algorithm that reduces the pass complexity to O(√n), and it also offers a smooth tradeoff between pass complexity and space usage.ISSN:1868-896
Memory management in traceback Viterbi decoders
The new Viterbi decoder for long constraint length codes, under development for the Deep Space Network, stores path information according to an algorithm called traceback. The details of a particular implementation of this algorithm, based on three memory buffers, are described. The penalties in increased storage requirement and longer decoding delay are offset by the reduced amount of data that needs to be exchanged between processors, in a parallel architecture decoder
Quantum computation with the Jaynes-Cummings model
In this paper, we propose a method for building a two-qubit gate with the
Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM). In our scheme, we construct a qubit from a pair of
optical paths where a photon is running. Generating Knill, Laflamme and
Milburn's nonlinear sign-shift gate by the JCM, we construct the conditional
sign-flip gate, which works with small error probability in principle. We also
discuss two experimental setups for realizing our scheme. In the first
experimental setup, we make use of coherent lights to examine whether or not
our scheme works. In the second experimental setup, an optical loop circuit
made out of the polarizing beam splitter and the Pockels cell takes an
